Abstract

Nigerian society still abounds with antiquated and anti-humanist beliefs that portray women as a weaker group and relegate them to inferior positions without regard to their mental capacity and educational competencies. Evidently, Nigerian women are not only increasingly marginalised from advancing in their career lives, but recent studies have shown that they are also excluded from having a political and economic career, which has significant importance to their economic advancement and sustainability, with the sole notion that the women are incapable of initiating any meaningful development. Although there are no constitutional barriers to women's increased participation in social, political, and economic advancement, there are societal and cultural barriers that stymie women's political and economic advancement. Some of these barriers include, but are not limited to, traditions, religious practice, work-life imbalance, and discriminatory organisational structures, among others. The paper employs both secondary and tertiary sources of data and adopts the historical research method in assembling and interrogating the data sourced for this research. The study argued that despite the general antiquated and anti-humanist belief that women are incapable of initiating any meaningful development in Nigerian society, findings from this study indicate that few Nigerian women have distinguished themselves both nationally and internationally, and one of such individuals is Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, who has not only broken barriers of male chauvinism in the global landscape but has also redefined the status quo of women.

Abstract

The paper titled gender and environmental preservation explores the nature of gender in relationship with the environment using the Yakur society in Cross River State, Nigeria as a case study, African societies generally see the world to a greater extent as a man’s world in the sense that the land and everything within the environment is owned and controlled by men. However the research discovered that women give greater priority to protection of and improving the capacity of nature by maintaining the economic/agricultural environment, political environment, spiritual environment, domestic environment and the social environment respectively. Women play critical roles in managing natural resources and the family. Secondly the paper discussed the nature of gender inequality in Yakurr societies and its impact on women. The paper adopted the historical and phenomenological methods of data collection. The qualitative method was used to analyze the data collected. The paper calls for an equal distribution of resources irrespective of gender or sex.

Abstract

The law draws a distinction between the functions of a receiver and a manager. A receiver has the duty to stop the business, collect the debts and realize the assets. He has no authority to carry on a going concern. Nevertheless, a manager, on the other hand, has powers to continue a business or any going concern. Thus, the primary motive for the appointment of the receiver/manager is that of the realization and preservation of the company’s security of those on whose behalf he is appointed. The actual role of a receiver is that of an agent. He as an agent is personally liable on any contract entered into by him in the performance of his functions except where the contract provides otherwise. As an agent, the primary duties of the receiver involve good faith, special confidence, and candour towards another. Basically, the duties of a receiver are those which can justifiably be said to be incidental to his powers of management. The paramount duty of the receiver on his appointment is to take possession of all the assets covered by the charge, since those are the things he is appointed to manage with a view to recovering what may be due to the debenture holders or mortgagees.

Abstract

“War” and “peace” are perhaps the most speculative bipolar notions in human history. Since the dawn of human civilization, “Mother Earth” has faced constant conflict between war and peace. Theoretical analysis of the ideas of “war” and “peace” has been undertaken by intellectuals and philosophers from the dawn of time in an attempt to resolve this tension. In this work, it is discovered that Immanuel Kant made a genuine effort to establish the causes of and justification for war. An esoteric examination of Kantian Practical Philosophy indicates that Kant offers a novel type of “Just War Theory.” In the meantime, Kant seeks adequate solutions to the question, “What actions should be adopted after war?” How do we eliminate the likelihood of future wars? How may we achieve an everlasting state of peace? In this paper, we will examine Kant's perspectives on these questions. This work investigates further to determine if “just war theory” and “determining the methods for eternal peace” are incompatible. This work is separated into four portions. In the first part, we shall examine just war theory and its underlying ideas. In the second part, we shall examine Kant as an opponent of just war theory. In the third part, we portray Kant as a just war theorist, while section four examined the consistency between just war theory and Kant's concept of perpetual peace.

Abstract

In traditional Western philosophy, it was widely accepted that emotions could be an obstacle to human rationality when it comes to attempting to gain objective knowledge and truth. One way of understanding emotions is that they may accidentally happen to us; they are a purely non-volitional form of a mental phenomenon. There is the question of whether the study of emotions needs to rely on scientific methods at all. Can emotions be investigated merely through conceptual analysis and introspection? Are emotions only accessed, felt, and even understood from the first-person perspective? If the answer is positive, it indicates that we should have to refute pieces of subpersonal empirical evidence regarding the neurophysiological activities of emotions. This paper concerns the philosophical debate on emotion. I argue that in the history of the philosophy of emotion, the competing theories place themselves either on "cognitive" or "bodily" grounds; both are responsible for the mind-body dichotomy and have their difficulties. The former is what I call the "Orthodox Feeling Theory," which cannot account for the structure of intentionality or the evaluative property of emotions; the latter is the "Strong Cognitive Theory," which ignores the role of the bodily and experiential aspects. Such standard theories are out of date.

