Jurnal Pendidikan Matematika (JPM), an electronic peer-reviewed international journal, provides a forum for publishing the original research articles, review articles from contributors, and the novel technology news related to mathematics education. This journal is provided for writers, teachers, students, professors, and researchers, who will publish their research reports or their literature review articles (only for invited contributors) about mathematics education and its instructional for authors and readers worldwide. Start from July 2007, this journal publishes two times a year, in July and January. Besides regular writers, for each volume, the contents will be contributed by invited contributors who experts in mathematics education either from Indonesia or abroad. The journal invites original research articles and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The whole spectrum of research in mathematics education are welcome, which includes, but is not limited to the following topics Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) or Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia, Design/Development Research in Mathematics Education, Mathematics Ability, and PISA Task.

Abstract

Evaluation of the argumentation structure is needed to check the quality of student argumentation to produce appropriate problem-solving. Such evaluation can be carried out by identifying the constituent components of the argument. This study aims to describe the structure of student argumentation in solving statistical problems based on the Adversity Quotient (AQ). This qualitative descriptive type of research involved 52 students who were taking statistical methods courses. Participants were classified into three Categories of Adversity Quotient based on the results of the ARP (Adversity Response Profile) questionnaire. Data were obtained using statistical problem tests and interviews. The results showed that students with the AQ Climber category were able to meet all the constituent components of argumentation when solving statistical problems. AQ Camper-type students are only able to meet three components, namely claims, evidence, and reasoning. Meanwhile, students with the AQ Quitter type are only able to fulfill one component, namely claims. Based on the results of the study, the level of Adversity Quotient determines the quality of the student's argumentation structure when solving statistical problems.

Abstract

The connection ability and disposition of mathematics of junior high school students still need to be improved. This research purpose to analyze the enhancement of connection of mathematics abilities and mathematical dispositions of students who received CORE learning models and conventional learning and to analyze the correlation between the connection abilities and students’ dispositions. This study uses the embedded type Mixed Method. The population was all eighth-grade students one of the public junior high schools in Pangalengan, Bandung Regency, and the sample involved as many as 74 students. The instruments used were a mathematical connection ability test, a disposition questionnaire, an observation sheet, and an interview guide. Analysis of data used two Independent Sample t-Test and Mann Whitney test. The results showed that: 1) the improvement of the connection ability of students who received CORE learning was better than students who received conventional learning 2) the disposition of students who received the CORE learning model was better than students who received conventional learning models, 3) there was no relationship between connection ability and disposition of students using the CORE learning model. The conclusion is CORE model is effective to improve students' mathematical connection ability and mathematical disposition.

