Abstract

Science and technology development causes a lot of changes in any fields including the form of popular games among the Junior and Senior High School students in Indonesia. The traditional games that are famous formerly have been replaced by the modern games like online video game. This article discusses the cause and effect of the online video game playing on the Junior and Senior High Schools students in Malang. This study reveal that students play video games online due to peers pressure; and  online video games are  liked because they are considered more modern, practical, realistic and varied. Initially,  students play online video games to relieve the fatigue due to studying at school, but subsequently, they are becoming addicted, and reach a condition that they find it  difficult to stop playing games. This condition will directly affect their achievement in school.

Abstract

This article discusses the interaction patterns in inter-ethnic life that inhabit Karimunjawa which is known to be very heterogeneous. Heterogeneity of Karimunjawa is not only seen in terms of the origin of the migrants, but also language and religion. There are nine ethnics, but three main ethnic inhabit Karimunjawa are Javanese, Madurese and Buginese. Each develops different interaction patterns according to their ethnics. Nonetheless, the social values shared make Karimunjawa communities can live in harmony. They are affected by their perspectives on the sea as a common property right that can be used together regardless of the ethnic background and origin. Therefore, the pattern of harmonious interactions tolerates each other in equal style characterizing the community in Karimunjawa.

Abstract

This article aims at analyzing the political base in the case of Indonesian middle class. It is essential to note that many multi-interpretation understandings to define terminology of Indonesian middle class. The definition of Indonesian middle class still undermines as “middle group” which is related to new rich people. Based on comparative analyzes, the emergence of Indonesia middle class have been separated with western middle class. In western case, middle class has possessed stable economic and politics material sources independently toward the state. The situation is what transforms the middle class as presser to the states and interest group. It can be said that both processes of the deepening of democratization and economic strength have been encouraged by middle class. In the Indonesian experience, it has been shown that Indonesian middle class keep up mutual relationship to the state. In other words, Indonesian middle class have entered elite power structure. However, in the current time, Indonesian middle class in post-reformation era shows the emergence of political awareness to guard democracy justly. This article will elaborate deeply political basis of Indonesian middle class.

Abstract

This article is the result of qualitative research with critical paradigm on two issues, the meaning of tri datu bracelet talisman as well as commodities and reasons of its use. Informants were set purposively, i.e. tri datu bracelet talisman makers, sellers, users, and religious leaders. Data collection techniques were interview, observation and document study. The data analysis followed the steps of conceptualization, the results of conceptualization, verification, and objectivation. The results show that the commodification of tri datu bracelet talisman created commodity or popular tri datu bracelet talisman refers to its position as an artifact for the fulfillment of human basic needs on security. This situation raises the creative industries of tri datu bracelet talisman. The use of this talisman is associated with the meaning of tri datu = Tri Murti = Tri Sakti = Om = Ganesha and reinforced by Pancadewata = kepeng (ancient coin). Therefore, its magical power becomes a supreme power in order to overcome danger from niskala (bhuta Kala and black magic). The joy of wearing this talisman is not only because it is easy to buy, but also because the Balinese still believe in its magical power. More importantly, Tri datu bracelet is also the identity of Balinese ethnic as the identity of hope and resistance in the context of Ajeg Bali movement.

Abstract

The research concerned here was to know the economic rationality of residents who dwelled again in their former village after the eruption of Mount Merapi in 2010 and refused to be relocated by the government. A combined research method, namely, a combination between a qualitative method and a quantitative one, was used to uncover the rationality. The qualitative part of the research was conducted first by deciding informants considered knowledgeable about the matter under research. Then the informants were interviewed in turns decided via snowball sampling. Some secondary data were used to support the qualitative research. As for the quantitative part of the research, it was conducted afterwards by turning members of the households in the village into respondents. The finding of the research is as follows. The residents perceive the disaster not only as a dangerous natural phenomenon but also as an economic blessing because tourists’ visits to the areas suffering from the impact of the disaster enable residents to have activities that have economic value. That economic rationality was what motivated them to return to their village though its condition is categorized by the government as unfit for dwelling.

Abstract

Uniform is a brand of identity. STTKD is a semi military aviation college which has a unique interaction as habitus among them and academic staff. This study examines of STTKD’s cadets experiences by exploring how his uniform become his habitus and influenced his social and academic integration into higher education. This research found that by using Uniform, cadets provides professional and discipline, and to be a responsible individual who will demand of themselves, high standards of achievement. There are some unique interaction and habitus that found in this research, like: ‘morning sen’ as daily interaction between cadet and even academic staff, morning parade, and sweeping that every junior need to attend. Of all these interactions make cadets respect others.

Abstract

This paper investigates the notion ageing femininity as it is performed within the frame of celebrity culture which privileges youthfulness in beauty and body image. It focuses on the issues of age, the process of ageing, the significance of ageing, the impact of ageing as part of the construction of celebrity identity and femininity. Age[ing] is an important context that female celebrities need to negotiate and embrace the ways in which cultural values need to be considered as well. Looking into the portrayal of the auto/biographical subjects and the visual images used, the paper argues that celebrities negotiate, transform and extend their forms of femininity as they age. Both auto/biographies present their auto/biographical subjects to show the construction of appealing ageing celebrity femininities that are closely linked to the characteristics of the Third Agers, being fit, fashionable, functional and flexible.

Abstract

This article seeks to discuss the strategies of negotiation of Javanese ethnic identity in families among Javanese migrants in Lampung. The study found that there are three ways where the adolescents of Javanese migrants negotiate their ethnic identity. First, the adolescent states Javanese ethnic identity as a positive identity safely at family interaction. Second,they state Javanese ethnic identity as a single identity negatively in an unsafe situation. This happens when the adolescent avoid another ethnic identity that directed to them based on labeling in the family. Third, the adolescent choose one of two ethnic identities in a positive way. It’s referring to parent’s ethnic identity differences. Further, they use Javanese and non Javanese language at their family interaction as a basis for selecting ethnic identity.

Abstract

Timorese people have made gender segregation for several things such as; sex, traditional house and job. Timorese women are identical to round houses (ume kbubu), where inside the house, the women spend their time and activities. Timorese women play an important role in ume kbubu, one of which is the management of food. The purpose of this research is to investigate the role of Timorese women in food management. This research was conducted in Binaus Village, Molo Tengah District, South Central Timor Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province. This research employed qualitative descriptive method from observation and interview. Timorese entitlement receives rights and responsibilities related to food management. They will arrange all streams of incoming and outgoing food. The conclusion of this research is that Timorese women have full control over family food management.
