Abstract

Abstract: Reviewing a news text narrative has strategic value due to mass media role to construct an empirical understanding and lead to collective memory reproduction of the reality constructed. This study analyzes the dramatic aspects related to human rights issues in the Trisakti tragedy of 1998 in the GATRA magazine using Seymour Chatman’s structural narative. The result shows that the dramatic intention is formed through the composition of story (plot, contingency, anachronistic narrative sequence, sequence repetition, omission events) and discourse (detail, coherence, active-passive sentence, lexicon, metaphor). News containing drama could create incomplete understanding of the reported reality.

Abstract

Abstract: Organizational communication climate has become a major concept in organizational communication since it was coined by W. Charles Redding in 1972. Its conceptual origin, however, goes back to the much earlier work of of Chester Barnard (1938). Numerous research works since early 1970’s have empirically tested its position as a major variable for organizational effectiveness. It is now assumed that communication climate is the sine qua non for effective organizational management. This article traces the development of our understanding of the concept through the works of two different schools of thought, namely the functionalist and the interpretivist ones. Implications for future research are carefully described.

Abstract

The research aims to test situational crisis communication and attribution theories in Indonesian context. Crisis threats companies’ reputation and affects the public’s attribution which will lead to the creation of punitive behavior from the public towards the organization. The study used a quantitative approach with experimental method and content analysis in the pre-research. Involving 90 respondents, the research fi nds that mass media infl uences public’s attribution within the experimental group who were given positive and negative news. The research shows that the crisis history and the relational reputation determine the public attribution toward the initial crisis responsibility.

Abstract

Abstract : Interest in corporate culture rapidly grew among organization and management researchers and practitioners in Indonesia since 1990. They were impressed by the concept of strong corporate culture which according to research reports was closely related to high corporate performance. In fact, they were so excited by the fact that strong corporate culture could be a competitive advantage in the era of global competion. This article describes that building a strong corporate culture needs a consistent socialization for values internalization and effective behavioral practice. In addition, socialization is a continuing learning process beyond initiation programs for new employees which involves reward system consistency as well as a powerful idden hierarchy known as the company’s cultural network.
