Abstract

This paper is intended to reveal political satires in the American media, mainly it reflects in JibJab.com’s animated caricatures on the concentration of Obama’s Presidential Champaign. It is also to discern the deep meaning of the satirical drawing in Obama’s presidential election and to disclose how satire takes a part in Obama’s campaign. Politics, social, and culture are to be prominent disciplines associated with the phenomenon of animated caricatures of Obama’s presidential campaign. There are three functions of satirical drawing in American politics as follows: satirical animated caricature as the symbolic interaction, satirical drawing as the social control, and satirical caricature as the political correctness. Some significant values are also correlated with the political caricatures such as freedom of expression, democratic values, and the equality values. This analysis describes the contribution of the political satires in the time of Obama’s presidential election, used as tools for campaign, and tools to influence the voters. Abstract

This research is about an analysis of linguistic features in the speeches of business community which are about the speech of Indonesian President. It is found out that the themes are expressing the remarkable prospect of strategic partnership between Indonesia and India through bilateral economic cooperation and the feeling of pride of the remarkable progress in Indonesia. There are thirteen and five main sectors that are highlighted in the speeches. The words in general are intended to highlight and show how he felt about Indonesia that can cooperate and set up the World Economic Forum’s third country in business Forum. There were two procedures for analyzing the speech of the Indonesian President speeches. This study analyzes the content and the one of its forms. Firstly, the analysis of content had the objectives of finding the theme and the plot of the speech. The same analysis is also given access to analyze the linguistic features. The finding was also supported and cross checked by the use of the semantic analysis of the keywords of the speech as solid clues for the finding. Secondly, the analysis of the choice of form applies selectively Leech and Short’ framework (1984) in the form of linguistics categories He uses many types of the linguistic features, first, lexical categories in which mostly he uses content words such as noun or noun phrases; verbs in the form of illocutionary acts of commissive, expressive, and assertive that convince his audience and fellow citizens that the condition of Indonesia and India enhance cooperation in Business. Also, it is found the use of attributive and predicative adjectives and adverbs. Secondly, to better activate his audience’s interest more compound and complex sentences are used. It is grammatical categories; in the speech it shows how the use of compound and complex sentences comprise good coherence. Thirdly, the figures of speech used are metaphor, and very few in the forms of personification and anaphora. The uses of figures of speech help unify ideas for the speeches. The forth is cohesive devices; the cohesion in speech is achieved by the use of cohesive devices such as co-reference pronouns, conjunctions and word repetition throughout the speech. Abstract

This study attempts to construe (1) the appraisal devices recognized in the “The Asean Cage” text? (2) how the readers may be positioned in the text. When a categorical technique based on Appraisal theory proposed by Martin and White (2005) was applied, the writers found out that the editorial text displays appraisal devices in different percentages (Affect-Attitude (3.03%), Judgment-Attitude (45.45%) and Appreciation-Attitude (51.52%); Mono-glossic-Engagement (0%), Dialogic Contraction-Engagement (58.3%) and Dialogic Expansion-Engagement (41.7%); Force-Graduation (97.8%) and Focus-Graduation (2.2%). Based on the analysis of Appraisal System, the readers may be positioned as those who accept the editor’s assessment about the condition between Indonesia and ASEAN. Abstract

Indonesian children are born as bilingual even multilingual children because Indonesia is a rich country having many different cultures. As one of cultural products, language can be learnt through various ways, one example is by reading children storybook. Language use is always socially and culturally situated. Learning English is a process of tranforming linguistics entities into knowledge implanted in children’s brain. It is through language that school subjects are taught and through language that students’ understanding of concept is displayed and evaluated in school context. Abstract

This study investigates the ideas organizational patterns  that underlie the writing of English Expository discourses performed  by Indonesians. Organizational pattern constitutes one of the features that contribute to text coherence. The data of the study consist of 6 expository discourses taken from The Jakarta Post. The study is descriptive and qualitative in nature. It describes the observed phenomena in the form of words rather than numbers. The characteristics of the organizational patterns underlying the English expository discourses written by Indonesians are identified and analyzed. The results of the study show that fifty percent of the English Expository Discourses written by Indonesians reflects the linear organizational pattern. Some suggestions that can be put forward are as follows: the linear organizational pattern should become the teaching material of composition subject. The students should be reminded that when writing in English, they should follow English rule including in developing ideas. Comparisons between linear and non linear organizational patterns should be presented to the students to make them aware of the differences. Abstract

Is language natural? We may think of this from the point of view of philosophy of language. Based on the philosophy of language, natural language is similar to ordinary language. Natural language is different from constructed languages and formal languages such as computer-programming languages or the languages used in the study of formal logic, especially mathematical language. We may say that natural language is any languages which arouse in unpremeditated fashion as the result of the innate facility for language possessed by the human intellect. Abstract

Manga is Japanese comic which has been trend in Indonesia recently. This work has its own aesthetics values and they reveal the Japanese philosophy of life. Japanese applies zen budhisme in their life as well as Aoyama Gosho, Detective Conan author (mangaka). Wabi-sabi, the Japanese aesthethic values also teaches us how life goes. It teaches us using imperfectness, incompleteness, and impermanence to make us balance with the natural process. Realism applied by Gosho to depict his characters and it looks so real. Readers seem close to the condition which he describes. Detective story always makes tension for the readers. It also makes this manga interesting to read. Abstract

This study focuses on the analysis of students’ recognition in the differences of contextual content words: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, which data are taken from the work of the second semester students of the FBIB (the Faculty of Language and Cultural Studies) of Unisbank Semarang, in the academic year 2010/2011.  The mothodology used in this study is a descriptive, it  concerns with how what is or what exists is related to some proceedings that have influenced or affected the present condition or event. The findings showed that the students’ recognition in the differences of contextual content words was not sophisticated. The average number of students  who could recognize he content words correctly was 58.42%, and the content word which was mostly recognized incorrectly by he students was the VERB, only 43.85%.
