Abstract

Abstract This study intended to peek into Iranian EFL learners’ metal lexicon through word association tests (WATs). 31 male and female EFL learners studying at Bonab and Marageh language institutes participated in this study. A WAT comprised of 8 English words adopted from Roux’s (2013) word list administered to the participants. The results analyzed and interpreted according to both WA conventional classification and Fitzpatrick’s framework. Within conventional classification (syntagmatic, paradigmatic, and clang), the results confirmed the syntagmatic to paradigmatic change hypothesis (S→P) only between intermediate and upper-intermediate levels. The results also indicated that low intermediate learners besides other conventional factors, associate words based on phonological and orthographical relations. Within Fitzpatrick’s framework, the results indicated that learners generally associate words according to meaning and position across all proficiency levels. However, at low-intermediate level the rate of meaning-based association overwhelms position-based association. Form-based association and erratic association drew the least attention of the participants respectively. Finally, pedagogical implication of this study along with further research idea is discussed. Abstract

Abstract In recent decade, there has been an increasing rate of international students all over the world, but little is known about the marital life of this population. The need to understand graduate students’ intentions to pursue an academic career has become more important over the years. While International students’ cross-cultural adjustment has received considerable attention in the sojourner literature, there is a paucity of research that addresses the unique challenges faced by the married international students. Therefore, this study attempts to examine the empirical findings of various studies that explore factors which contribute to problems of married international students, and have an integrated perspective on the problems that this population faces during their study. The results revealed that acculturation stress, financial stress and social support are the utmost problems that international couples experience. This study offers suggestions for universities to provide facilities that would decrease international students’ marital problems; also to prepare workshops to increase couples’ knowledge of different conflict resolution methods which would be helpful to avoid conflict during their study abroad. Keywords: marital relationship, international students, socio cultural adjustment, academic problem

Abstract

Abstract  Solving mathematical word problems are not easy for elementary school students. Third-grade students of elementary schools cannot understand mathematical word problems perfectly. The appropriate learning method is needed to improve the students’ ability in understanding to solve the questions. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify the role of the scheme learning method to improve students’ ability in solving mathematical word problems. Third-grade students of elementary school took the process of this research. The students were divided into two groups; experimental and control groups. This research would be carried out in three sessions. The measurement of the students’ ability in solving the mathematical word problems was conducted by giving the pre-test and post-test mathematics materials. Data analysis performed used anava mixed design to compare score of students’ abilities in solving the mathematical word problems between experimental and control groups. The result of this study indicated that there were differences in score of students’ abilities in solving the mathematical word problems between experimental group and control group (p=0,039, p<0,05).  Students who received scheme learning method increased their score more than control group. Applying this method can improved students’ ability in solving mathematical word problems. Keywords: scheme learning method, mathematical word problems, ability in solving mathematical word problems.

All the subjects were the students of 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th grade. The subjects were selected from three types of families, intact father children, died father children and divorced father children and was kept in three groups as: present father group, died father group and divorced father group. The statistical analysis of the results by applying statistical treatment test with critical region =1.4, and significance level =0.10 show that intact father children show better academic performance than absent father children. The dyed father children and divorcee’s children show the same academic performance which reveals that father presence play a very significant role in the academic performance of children. The implication of the study will be discussed further. Keyword: Academic performance, father presence, and absent father.
