Abstract

This article investigates Indonesian history with transnational approach espe- cially in tracing social community of Indonesia in the context of globalization during nineteenth century. In this article, author focuses on holy tomb of ulama or saint (wali), Sayyid Husein bin Abu Bakar al-Aydarus, who died in the late eighteenth century and buried in Batavia. Although he died more than a century a go, his influence through tomb still can be sensed until now. In the nineteenth century, the tomb of Sayyid Husein bin Abu Bakar al-Aydarus became a symbolic mediator of Arab Hadrami communities in Batavia to build contact with the only Independence Muslim states, Ottoman state, after the decline of Mughal state in 1857. In the late nineteenth century, Hadrami communities requested donation from Ottoman sultan or Caliph to repair the tomb of Sayyid Husein bin Abu Bakar al-Aydarus. Upon this request, author concludes that in the middle of modernization and globalization, Ottoman government in Istanbul at that juncture was still concerned to preserve its spiritual network wiwth Indonesian Archipelago based on the Tradition of Islam (al-din).

Abstract

Abstract

The objectives of this article are: first, to discover the background of religious pluralism in Javanese society, notably among the communities in Ketanggi; second, to explore religious practices in Ketanggi; and third, to explore the religious attitudes of Ketanggi people towards religious pluralism. This article is based on field research carried out in Ketanggi sub-district of Ngawi, East Java, which is inhabited by the communities with different religious backgrounds. This paper argues that religious commitment among Ketanggi people is partly based on ‘tantularisme’, a sort of ethical principle which emerges as a result of the encounters between religion and local wisdom. The reception of Ketanggi people towards religious and cultural pluralism is partly expressed in the concept of lilo legowo (voluntary reception towards the other) which in turn become foundation of religious tolerance in that area. Keywords: religious pluralism, tantularism, and Javanese culture.

Abstract

This article analyzes three Régis Blachère’s major theses pertaining to codification and promulgation of Mushaf ‘Utsmani (Utsmanic Manuscript) based on the assumption that codification of the Quranic texts is a historical event that needs to be examined through internal and external historicism approach. This articel argues that Blachère’s arguments about the political motives behind the codification of Mushaf ‘Utsmani is not based on a solid historical argument: his fault in presenting historical chronology of the codification of the Qur’an, his weakness in combining or compromising (talfiq) conflicting historical naratives, as well as his unobjetive in examining sources that he refers to. Therefore, the idea to reconstruct the critical edition of the Qur’an—which is influenced by Blachère theses, is hard to accomplish due to the absence of other authentic sources subsequent to abolition of non- Utsmanic Manuscripts. Keywords: the Qur’an, codification, Utsmanic Manuscript, Exegesis.

Abstract

Astronomy is special scientific discipline in Islam as it relates to daily Muslim worship practices. In the Mamalik era (1250-1517), especially in Cairo and Damascus regions, Islamic astronomy has developed significantly as can be seen in the new discoveries of astronomical instruments. However, Islamic astronomy in the era of Mamalik conceals a very large amount of scientific knowledge that needs further discussion. As mentioned by King, there were a dozen of Islamic schbolars in astronomy whose treatises and ideas are unrevealed. Therefore contemporary astronomical studies run in higher educational institutions, should also seriously be focused on examining classical knowledge in astronomy. This article discusses the history and develop- ment of Islamic astronomy in the era of Mamalik and their contribution to the body of scientific knowledge in as- tronomy in that period

Fire occurred when Muslim performing Ied Fitri prayer in an open space. The case seemed to be a climax of previous events: 1) Gereja Injili di Indonesia (GIDI/ Indonesian Evangelical Church) held an international seminar involving people from all over the world, on the day of Ied Fitri. Moreover, GIDI released a notice banning Muslim from performing Ied Prayer, 2) the committee of KKR some-how felt irritated with Muslims’ activity during Ied celebration since early in the morning, 3) state apparatus were not prepared for the conflict. Early warning system needs to be developed to prevent such conflict re-occur in this country. The cause of conflict should be settled such as based on the finding of the Fact Finding Team of the Muslims Committee for Tolikara (Komat): the criminals should be brought to the court; the notice released by GIDI should be evaluated; Interreligious forum (FKUB) should be balanced between all religious beliefs; local regulation on the banning of building a place of worship other than GIDI’s church must be evaluated.
