Abstract

The study is aimed at describing the levels of literacy on the basis of IELTS’ standards of competencies. It is a case study at the first Semester Students of FBIB, Unisbank of 2007/2008 academic year. In the study, twenty students were randomly selected out of total number of students consisting both Diploma and Undergraduate Study Programs. The data were collected by administering IELTS test to those selected students of which the test results were matched against predetermined criteria for literacy levels (Hammond 1992) in order to classify them into the appropriate levels of literacy. The study indicates that all students (100%) were of the performative level of literacy with respect to the overall IELTS scores. Only 25% of the students managed to get informative level in speaking subtest and 20% in reading subtest. It is therefore recommended that literacy education be integrated in the curriculum of FBIB Unisbank, Semarang.   Key Words: Literacy, IELTS

Abstract

This article deals with learners’ Analytical Exposition Monologues. It is argued that the learners tend to bring to the target language the resources of their first language, whether or not those resources are actually available in the target language, resulting in failure to produce native-like speeches. This study therefore was conducted in order to find out the communicative purposes, the schematic structures, and the linguistic features that characterize the learners’ Analytical Exposition monologues using four students of FBIB University of Stikubank Semarang as the subjects of the study. It was found out that the communicative purposes, the schematic structures, and the linguistics features monologues match those produced by the English native speakers. However, the students make a number of lexicogrammatical errors which can be classified into tense errors, vocabulary errors, and finite errors. Based on the findings in this study, some suggestions are put forward, i.e. (1) the communicative purposes, the schematic structures, the linguistic features of genres in the target language should be taught to the students because they characterize certain genres; (2) the teachers and the students can learn from the errors they make in this study. More practice is thus required on the part of the students. Abstract

New cyber-genres such as emails and web pages have long been generated by the interaction of people through the discourses of business, government, and media. When at the moment schools have access to expertise in the advancement of Information technology, the interaction of schools and the internet is also enhanced. The paradigm creates a new practice in the use of language and literacy. Positive attitude of English teachers, experts in English education and information technology, and the government towards the new paradigm should critically be formulized. Therefore, this paper tries to provide some annotation on how the new literacy practice could be facilitated to students. Key Word: cyber-genres, literacy

Abstract

A study on error in English language use has long been conducted by different researchers and in different settings (Richards 1971; Nemser 1971; Selinker 1972; Brown 1994; Ellis 1995). Different English educational institutions continuously conduct similar studies mainly because they do not only want to identify linguistic problems encountered by their students and to account for their language development but they also want to benefit from the necessary information they may use to better the learning materials (Farooq 1998; Bartlett 2002). In this study the writer investigated grammatical errors as encountered in students’ spoken English. Thirty English students of the Faculty of Language and Cultural Studies Stikubank University were randomly asked to speak about any issue they were interested in. This was recorded and the data were transcribed and categorized under (1) the type of grammatical errors, (2) problem areas, (3) Selinker’s error categories (1972) and (4) semantic impacts. The most problems encountered by the students are as follows: verb phrase (24.6%), syntax (78.7%), transfer of training and strategy of language learning (77.1%) and local semantic impact (92.6%). Key words: grammatical error, error category, problem area, semantic impact

Abstract

There is in the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) a lack of pedagogically appropriate materials for the teaching of reading skills in the field of science and technology, in spite of the abundant number of publications in the English language which should be read by our students in order for the newly developed knowledge to be transferred and or for further studies and application. For teachers of ESP, this phenomenon gives a great challenge to provide a good variety of topics in the area for teaching-learningpurposes. In this paper an attempt is made to make use of the rhetoric aspects of a technological text available. In summary, the conceptual and physical paragraph structure of a text may be utilized for the construction of own-made appropriate and sound teaching materials to meet the need of the students. Key word: EST, rhetoric principles, learner needs, conceptual paragraph, physical paragraph

Abstract

This paper examines some issues with respect to language and cultural breakdowns in the Export-Import Activities. The writer simply outlines possible problems that may be faced by the exporters and importers, especially who operate in Indonesia. This is because Indonesian people, as one of the Asean members, are normally bound to the application of Indonesian culture in dealing with business across the globe. This of course would cause some cultural breakdowns which in turn influence the export-import activities in the form of cultural misunderstanding. Besides, the language (English) used in the Export-Import dealings is somehow different from the English people learn at schools or colleges. In short, this paper is hoped to open up the view of the importance of designing a special training of English for Export-Import business. Key words: Export-Import, cultural breakdowns, English for Export-Import business

Abstract

In the writers’ opinion, there are two types of novel: those which are made for fun and leisure, and those which are compiled to deliver an idea(s). Based on that, the writers think that the novel used in this study, Eragon, is a novel which is such an attractive one to keep up with in addition to the moral values about life intended to deliver. Christopher Paolini, the author, has demonstrated every effort to write such a highly valued novel in the age of fifteen. This paper discusses the symbols in Paolini’s Inheritance: Eragon. There are two main points that this paper attempts to answer: (1) the symbols which are used in this novel and (2) how the theme is reflected by the symbols. Although there are many standpoints to observe in the novel, this paper only focuses on the work itself and the internal characteristics that build the story. Key words: symbol, theme, setting
