Abstract

ABSTRACT Children are very unique. They can learn more than one languages at very young age. They have ability to do it since the brain is very active in absorbing kinds of languages through the work of neuron. It is a sign that young learners can be bilingual or multilingual children. They will learn languages from their milieu and society around them. If they are exposed since they were toddlers, the result will be good as their brain still developed within their golden period. They even can maintain their heritage language with the help of society while they are learning another new language. It helps them to communicate to their peer and adult properly. By participating in social and cultural practice children acquire the linguistic and cognitive orientation of their elders. Children who have the opportunity to learn multiple languages from early childhood and to maintain them throughout their lives are fortunate indeed, and families that can offer this opportunity to their children should be encouraged to do so. Key words: neuron, bilingual, multilingual

Abstract

Literature pleases humans by imitating life, or more precisely, by displaying its writers’ visions of life as it is or as the writers think it should be. The story of Anna and the King focused more on the struggle of a British teacher in Siam, Anna Leonowens, who was demanded to teach the English ways to Siamese Royal children and wives who still held the traditional culture and rules. The reflections of patriarchal thoughts and views hopefully could be seen through the actions and reactions of Anna and Tuptim. Since the setting of the story influenced the story a lot, it was a need to start the analysis from the analysis of the setting. In conclusion, a broad picture on the Siamese patriarchal systems could be revealed. As a country which held traditions and cultures, Siamese people put the positions of men higher than women. Men had higher position which gave them power to oppressed women for their favors. Polygamy was applied here, which supported the patriarchal power in Siam. Key words: setting, patriarchy, feminism

Abstract

This article reports the results of generic analysis on English learners’ narratives. The purposes are to reveal (1) how students use language to achieve communicative purposes, (2) how students organize thoughts into stages, (3) how students realize those thoughts linguistically. The data are obtained by randomly taking ten out of fifty students’ narratives produced when the students joined genre-based writing class in the academic year 2009/2010. The data are analyzed in two integrated parts, i.e. schematic structure analysis and lexicogrammatical analysis. The results show that the linguistic features of the learners’ Narratives are similar with those of the English native speaker’s Narrative, i.e. focus on individualized participants, use of material processes, use of relational (attributive) processes, use of past tense. However, some vocabulary and tense errors are made. Key words: Narrative, schematic structure, linguistic feature, genre, abstract, orientation, complication, evaluation, resolution, coda

Abstract

The study on lexical density (LD) and grammatical intricacy (GI) is aimed at construing: (1) the LD index of the texts of English textbooks for sixth graders; (2) the GI index of the texts of English textbooks for sixth graders; and (3) whether both indices are tolerable. The data of this study are all the texts of the textbooks presumably being used by Semarang sixth graders. The results are: (1) the LD index is 0.54; (2) the GI index is 1.19; and (3) both LD and GI indices are significantly low. Pedagogically, the results imply that the texts may easily be comprehended by Semarang sixth graders, although, some of the reading texts are written in complex sentences. This, somehow, creates a difficulty on the part of the students. However, in order to justify whether a text is really useful, a further researcher could provide information pertaining to the readability and the generic structure potential of the text. Key words: lexical density, grammatical intricacy, content words, running words.

Abstract

Rappaccini’s Daughter is a story which was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in   1844. Its principal setting is a fantastic garden filled with lush vegetation and poisonous flowers, in the center of which is a broken fountain. This story is replete with symbols and symbolic allusions. However, like other literary works, the story has an “empty space”. This paper is intended to invite the readers to one of the possible interpretations of the theme of this particular work of Hawthorne to fill that “empty space”. Man is superior to any other creatures. He has the capacity to learn and to develop himself. But, if “… he cares infinitely more for science than for mankind” and “if the head and heart are separated and the scientific functions alone, what price must the scientist pay?” The answer is the destruction to the life of mankind. Key words: intelligence, greediness, destruction
