Abstract

Polymer nanocomposites have been used for various important industrial applications. The preparation of high density polyethylene composed with Na-montmorillonite nanofiller using melt compounding method for different concentrations of clay-nano filler of 0%, 2%, 6%, 10%, and 15% has been successfully done. The morphology of the obtained samples was optimized and characterized by scanning electron microscope showing the formation of the polymer nanocomposites. The thermal stability and dielectric properties were measured for the prepared samples. Thermal gravimetric analysis results show that thermal stability in polymer nanocomposites is more than that in the base polymer. It has been shown that the polymer nanocomposites exhibit some very different dielectric characteristics when compared to the base polymer. The dielectric breakdown strength is enhanced by the addition of clay-nano filler. The dielectric constant (εr) and dissipation factor (Tan δ) have been studied in the frequency range 200 Hz to 2 MHz at room temperature indicating that enhancements have been occurred in εr and Tan δ by the addition of clay-nano filler in the polymer material when compared with the pure material.

Abstract

Predicting ventricular tachyarrhythmia (VTA) provides opportunities to reduce casualties due to sudden cardiac death. However, prediction accuracy is still need improvement. In this paper, we propose a method that can predict VTA events using support vector machine (SVM) that trained with HRV features from heart rate variability (HRV). The Spontaneous Ventricular Tachyarrhythmia Database (Medtronic Version 1.0), comprising 106 pre-VT records, 26 pre-VF records, and 135 control data, is used.  Fifty percent of the data was used to train the SVM, and the remainder was used to verify the performance. Each data set was subjected to preprocessing and HRV feature extraction. After correcting the ectopic beats, 5 minutes RR intervals prior to each event was cropped for feature extraction. Extraction of the time domain, spectral, non-linear and bispectrum features were performed subsequently. Furthermore, both t-test and genetic algorithm (GA) were used to optimize the HRV feature subset. With optimized feature subset by GA, proposed method of current work able to outperform previous works with 77.94%, 80.88% and 79.41 % for senstivity, specificity and accuracy respectively.

Abstract

The separation between the low-voltage part and high-voltage part of the converter is formed by a transformer that transfers power while jamming the DC ring. The resonant mode power oscillator is utilized to allow elevated competence power transfer. The on-chip transformer is probable to have elevated value inductance, elevated quality factors and elevated coupling coefficient to decrease the loss in the oscillation. The performance of a transformer is extremely dependent on the structure, topology and other essential structures that create it compatible with the integrated circuits IC process such as patterned ground shield (PGS). Different types of transformers are modeled and simulated in MATLAB; the performances are compared to select the optimum design. The on-chip transformer model is simulated and the Results of MATLAB simulation are exposed, showing an excellent agreement in radio frequency RF.

Abstract

Due to energy limitation and constraint in communication capabilities, the undesirable high battery power consumption has become one of the major issues in wireless sensor network (WSN). Therefore, a collaborative beamforming (CB) method was introduced with the aim to improve the radiation beampattern in order to compensate the power consumption. A CB is a technique which can increase the sensor node gain and performance by aiming at the desired objectives through intelligent capabilities. The sensor nodes were located randomly in WSN environment. The nodes were designed to cooperate among each other and act as a collaborative antenna array. The configuration of the collaborative nodes was modeled in circular array formation. The position of array nodes was determined by obtaining the optimum parameters pertaining to the antenna array which implemented by using Backtracking Search Optimization Algorithm (BSA). The parameter considered in the project was the side-lobe level minimization. It was observed that, the suppression of side-lobe level for BSA was better compared to the radiation beampattern obtained for conventional uniform circular array.

Abstract

In this paper, the analytical approach of MOS transistor mismatch effect on common-mode gain of cross-coupled amplifier is presented. Transconductance (MOS transistor parameter) mismatch effect on common-mode gain of cross-coupled amplifier was analyzed. This study was started with mathematical derivation for representing the mismatch effect of transconductance between 2 differential pairs of crosscoupled amplifier due to common-mode voltage. The derivation result was simulated based on Monte Carlo simulation with random transconductance mismatch rate from 0.05% until 1%. The common-mode gain increases 36.9 dB and average common-mode gain is -81.1 dB. The transconductance mismatch rate increases followed by increase in common-mode gain. The results can be used by circuit designers to design analog circuits, especially operational amplifier used for biosignals processing to minimize the common-mode gain of their circuits. This research presents aid to circuit designers to improve their circuits performance.

Abstract

In designing an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), such as quadrotor, sometimes an engineer should consider the required cost that is relatively expensive. As we know, quadrotor is one of robots that very usefull and has several advantages for human needs such as disaster area monitoring, air quality monitoring, area mapping, aerial photography, and surveillance. Thus, designing a rapid quadrotor with low-cost components and simple control system needs to be considered here. This paper presents design and implementation of a quadrotor using relatively low-cost components with Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) control system as its controller. The components used consist of microcontroller, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor, Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motor, Electronic Speed Control (ESC), remote control unit, battery, and frame. These components can be easily found in the electronic markets, especially in Indonesia. As an addition, this paper also describes PID control system as flight controller. A simple economic analysis is presented to clarify the cost in designing this quadrotor. Based on experimental testing result, the quadrotor able to fly stably with PID controller although there still overshoot at the attitude responses.

Abstract

This paper presents the radiation characteristics of a 4-bay collinear FM antenna system, both in free-space and with the presence of a metallic tower where the bays are mounted, with the use of powerful computers and accurate antenna simulation software. The radiation characteristics of the array are presented and discussed, such as the total gain, polarization components, circularity, beamwidth and minor lobe of the array. This is to determine the conformity of the array performance with existing standards. The possible effects of the metallic tower and the downward radiation from the minor lobe are emphasized. Being aware with these radiation characteristics, broadcast practitioners can optimize the use of this popular array. Results of numerical analyses show that the array is basically a vertically polarized radiator, the beamwidth is quite small which makes it disadvantageous for high-elevated antenna systems, the metallic tower affects the circularity of the azimuth pattern, and the downward radiation from the minor lobes can cause adverse effects. Adjustments on the basic elements and bay placements are recommended.

Abstract

Energy is a key component in the overall growth of every nation. Insufficient energy delivery hinders political growth, restricts social growth, limits economic growth, and negatively affects the standard of living of citizens, bothin urban and rural areas. Sufficient energy delivery increases food production, improves the standards of living of citizens, improves healthcare and enhancements in other human services, enhances industrial output, provides effective and efficient transportation not forgetting adequate shelter to the citizens of the nation. Currently, there is a significant level of deficiency in Nigeria’s energy sector. This study seeks to address this issue by analysing cost implications of conventional energy source and solar energy source. This study brings to focus the payback period of a solar powered home and the return on investment that might accrue during this time to the residential home owners. Furthermore, the best cost-effective load sharing option for residential owners considering two energy sources is also obtained.
