Abstract

Critical thinking is important in university because students can have some benefits e.g. (1) achieving better marks; (2) reducing their dependency on teachers and text books; and (3) creating their knowledge. Therefore, students are supposed to be able to apply critical thinking skills to all their academic reading, writing, listening and discussing. Book Report and Review is one of the subjects taught in English Department of Unnes. Writing book reviews is not only informational, but also analytic and persuasive. In doing it, consequently, students are required to have critical thinking skills in analysing the content, format, argument, and context to argue that the book is worth reading or not. In order to display critical thinking, they need to develop skills in interpreting, analysing, reasoning, and evaluating. This presentation will focus on how to develop teaching strategies that can foster students' critical thinking in writing book reviews. It will discuss the concept of critical thinking for undergraduate students, its implementation in teaching writing book reviews, and its assessment in students' book review writing texts.

Abstract

Academic literacy has long been discussed throughout the scientific disciplines. Such discussions have partly resulted in a sort of awareness in people’s mind concerning how we implement it in the areas of scientific disciplines we deal with. In the translation domain, we question how much the significance of such stuff is for the benefit of comprehensively analyzing text for inter-language rendering. This paper intends to provide an answer to such question. It deals with the use of relevant literacy to analyze any source text as a basis to produce a target text through transfer of meaning and reconstruction of language fulfilling the aspects of readability, accuracy, and naturalness.

There is development of the use of apology strategies from the lowest to the highest semester students. Abstract

Abstract is an important part of scientific work for both seminar presentation  and journal publication in national or international level.  Every writer is obliged to write an abstract for his/her publication.  The aim of this study was to examine a number of abstracts in English scientific papers by non-native speakers (Indonesian lecturers).  The study was focused on the linguistic and organizational features (i.e. tense shift and rhetorical function). The research results show that a number of abstracts in the data do not conform to the principles of abstract writing, that is some abstracts do not contain complete moves. In addition, the rhetorical shift is not always followed by the tense shift.   Key words: abstract, tense shift, rhetorical function, move analysis

Abstract

In times of today’s changing global world, each of us needs to have a kind of steel armor to shield us from any threatening and daunting global impacts. Yet, we cannot just sit still or stay indolently to let any hazards take over or disrupt the living concordance and convenience. In case of environmental issues for instance, problems such as deforestation, pollution, global warming still become prevalent issues that people are coping up with. Literature as one social and cultural product should play roles in evoking people’s understanding about the importance of conserving and preserving our environment. It is through ecocriticism or a criticism that harmonizes ecology and literary criticism that literature can participate in disseminating the values of green living. Poetry is one of literary genres that best describes one’s vision of environment; contemporary British poetry is another example of the work that remarkably captures the sight and vision of the poets about problems related to the conservation of wildlife in their respective habitats.

Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out how meanings are realized in the election campaigns in the contemporary Indonesia and what role language takes in exercising power? The close-up linguistic analysis of three different texts has illustrated that the texts are rich in meanings: they make not just meanings about what goes on and why, but also meanings about relationship and attitudes, and meanings about distance and proximity. By relating specific linguistic choices to the construction and reflection of situational, cultural and ideological contexts, these three different texts have been shown to in fact encode meanings about such far reaching dimensions as: ways of talking to your die-hard fans, the experience of politicians, the responsibility of a statesman and expected behavior of a “good” leader. Meanings of the political campaigns in contemporary Indonesia are explicitly realized in a subtle ways. The exercise of power is achieved through ideological workings of language. Public space serves a rhetorical means. Competing figures establish their voices by constructing counter-narratives in public space.   Key words: meanings, election campaign, cultural context, ideological context, public space, rhetorical means, counter narratives.

Abstract

Students often had problems to describe someone in English. The basic problem is the lack of practice. The students needed sufficient, fun and easy practice which would make them enthusiastic to do it. Therefore, I proposed the use of contextualized card game to improve the students’ speaking practice in describing people. I used classroom-action research to investigate how the use of contextualized card game can improve the students’ speaking practice in describing people. By implementing the game, the frequency of the students to describe people increased in cycle 2, ranging from 6.3 % up to 87.5 % compared to one in cycle 1. The students felt fun, enthusiastic, and confident as they were practicing speaking in groups while playing game and the object of description was within their knowledge. Besides, they described people better than before because in playing the game they learned from their friends and the teacher had facilitated them with sufficient and step-by step exercises. Further, the average score of the test improved from 74 in pre-cycle to 79 in cycle 1 and 83 in cycle 2. Thus, the use of contextualized card game can improve the students’ speaking practice.
