Abstract

Red spinach (Amaranthus tricolor) is a leafy vegetable known for its distinctive red or purplish leaves. This plant is widely cultivated as its leaves are edible and packed with essential nutrients beneficial to the body. Red spinach is rich in antioxidants such as beta-carotene and vitamin C, along with vital minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium, which support overall health. Regular consumption of red spinach is believed to improve blood circulation, boost immunity, prevent anemia, accelerate wound healing, and promote bone health due to its comprehensive nutritional content. This article aims to review the pharmacological activities of red spinach based on literature from credible sources such as Google Scholar, Garuda, Neliti, and Sinta, focusing on publications within the past five years. The review findings reveal that red spinach possesses various potential pharmacological properties. These include antioxidant activity, anemia treatment, reduction of liver enzymes such as SGOT and SGPT, improvement of liver function, and enhancement of metabolic processes. Additionally, red spinach is recognized for its benefits in maintaining facial skin health, suggesting its potential as a natural ingredient in skincare products. Abstract

Infectious and communicable diseases remain one of the leading causes of mortality in Indonesia and worldwide. Several pathogenic bacteria can cause infections, one of which is Staphylococcus aureus. This bacterium can lead to a variety of conditions, including mastitis, dermatitis (skin inflammation), respiratory tract infections, impetigo, abscesses, toxic shock syndrome, and food poisoning. With the advent of antibiotics, an increasing number of bacterial strains have developed antibiotic resistance. The primary cause of this resistance is the widespread and irrational use of antibiotics, which allows some bacteria to survive and become resistant. The snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata laurentii) contains compounds with antibacterial properties, such as tannins, saponins, and flavonoids. This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial activity of snake plant extract against Staphylococcus aureus. The research design used was a laboratory-based observational study. The antibacterial activity of the snake plant leaf extract was tested at concentrations of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% against Staphylococcus aureus using the dilution method to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). The results showed that the snake plant extract exhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus at all tested concentrations (20% to 100%). The MIC was observed at a concentration of 20%, while the MBC was found at 40%. These findings confirm that the extract of Sansevieria trifasciata laurentii has inhibitory effects on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is an inherited kidney disorder characterized by the formation of multiple fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys, frequently involving other organs such as the liver. It is a progressive condition that can lead to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This case report aims to explore the clinical course and management approach of a PKD patient with poor follow-up adherence since diagnosis. A 55-year-old female with a diagnosis of PKD since 2009 presented with abdominal enlargement, fatigue, and right upper quadrant discomfort. Despite a positive family history, the patient did not receive regular monitoring and relied on herbal remedies. Over 16 years, disease progression was marked by significant increases in serum urea and creatinine, development of multiple renal and hepatic cysts, and progression to chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 4–5. The patient currently suffers from hepatic cyst complications and ESRD. This case highlights the accelerated progression of PKD in the absence of consistent clinical monitoring and early therapeutic intervention. It underscores the importance of early detection, regular renal function evaluation, patient and family education, and supportive care. Planning for renal replacement therapy and genetic screening of offspring are crucial to mitigate disease progression and improve outcomes in PKD patients.

Abstract

Wound causes mechanical bleeding, inducing a response of the body to fix itself which undergoes a wound healing process through a few phases; hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and maturation or remodelling. Wound healing is a complex process due to biocellular and biochemistry activities occuring continously. One of the natural treatments is the administration of randu (Ceiba pentandra) leaf, a Spermatophyte which has been identified and used for its healing properties. This study was an experimental study with a post-test-only control group design, and datas were analyzed using a non-parametric Kruskal Wallis test. Treatments were given randu (Ceiba pentandra) leaf extract, grouped into 4: (K1): a negative control group, (P1): 40 ml of randu (Ceiba pentandra) leaf extract, (P2): 60 ml of randu (Ceiba pentandra) leaf extract, and (P3): 80 ml of randu (Ceiba pentandra) leaf extract. Through this study, randu (Ceiba pentandra) leaf extracts were rated based on the its wound healing rate and showed results of 80 ml, 60 ml, and 40 ml respectively. There is an effect of administration of randu (Ceiba pentandra) leaf extract on cut wound healing in mice (Mus musculus L) (p=0,037)

Abstract

Metabolic syndrome is a collection of disorders that include insulin resistance, central obesity, dyslipidemia and high blood pressure. Definitions and criteria for diagnosing metabolic syndrome are constantly changing and are a topic of debate. In general, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (SM) worldwide ranges from 20-25%, while in Indonesia it is 23.34%, with a higher prevalence in men (26.2%) than women (21.4%). Since hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus are chronic diseases and require long-term treatment, family physician services are needed to manage these diseases. The analysis in this study is a case report with primary data obtained from anamnesis and physical examination at the health center, and follow-up examinations during home visits to obtain environmental and social data. Secondary data were obtained from the patient's medical record at the Satellite Health Center. Assessment was carried out based on holistic diagnosis from the beginning, process, and end of the study quantitatively and qualitatively. In this case, diagnosis and treatment have been carried out according to theory and relevant journal references. After the intervention was given, there was an improvement in clinical symptoms and increased understanding of the patient and his family. The diagnosis and management of this patient was carried out holistically, patient centered, family approach, and community oriented. Based on a number of recent theories and studies, there is an increase in knowledge among the patient's family.

Abstract

Senile cataracts and obesity are two prevalent health conditions frequently observed among the adult and elderly population. Senile cataracts are characterized by lens clouding, leading to visual impairment, while obesity involves excessive fat accumulation, which can exacerbate ocular health through mechanisms of oxidative stress and systemic inflammation. The aim of this study was to apply a holistic and comprehensive family medicine approach to identify both internal and external risk factors and manage these issues based on Evidence-Based Medicine, incorporating family-approached, patient-centered, and community-oriented care. This research was conducted as a case report, with primary data gathered through anamnesis, physical examination, and home visits, and secondary data collected from the patient’s medical records. The case involved a 48-year-old male, Mr. D, who presented with progressively worsening blurred vision in his right eye over the past five months, originating two years prior. The patient reported overeating habits without regular physical activity. Physical examination revealed stable vital signs and a BMI of 36.3 kg/m² (obesity grade II). Local eye exam findings showed a right eye visual acuity of 1/300 with lens opacity and a negative shadow test. Both the patient and his family expressed concern due to their limited understanding of his condition. The diagnosis and management were carried out holistically—emphasizing patient-centered care, family involvement, and community support—based on current theories and research. Post-intervention, there was a notable improvement in the patient’s and family’s knowledge and behavior, contributing to better quality of life and overall health maintenance.
