Abstract

This paper discusses the use of grammar as a strategy to express politeness in Bugis society. This is based on the research I conducted in 2005 in two different Bugis communities: the first was in Awangpone, a rural area and the second was in Parepare. There are three main aspects of Bugis grammar used by Bugis people to encode their politeness. The first one is the pronoun system, in which Bugis speakers use idi’, ta-, or -ki, (the 1st plural inclusive pronoun) to address people politely rather than using iko, mu-, and –nu (the 2nd person pronoun). The second one is the use of participant avoiders such as passive voice di- or terms such as tauwé ‘people’ or anu ‘something or someone’ to avoid mentioning the subject or object directly. Another device is the phonological alternations between final –o and final –i/–é, in which final –o is less polite than final –i/–é such as the pairs iyé’/iyo ‘yes’ or –mi/-mo ‘just’.

Abstract

Language acquisition starts from the ability of listening basic letter(iktisab al-ashwat) since child age. The letter of a language is limited in number, and sometimes there is similarity of letters among languages. The similarity of letters in two languages make it easy to learn the language. On the contrary, the obstacle of language learning can be caused by different letters between two languages (mother tongue and second/foreign language). The problem may be caused by minimal pairs (tsunaiyat al-shughro). This research aims at finding out the error of minimal pair acquisition, with the subject of Indonesian students in Jami’ah Malik Saud Saudi Arabia, with the method of error analysis. The study concludes that in iktisab al-ashwat of minimal pairs, the error is around 3,3 %-58,3%. Second: the error on minimal pairs occurs on the letters shift ?? ?? ? to be ? , letter ? to be ? , letter ? to be ? , letter ? to be ? , letter ? to be ?? , and letter ? to be ?.

Abstract

The development of Arabic Grammar by time is not far from the figure of this science pioneer, Sibawaih (Abu Bisyr bin Usman bin Qunbur). From this age, the emergence of topics is in Nahwu. Among these topics that are always appearing is Al-Maf’ul. Even Sibawaih is regarded as pioneer in Nahwu, in fact, there are also many experts that are not in line with him, they are from Classic Nahwu (Al Qudama) or contemporer (Al Muhdatsun). Because the language is still develop in line with the time, then the topics of language also develop like Al-Maf’ul that is still relevant for reviewed by the reviewer of this science. There are many opinions about Al-Maf’ul that is in fact, what is Maf’ul Bih or Maf’ul Muthlaq or other. By the arguments appear for supporting each theory, sure will make us more critic to review deeper in language science that in time always change.

Abstract

This paper questions the urgency of foreign language learning at early age by covering some arguments on the acquisition and bilingualism. Nowadays in Indonesia, under the interest of education, bilingual learning is undertaken by adopting the theory of bilingual acquisition referring to Chomsky’s ideas. In fact, the foreign language learning is not always in line with the principle of language acquisition especially for the early age children. The globalization era requires foreign language mastery so that for many institutions of children education have got the bilingual learning. As the example, some of Islamic educational institutions at the level of playgroup have applied the instruction in English and teaching Arabic words, by considering that the earlier foreign language learning is the better, and the fact that the golden age of brain development occurs at the first five years. This needs to be analyzed further, because there is also important task to have mother tongue language acquisition. For the community of multilingual such as in Indonesia, the acquisition of many languages is unavoidable. Therefore, parents are faced with two choices: To prior the mother tongue and bahasa Indonesia as second language or encourage the bilingual learning of Arabic and English.

Abstract

Naguib’s Islamization of science is a response to negative impacts of modern science progress (the West) which according to him is not based on Islamic world view. This has an impact on epistemological aspects, so that it can not be used as a method of scientific development in Islamic science. Therefore, there should be reformation of ontology and epistemology to get harmony and usefullness for the development of Islamic sciences. According to Naguib, world view of Islam is monotheism, unity, integration between psyche and physical, spiritual and material, even the spiritual aspect is more important. Based on this, the source of knowledge is not just the material of objects but the meaning of the object, so that knowledge does not fall on positivistic, materialistic and empiric. The method of achieving knowledge is done through the power of observation, rational thought, interpretations of revelation and intuition. The methods are not contradictory but complementary. As the first step of Islamization of science, which change the aspect of metaphysics (world view) and epistemology, according to Naguib, can be started by Islamization of language

Abstract

One of approaches in comprehending al-Qur’an is semantic or meaning approach. There are three ways to goin the meaning; first is through microstructure, that is to get the meaning of text through structural analysis of sentence and phrase. Second, stylistic, that is the special stylistic of al-Qur’an to be the tool to find the meaning of the text. Third, semantic, that is the choice of word or vocabulary used in al-Qur’an has basic meaning and relational meaning. This paper is intended to observe the words that contain doa explicitly, that is the verse of doa with the key word “fi’il madhi, and amar”. The research belongs to library research of qualitative approach. After analyzing the key word, the conclusions are: 1) the basic meaning of the key word in the verse of doa in al-Qur’an has lexical meaning, while the relational meaning is the meaning produced by the textual and contextual, in this case the relational meaning of the verse of doa constitutes, of synonym, antonym, and ambiguity. 2) In the verse of doa in al-Qur’an, the relational meaning is not always attached to the key words; although it is related to the other words, it sometimes still has lexical meaning.

Abstract

This paper aims at describing psychological factors in language acquisition and learning for human being who learn second language acquisition. Stephens found that external factors such as the characteristic of teacher, class and school condition had consistently no relation with the success of learning foreign language. On the other hand, student’s psychological conditions, as one of the internal factors, are potential to influence the foreign or second language acquisition. Psychological factor is a factor that is mentally or spiritually concerned with the aspects in students’ acquisition. At least, four of many factors, such as anxiety, attitude, aptitude, and motivation influence the students’ process of language acquisition. However, to cope the psychological problems of learning second language, Kando, D. suggests the five strategies for coping with language anxiety, among of them are preparation strategy, relaxation, positive thinking, peer, and labeled resignation. Therefore, in maximizing the result of second language acquisition, the five strategies illustrated by Kando are important as an alternative solution.
