Abstract

The three aims of this study are to determine (1) the reading proficiency and the motivation level of a group of tertiary level learners, (2) how far paraphrasing as a strategy can help in developing the reading comprehension of the learners, and (3) whether this strategy also motivates the learners to read more. This study employed a quasi-experimental design. The research population comprised all 18 students in the third semester of the MA in ELT (English Language Teaching) programme of Gauhati University. The data were collected by using (1) two types of tests to measure abilities in literal and inferential comprehension, (2) paraphrasing as technique for reading and (3) questionnaires. The results showed that there was a greater engagement with the text and higher levels of motivation while using the paraphrasing strategy. However, more research needs to be carried out to obtain conclusive evidence that the reading comprehension of students can be developed substantially with the use of the paraphrasing strategy.

Abstract

Man’s perceptions or worldviews about reality are conditioned and shaped by the language in which they are expressed. Thus, our knowledge of morality is expressed in the language we use. This paper examines the interrelatedness of language and morality using the matrix of Gabriel Okara’s The Voice. It explores the relationship between language and morality, and how they feature in the actual state of affairs. It utilizes the method of textual analysis and hermeneutic phenomenology in carrying out the research. It concludes that language and morality are inseparably bound together. It recommends a reappraisal of Okara's conception of language and morality within the framework of African ethics.

Abstract

The dimensions of strategic and systematic silencing in America have ramifications for the economic survival of African Americans. The motif of devocalization has been creatively engaged in Toni Morrison’s Home and God Help the Child (2015). Through experimentation with language, Morrison has mobilized her linguistic genius towards the exploration of the themes of mobility, devocalization, commodification, and convolution of other themes. Through this, Morrison once again establishes the intricate connection between her language and her artistic vision, vis-à-vis her commitment to the African American cause. A psychoanalytic evaluation of her themes of strategic economic silencing, poverty, and systematic devocalization, validates Freud’s pleasure vs reality principle, unearthing her characters’ emotional imbalances and how they channel the untapped desires for pleasure towards a productive end in the face of their harrowing realities. New historicism helps the paper to situate the collective complex of the African American community within the different historical periods, espousing the different discourses and how they inform and are informed by the emotional climate of the times.

Abstract

Instructional supervision is deemed effective way to support professional growth and competency and has been identified as an integral component of staff development while Professional Learning Communities (PLC) is believed to be a more effective way of continuing professional growth and development among its staff focused on the academic performance of learners. This study was based on determining the instructional supervision practices based on its four (4) dimensions, the professional learning communities practices based on five (5) dimensions and the school performance based on the quality parameter of School-Based Management (SBM) of the twenty-two (22) central schools of the Eastern Samar Division. Results revealed that the instructional supervision practices are perceived by the principals and the teachers to be “highly practiced.” Professional learning communities’ practices are likewise perceived by both respondents to be “very highly practiced.” Test on significant difference indicated that there is no significant difference in both the instructional supervision practices and professional learning communities’ practices as perceived by the elementary school principals and their respective teachers. Generally, none of the schools investigated have satisfied and surpassed the quality standards for school –based management as only more than one-half of the school population investigated fall under “moving towards mastery” level.
