Abstract

The changing of newspapers format and design in Indonesia become a prominence phenomenon in recent times. When Kompas, a national leading newspaper in Indonesia, changed its format and design, it was sufficiently enough to claim that McJournalism phenomenon started to appear in Indonesia. McJournalism, adopted by Bob Franklin from Ritzer’s famous term “McDonaldization,” consisted of four characteristic: efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control. An analysis to such changes on some Indonesian major newspaper formats and designs have proven that the policy led also to the changing of mechanisms and working routines in those newspapers as well.

Abstract

This article explores the meaning of triadic leadership interaction pattern found in Minangkabau culture of West Sumatera. Consisted of Ninik Mamak (Elders), Alim Ulama (Religious Leader), and Cerdik Pandai (Scholars and Intellectuals), the three party form the administration of Nagari—a cultural domain in Minangkabau discourse. Based on thesis research, it is found that each party is autonomously operated, though intensely interacted. The administration of Nagari has enliven the tradition called Tungku Tigo Sajarangan, which describe the harmonious relationship delivered through group communication among Elders, Religious Leaders, and Scholars.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to describe communication as discourse perspective. In this perspective communication is seen an activity to construct of reality into a discourse that some interests entering the discourse. The perspective is to complete to the others ones, first transmissions perspective. Communication is to transmit of messages linearly. Second, perspective of display. Communication is an effort to exhibit many messages for gaining audiences attention. Third, generating of meaning perspective where we use symbols to create meaning. Fourth, ritual perspective which communication as a rites to maintain commonness and solidarity of the participants.

Abstract

This research aimed to gain a clear description over some factors which influenced communication process conducted by agricultural facilitators—both partially, and simultaneously. Employing explanatory method of research, a sample of 116 agricultural facilitators from Kabupaten Indramayu, Kabupaten Bandung, and Kabupaten Tasikmalaya was chosen using stratified random sampling. Data was generated from questionnaire and a series of selected interviews. It is found that personal and situational factors affected facilitators communication act in the three regions. Compared with situational factors, personal factors have stronger effect.

Abstract

Broadcasting Act No. 32/2002 has transformed Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) and Televisi Republik Indonesia (TVRI) from a state-owned-body to public-broadcasting-service. This research aimed to investigate the impacts experienced by those two organizations concerning their philosophies, role, functions, and its implementation on operational levels. Utilizing case studies in West Java and South Sulawesi (Makasar), it is found that broadcasting dynamics in both area are highly dynamic. On the level of normative, both are consistent enough. Abstract

According to research conducted by Yayasan Kesejahteraan Anak Indonesia (Indonesian Children Wealth Foundation—YKAI), children spent their times in front of TV more than 20-25 hours/week, or 3-4 hours/day. Another research stated that children viewing habit reached a relatively high exposure. Based on these facts, this article speaks about the importance to teach children how to appreciate lesson films and other audiovisuals. The process included several steps, such as an introduction to the duty and responsibility of media worker or film maker toward their masterpiece and their audience, reading critics and reference to reduce disappointment if someone meets an underdeveloped or low quality film.

Abstract

In the field of mass communication, studies concerning children and mass media always provide interesting perspectives, especially concerning the effect of television viewing . Each year, communication experts, psychologists, as well as parents attended this issue seriously. From communication and psychological perspectives, televisions were blamed as the source of the problem due to bad program qualities as well as high frequent of TV  violence, and sexual content. Employing Critical Theories for analyzing device, this article addresses the map of children program on TV, and how the program was packed. Children program on TV still face many obstacles, including the challenge thrown by rating on media market industries.

Abstract

May 27th, 2006, a-5.9-Richter scale-of-earthquake is collapsing Jogja and its surrounding. More than 5.800 inhabitants dead, hundreds of thousands other were injured. The city collapsed, along with its economy which suffered at least 8-billion-rupiahs-loss. Days after the earthquake, there were complaints everywhere concerning the system of logistic supply for the victims. The lack of food, unreachable locations, the slow treatment of injured victims were seen everywhere. From communication perspective, these complaints marked the lack of quality in communication system as main part of post-disaster-management. To overcome such problems, the local government in disaster area must build SCM—supply chain management—as the approach to communication-management system in order to distribute logistics for the victims. SCM consisted of three elements: supply chain network, supply chain process, and supply chain management. Although based on management approach, SCM covered comprehensive issues such as the importance of data, research, goals identification, transportation facilities, along with moral, attitude, and cultural sensitivity.

Abstract

Today we faced an increasing number and forms of information delivered from media channels throughout the world. The speed of change and the reach of (tele)communication technology has shaped a new way of communication methods, new audience behavior, which in turn also created a new cultural landscape. In Islamic perspective, information and communication activities were perceived as a way to deliver thoughtful and moral messages to people. The essence of communication lies in the process of expressing message effectively by communications facilities. Communication must be done repeatedly in order to reach intended effects. A communicator, therefore, has to acquire basics of communication method to touch his/her audience. This article points out some basics of Islamic communication which are no different with the principles of general communication.

Abstract

Rapid development of communication technology has shaped a new cultural landscape. In effect, the nature of mass media industry also changed a lot. To anticipate this new development, communication discipline needs a new study focused on media economy. Media economy is combination of two perspectives in media studies: business-economy perspective and media communication perspectives. The dimension of media in media economy emphasized three areas: production, content, and audiences. The dimension of economy in media economy studies focused on structure, conduct/policy, and performance. Meanwhile, the management of media corporation are consisted of revenue, cost and profit dimensions.
