Abstract

In recent years, many applications have been implemented in embedded systems and mobile Internet of Things (IoT) devices that typically have constrained resources, smaller power budget, and exhibit "smartness" or intelligence. To implement computation-intensive and resource-hungry Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) in this class of devices, many research groups have developed specialized parallel accelerators using Graphical Processing Units (GPU), Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), or Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC). An alternative computing paradigm called Stochastic Computing (SC) can implement CNN with low hardware footprint and power consumption. To enable building more efficient SC CNN, this work incorporates the CNN basic functions in SC that exploit correlation, share Random Number Generators (RNG), and is more robust to rounding error. Experimental results show our proposed solution provides significant savings in hardware footprint and increased accuracy for the SC CNN basic functions circuits compared to previous work.

Abstract

This research developed a small RLSA antenna that mimics the specification of a Wi-Fi antenna that is available in markets, which is a Back Fires 17 dBi LAN antenna. This research used the size of the back fires antenna as the size for the RLSA antenna. Base on this size, we designed and simulated 71 RLSA antenna models. Among them, we chose a best model and fabricated its prototype. We measured the prototype and found that the measurement result fits the simulation result, thus verifying the correctness of the antenna model. Furthermore, we analysed that with the same size, our RLSA antenna has better performance compared to the back fires antenna, in term of gain (0,53 dB higher), and in term of bandwidth (1075 MHz wider). We also found that our RLSA antenna is lighter and thinner compared to the back fires antenna. We also test the RLSA antenna in real condition for indoor and outdoor communication link. The test showed that the RLSA antenna can performs properly.

Abstract

This paper reports about the development of a modular unit of a higher level framework or tool whose intended objective is the creation of animated lessons for basic programming (CS1) course in computer science discipline with visual aids. The goal of such lessons is to address the difficulties faced by the novice programmers in CS1 course.This module here after referred to as ‘type writer’allows instructors to render programmes or code snippets in a live typing manner as opposed to their sudden or en-block placement on the presentation area like a Power Point Slide; a commonly used approach in the present day eLearning.This project is planned to be executed in two stages and ‘type writer’ is the outcome of the first stage. This would be combined with another two modules that are planned to be developed in the second stage, to make the complete tool. The entire tool would be developed in Action Script 3.0 language that works on Adobe Flash Platform.

Abstract

In this paper, a reconfigurable dual band-notched ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna is presented. The antenna design consists of a circular shape with two pairs of the L-resonator. To realize the notch characteristics in WLAN at 5.2 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands, the half wavelength of the L-resonator is introduced in the design. The T-shaped notch is etched in the ground to enhance the bandwidth which covers the UWB operating frequency range from 3.219 – 10.863 GHz. The proposed reconfigurable dual band-notched UWB antenna shows good impedance matching for the simulated in the physical layout. Furthermore, the proposed antenna has a compact size of 37.6 x 28 mm2. This proposed reconfigurable design can provide an alternative solution for the wireless system in the designing of a band-notched antenna with a good tuning capability.

Abstract

The 4D gravity or time lapse gravity has been used many reseracher to identify fluid injection in oil reservoir. The objective of this study is to find the better way in interpreting 4D gravity anomaly due to fluid injection around the reservoir. Radial Derivatives are derivative values of gravity anomalies against horizontal distances in the radial direction. Radial inversion is a two-dimensional inversion of lines with radial directions resulting in a 3-dimension model. Time lapse microgravity research have been performed in “X Oil Field” with amount of 604 data point covering area of 4000m x 5000m. This Radial derivative and Radial inversion have been aplied at an injection well of the X oil field. The yield show that 4D gravity anomaly value due to injection is 0.02 mGal to 0.36 mGal. Radial derivative value in the area is 0 micro Gal/cm to 0,012 mGal/meter. Radial inversion shows radius of fluid front movement is 304 meters to 1120 meters. Radial derivative and Radial inversion have been proven fairly good to identify injected fluid movement in the reservoir.

