Abstract

This study aims to clarify the role of making kemplang can help students understand the concept of number patterns, and generate Learning Trajectory. The methodology used in this research is the design of the research by the research subject class IX students of SMP Negeri 2 South Indralaya, Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra. Researchers designing learning activities that sensing, drafting kemplang class simulated using circular paper prepared by the researcher. Exploration proportional situations using everyday life issues are close to students' lives, such as creating kemplang can make students more interested in learning mathematics and easily understand the math problems are given. Collecting data in this study using video, observation, written tests, documentation and records during the activity. The results of this study indicate that context kemplang and paper-making circles as a model really helps students to understand the concept of a pattern of numbers. Keywords: pattern numbers, manufacture Kemplang, PMRI, design research DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.7.2.3535.101-108

Abstract

The first idea that must be understood by the students to learn the concept of concept of conservation of area is recomposing shape. In recomposing shape, the students will see the fact that the shape can be transformed into a different form without adding or losing the part of the shape. So the students could conclude that the area of the shape before and after recomposing remains the same. Therefore, this study will answer how the students understand the initial idea (recomposing shape) of the concept of conservation of area. The instructional activity which was made in this study is based on realistic mathematics education. The activity was created for third grade elementary school students in SD Al-Hikmah Surabaya. The third grade students were used since they have not learned about area measurement. So they could focus just on the shape without disturbance of the area formula. The result of this study suggest that students still need more similar activities to ensure their understanding toward the idea that recomposing shape will preserve the area of the shape. Keywords: concept of conservation of area, initial understanding, recomposing shape

Abstract

Previous research has shown knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes are essential factors during mathematics classroom instruction. The current study examined the effects of a 3-week fraction instructional unit using concrete models, problem-solving, and problem-posing to improve elementary preservice teachers’ knowledge, perceptions and attitudes towards fractions. A quasi-experiment design was implemented to gather data via closed-ended, open-ended, and essay tasks from a convenience sampling of 71 female elementary preservice teachers during pre- and post-assessments. The study discovered that the select preservice teachers were weak in the content knowledge specifically on unit-whole, part-whole, equivalent area, arithmetic operations, and ordering fractional values. In contrast, the incorporation of concrete models, problem-solving and problem-posing was effective in improving the preservice teachers’ level of pedagogical content knowledge, perceptions and attitudes towards fractions. Implications of the results and suggestions are discussed.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how set model can help students' understanding of addition of integers in fourth grade. The study has been carried out to 23 students and a teacher of IVC SD Iba Palembang in January 2015. This study is a design research that also promotes PMRI as the underlying design context and activity. Results showed that the use of set models that is packaged in activity of recording of financial transactions in two color chips and card game can help students to understand the concept of zero pair, addition with the same colored chips, and cancellation strategy.

Abstract

In order to help students develop their critical thinking skills, teachers need to model the critical thinking skills and dispositions in front of their students. Unfortunately, very rare studies investigating prospective teachers’ readiness in critical thinking dispositions are available in the field of mathematics education. This study was intended to investigate the level of critical thinking disposition of prospective mathematics teachers. Using case study methods, three studies were done in Malang.Three levels of critical thinkers were identified from these case studies namely: non-critical thinker, emergent critical thinker, developing critical thinker. Majority of prospective mathematics teachers’ critical thinking dispositions are at the non-critical thinker level. Only a few of them are at the emergent critical thinker, and very rare at the developing critical thinker level. It can be concluded that prospective mathematics teachers are not critical thinker yet. Teacher education institutions need to reform their curriculum and instructional practices to improve their students critical thinking skills and dispositions.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.8.2.3961.145-156

Abstract

This research is aimed to determine the role of Indonesian folklore context namely the Legend of Kemaro Island in supporting average learning on 6-grade students with Pendidikan Matematika RealistikIndonesia (PMRI) approach. The method used is design research that contains three stages namely preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. Results from the research show that Indonesian folklore context can support students to develop their knowledge in the concept of average. Strategy and model (emergent modeling) that students discover, describe and discuss the construction or contribution shows how students can use to help their initial understanding of the concept of average.

Abstract

Mathematics is the foundation of all sciences, but most students have problems learning math. Although students’ success in life related to their success in learning, many would not take a math course unless it is their university’s core requirements. Multiple reasons exist for students’ poor performance in mathematics, but one prevalent variable worth consideration is the personality type. This work seeks to uncover relationships, if any, between students’ math anxiety and the students’ learning type in learning math and preparing for exams and tests. We use Bayesian networks to link those different variables and detect possible relationships among these variables. The data was obtained from population of 468 students during spring in 2009 at a U.S. institution in Jordan. Not many researches have been performed in the area of math study and personality types so we undertook this study to add to this area of knowledge. The study reveals that math anxiety related to gender, personality type, and study habits among this group of university students. Abstract

Attention to integrate technology in teaching and learning has provided a major transformation in the landscape of education. Therefore, many innovations in teaching and learning have been technology-driven. The study attempted to examine what is engineering students’ perception regarding the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in mathematics learning as well as investigate their opinion about how ICT can be integrated to improve teaching and learning processes. The subjects were Iranian engineering students from two universities. The finding showed they are fully aware of importance of ICT in teaching and learning mathematics. Whilst, they were feeling comfortable and confident with technology, they do not have more experience of using technology in mathematics classes before. The findings supported the other studies, which indicated the potentials of ICT to facilitate students’ learning, improve teaching, and enhance institutional administration as established in the literature. Keywords: Technology, Mathematics Learning, Facebook, Attitude Toward ICT DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.5.2.1498.138-147

Abstract

This paper is the result of first phase of the research about the development of students’ mathematical understanding and representation ability through Joyful Problem-based Learning (JPBL) at Public Junior High School in North Sumatera, Indonesia. The population is all of the students of public junior high school (PJHS) in North Sumatera. Samples choose based on stratified random sampling. The samples are the students of PJHS 27 Medan, PJHS 1 Percut Sei Tuan, PJHS 1 Tebing Tinggi, and PJHS 2 Pematangsiantar. The techniques used for collecting data is observation, interview, and essay test. The research findings: (1) Based on interview and observation found that conventional approach still use in all of the class of PJHS; The students engagement in learning activity is very low as well as students self-regulated learning; Most of the students do not attain minimal mastery achievement, (2) Based on essay test found that achievement of the students in mathematical understanding and representation test is categories low. Keywords: mathematical understanding, mathematical representation, joyful problem-based learning DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.7.1.2816.43-56

Abstract

Several studies on learning mathematics for rural area's student indicate that students have difficulty in understanding the concept of division operation. Students are more likely to be introduced by the use of the formula without involving the concept itself and learning division separate the concrete situation of learning process. This underlies the researcher to design division operation learning in the Mathematics of GASING (Math GASING), which always starts from concrete to abstract level. The research method used is a design research which describes how the Math GASING make a real contribution of students understanding in the concept of division operation.