Abstract

The evolution of Nigeria's environmental legal system is examined in this article. Like many other developing countries, Nigeria has had difficulty finding a balance between the expansion of its economy and the protection of its natural resources. Serious environmental problems, including the contaminating of groundwater in Lagos, the largest megacity in the nation, and the degradation of the marine environment in the Niger Delta by crude oil, reflect this dualism. The country's preoccupation with economic growth may be seen in the slow establishment of legal safeguards for natural resources, which has led to a despicable disrespect for the environment. This article claims that little progress has been achieved despite a growing knowledge of the need to safeguard natural resources. The significant and continued pollution of essential natural resources highlights this little progress. According to the inquiry, the administration that built these facilities is also one of the main offenders of environmental standards and laws. This often causes a system failure atmosphere in which nothing works and the environment suffers. Enforcing environmental standards has benefits such as increased employment opportunities, environmental protection, and environmental sustainability. Outdated laws, expensive environmental standards, weak institutional capacity, poor governance, understaffing, inadequate funding, vested interests, overlapping or conflicting legislation, ignorance, and a lack of the rule of law are a few of the challenges to effective compliance with environmental regulations.

Abstract

The discussion regarding non-anthropocentrism as the most amicable solution to the current environmental crisis will be incomplete if scholars fail to include the issue of restoring man’s lost spirituality. Due to the dominance of the concept of man’s conquest of nature (anthropocentrism), which has led to an unprecedented rate of scientific and technological development in an attempt to artificialize the natural environment, the spiritual connection between man and nature has been severed. Modern quantitative science’s lack of a metaphysical foundation is said to destroy the spiritual connection between man and nature. This paradoxical situation necessitates the revival of eco-spirituality, which echoes ancient religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and others. The goal of this paper is to investigate a second-order method of combating environmental degradation. This “second order” within the preview of eco-spirituality and non-anthropocentricism includes ancient religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity, and Islam. Further, the “second order,” under the label of “anthropocentrism,” is opposed to scientism, materialism, individualism, and extinctionism. This work submits that the universal acceptance of the holistic worldview reflected in the ancient religions listed above will aid in the creation of a society free from man’s dominance and exploitation, allowing him to live in peace and harmony with nature. Individuals’ inner minds must be developed in order to effect a change in their attitude toward nature. This requires the cultivation of the ideas inherent in religions. This research is carried out with the philosophical methods of critical and context analysis.

Abstract

In the changing global scenario, the main aim of education is to help people develop themselves as global and local responsible citizens who will make conscientious efforts for building a humane world with peace and harmony. The focus of education should be the development of values of peace and harmony based on the human mindset: human rights, mutual respect, mutual trust, cooperation, respect for life, social justice, open-mindedness, and co-existence. Keeping this in mind, it is necessary to reorient and restructure the education programme to include education for peace and harmony. The essence of this work is to expose the Gandhian school of educational thought. This work argues that trusteeship is a unique socio-economic doctrine of Gandhi; however, it has not received the serious attention of social scientists. This study examines trusteeship from a holistic perspective, which is an approach favoured by Gandhi. It highlights the theoretical and practical aspects of trusteeship and examines its present-day relevance.

Abstract

This study compared the effects of circuit weight training and interval weight training programmes on jumpers’ health and fitness-related components. The health-related physical fitness components are body composition, cardiovascular endurance fitness, flexibility, and muscular endurance as well as muscular strength. The age of the jumpers ranged from 18 to 21 years, with a mean of 17.9 years. A ten-week training and interval weight training programme was conducted on jumpers that were randomly selected into two experimental groups and a control group. The Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) served as the inferential statistics that the study utilised, while the Tukey Pairwise Comparison Test served as the post hoc analysis. The findings of the study revealed that the two training programmes elicited significant changes, but their training effects were not significantly different compared to the health-related physical fitness component of jumpers. It is therefore recommended that both training programmes be utilised by trainers and coaches for conditioning and enhancing the health-related physical fitness components of jumpers for high performance.

Abstract

The study investigated factors influencing arms proliferation and rural development in the Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria. The study was guided by two research questions, and a cross-sectional survey research design will be used to examine arms proliferation and criminality in Benue State. Area of the Study Katsina-Ala Local Government while the sample size for the study was 400, the research makes use of cluster and random sampling techniques to select the population of the study. By simple random sampling, the names of the ten (12) council wards were written on pieces of paper, wrapped, and dropped into a container and shaken thoroughly. Thereafter, five (6) council wards out of the original ten (12) wards were randomly selected. The data collected through the questionnaire was analysed using frequency counts and percentages. From the findings, it was concluded from the research findings that even though arms proliferation is caused by so many factors, profitability and utilisation of small arms have been singled out as the major cause of the unrest in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