Abstract

Step-up converter is widely used to increase DC voltage level on PV systems either off-grid or grid connected. One of the step-up converters often used in PV systems is SEPIC converter. To improve its performance, many SEPIC converters have been modified. However, performance on various conditions has not been further investigated. In this study, the modified SEPIC converter was investigated under various change conditions for grid-connected PV applications. This converter was modelled and simulated using PSIM software. The modified SEPIC converter received input from PV array 15 kWp, and its output was connected to the three-phase inverter with grid and load. The irradiance level and ambient temperature were varied to test its performance and compared to Boost converter and SEPIC converter. For all tests, the performance of modified SEPIC converter was better than other step-up converters because it was able to rectify the quality of output voltage and more efficient.

Abstract

The handwriting is an object that can describe information about the author implicitly. For example, it is able to predict the gender. Recently, the gender prediction based on handwriting becomes an interesting research. Even in 2013, an competition for prediction gender from handwriting has been held by Kaggle. However, the accuracies of current approaches are relatively low. So, in this study, we attempt to implement Fuzzy Rule-Based Classification Systems (FRBCSs) for gender predictions from handwriting. Three stages are conducted to achieve the objective, as follows: defining some features based on Graphology Techniques (e.g., pressure, height, and margin on writing), collecting real datasets, processing on digital images (i.e., image segmentation, projection profiles, and margin calculation, etc.), and implementing FRBCSs. The implemented algorithm based on FRBCSs in this research is Chi’s Algorithm, which is a method based on Fuzzy Logic for classification tasks. Moreover, some experiments and analysis, involving 75 respondents consisting of 36 males and 39 females, have been done to validate the proposed model. From the simulations, the classification rate obtained is 76%. Besides improving the accuracy rate, the proposed model can provide an understandable model by utilizing fuzzy rule-based systems.

Abstract

The current air quality monitoring system cannot cover a large area, not real-time and has not implemented big data analysis technology with high accuracy. The purpose of an integration Mobile Sensor Network and Internet of Things system is to build air quality monitoring system that able to monitor in wide coverage. This system consists of Vehicle as a Mobile Sensors Network (VaaMSN) as edge computing and Smart Environment Monitoring and Analytic in Real-time (SEMAR) cloud computing. VaaMSN is a package of air quality sensor, GPS, 4G WiFi modem and single board computing. SEMAR cloud computing has a time-series database for real-time visualization, Big Data environment and analytics use the Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Decision Tree (DT) algorithm. The output from the system are maps, table, and graph visualization. The evaluation obtained from the experimental results shows that the accuracy of both algorithms reaches more than 90%. However, Mean Square Error (MSE) value of SVM algorithm about 0.03076293, but DT algorithm has 10x smaller MSE value than SVM algorithm.

Abstract

The precise indoor tracking system using Xbee signal strength protocol has become a potential research to the WSN applications. The main aspects for the success tracking system is accuracy performance based on location estimation. The improvement of location estimation is complicated issue, especially using RSSI with low accuracy due to the signal attenuation from multipath effect at indoor propagation. Hence, many existing research typically focused on specific methods for providing improvement schemes at tracking system area. Then, we propose hybrid filter schemes, including extended gradient filter (EGF) for filtering noise signal based distance modification, and modified extended Kalman filter (MIEKF) will be combined with trilateration for filtering the error position estimation. Using mobile cooperative tracking scenario refers to our previous work, the proposed hybrid filter scheme which is called modified iterated extended gradient Kalman filter (MIEGKF) can optimize the error estimation around 41.28% reduction with 0.63 meters MSE (mean square error) value.

Abstract

This study dealt with output voltage regulation of boost converter using observer based sliding mode controller comprises of adaptive PI sliding surface. Observer was designed to estimate the inductor current value, such that no sensor was required as a feedback. Adaptive PI sliding surface was constructed from the difference between estimated inductor current and its reference value. The stability of proposed method was ensured by using Lyapunov direct method. To test the system performance, numerical simulation was conducted. The result indicated that the integral absolute error value of proposed method was 0.19, which was 7 times less than sliding mode with PI sliding surface. Consequently, the proposed method was able to estimate accurately the inductor value, track the reference voltage perfectly, and show its robustness against parameter variations.