Abstract

This development research aims to produce PISA-like mathematics problems with quantity content using a valid and practical COVID-19 context and to investigate the potential effect of these problems on mathematical literacy skills. This research employed a development research design with two stages: preliminary and formative evaluations. This study also employed the Lesson Study Learning Community (LSLC) system in the process of development and implementation. This study involved eighth-grade students aged 13-15 years at SMP Negeri 19 Palembang. The data were collected using walk-through, document, observation, interview, and test techniques. This study produced 6 units and 12 items of PISA-like mathematics problems with several content characteristics of the COVID-19 context, including working, personal, and social contexts and levels that agree with the 2018 PISA framework; and competence processes, such as mathematical literacy skills and standardized linguistic skills that can be applied and interpreted by students. To conclude, the developed PISA-like mathematics problems are valid and practical and potentially affect mathematical literacy skills and learning to confront life skills during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This research aimed to produce a valid and practical product in the form of a student worksheet using the Indonesian version of the Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) approach in the classroom context with an orientation toward students’ conceptual understanding and to figure out the potential effect of the student worksheet developed. It is a piece of development research under the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model. Data collection was performed using documentation, a questionnaire, and a test. The object of this research was the development of a student worksheet using the PMRI approach within the classroom context with an orientation toward students’ conceptual understanding. Meanwhile, the subjects of the research were students of grade X of SMAN 06 Banyuasin. The research results showed that the student worksheet produced was declared valid (with an average score of 90.83), practical (based on the students’ questionnaire responses, with a score of 79.65), and potentially influential to a high degree (based on the students’ test results, with a percentage of 84%). Therefore, the student worksheet that was developed using the PMRI approach within the classroom context with an orientation toward students’ conceptual understanding was worth using in the learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to produce valid and practical PISA-based numerical problems in the context of the pandemic period and to find out the role of the questions in the form of potential effects on the mathematical literacy skills of secondary school students. This research uses developmental research design, which has 2 stages, namely preliminary and formative evaluation (self evaluation, expert review, one-to-one and small group validation, and field test). The participants in this study were students in Grade 8 who were under the age of 15 and different levels of skills. Data analysis was done descriptively by conducting observations, tests, interviews, and document analysis. The research was conducted face-to-face and via Zoom and WhatsApp Group (WAG) to produce valid and practical PISA-like arithmetic questions. Based on the students' responses, it can be stated that the questions presented are in the practical category because they can be completed quickly by students, they can be understood well by students, and they have the potential effect on students' mathematical literacy skills. In addition, there is a diversity of answers between one students and another according to the level of difficulty that is appropriate for Grade 8 students. This proves that a PISA-like numeration problem in the context of the religious day during a pandemic can help improve students' mathematical literacy.

Abstract

Fractions remain predominantly one of the most challenging topics to teach and learn. Brunei Darussalam is no exception, where a few local researches reported that students performed poorly in fraction topics. To understand this situation, this study focuses on pupils’ understanding in solving problems on fractions. Specifically, this study investigated Year 5 pupils’ conceptual and procedural performance on the addition of fractions. This study employed a quantitative research approach involving 572 primary school children. A test consisting of six carefully planned questions on fractions was used as the research instrument. The questions were divided into two sections to test pupils’ conceptual and procedural understanding laterally. The findings from this study revealed that children performed better in the procedural than in the conceptual questions. It can be concluded that most Year 5 pupils can correctly attempt the addition of fractions via procedural approach without understanding the essential concepts involved. Recommendation for future research was also discussed.

Abstract

This study aims to determine mathematical abilities of the students in grade 8 in solving statistical problem using RME and LSLC in online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Learning began with the provision of were given interactive videos as an asynchronous pre-learning stage. Furthermore, at the synchronous stage, students were given sharing tasks and jumping tasks then synchronous activities were closed by giving independent assignments. In asynchronous pre-learning, students sent independent assignments via Google Classroom at a predetermined time. Subjects in this study were 31 eight graders junior high school students. This research used a descriptive method, where the data were obtained by using observation, test, and interview. The data were analyzed qualitatively descriptively.The result of this study is students’ abilities in a good category with an average  68,5. Therefore, it is concluded that RME and LSLC are suitable for use during a pandemic as teaching methods for statistics.

Abstract

This research aims to produce a valid and practical e-module using the Bengkulu context that potentially affects students' literacy skills to understand the materials of patterns and number sequences. This research employed a research and development method. The development stages refer to Plomp’s five developments: (1) preliminary research, (2) the prototype-making stage, and (3) the assessment stage. The subjects of this research were 24 eighth-graders of  SMP Negeri 6 Bengkulu City. The data collection techniques of this research were observation and test. Meanwhile, the research instruments were validation instruments, questionnaires, and literacy test questions. Validity analysis was conducted descriptively and consisted of an analysis of validity, practicality, and literacy test results. The average score of the expert validity is 0.64 and meets the valid criterion. The e-module has a practical category with a score of 3.55, and the requirements are very practical. The e-module has impacted students' literacy skills with an average score of 74.25 or good criteria. Moreover, e-module using Bengkulu context problems can encourage students to improve their mathematical literacy skills.
