Abstract

The article reports an investigation on the differences between the schematic structure of English and Indonesian research article introduction. By selecting thirty research articles from each group and analysing them using the CARS model (1990, 2004), this study has unravelled several differences. At the macro level, the English articles respectively have a higher percentage of reviewing items of previous research, indicating gap, and summarising methods. While their Indonesian counterparts tend to have a greater deal with making topic generalisations, presenting positive justifications, and stating the value of the present research. In addition, while the Indonesian articles have more unidentified schematic elements and lack outlining the structure of paper, the English ones demonstrate a higher degree of move reiteration. At the micro level, the English articles are characterised by the use personal deixes as self-mention, and more variation of linguistic clues in claiming centrality. On the other hand, their Indonesian counterparts are depicted by the absence of self-mention, the use of code mixing, and a major tendency in using amplifiers and evaluative adjectives in claiming centrality. These differences might be partially influenced by the writers’ culture, knowledge, editorial policy, social environment, and in certain cases, the technical problems.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether or not the combination of discussion and discovery technique gives better effect to the students' vocabulary mastery than that of vocabulary-drill discussion technique. Based on review of related theories, the proposed hypothesis of this research is as follows: The use of discovery-discussion technique gives a positive and significant effect in improving intermediate-two level students' vocabulary mastery better than that of vocabulary-drill discussion one. The population of this research is all intermediate-two level students of Conversation Program at Global Lingua English course Tegal. For the purpose of this research, I randomly took eighteen out of fifty-five students as the research sample which were then grouped into two groups (with equal number of students in each group), the experimental group and the control group. I used vocabulary tests in the form of multiple choice with four options as the research instrument. The analysis of the data is done using t-test. And from the computation using SPSS, it shows that the result of t-test is 2.645 while t-table with degree of freedom (d.f) is 16 in the level of significance of 5% is 1.745.  Thus, Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected because t-ratio is higher than t-table ( 2.645 < 1.745). Based on the result of the above analysis, it can be inferred that the discovery-discussion technique does give better and more significant effect than the vocabulary-drill discussion one in improving intermediate – two students’ vocabulary mastery in a conversation class.   Key Words: Intermediate-two level, vocabulary mastery, Discovery-Discussion combination technique, conversation class

The participants are students of XII grade of SMK NU Ungaran that are randomly chosen. The result of this study showed that Out of 50 students, 59% of them are best cope with editing task, followed by 56% in dealing with reading comprehension task, 50% of gap-filling task, 48% with short answer task and the least is 22% in vocabulary task. This meant that the proficiency level of reading comprehension of students in XII grade SMK NU Ungaran still needs to elevate. Abstract

This study is aimed to describe myths which appear in Edgar Allan Poe‘s ―The Raven‖ and to figure out the way that is used by Edgar Allan Poe to show the myths in the poem and convey the meaning of the poem itself. Archetype theory from Canadian critic Northrop Frye is used in this study in order to analyze the myths in ―The Raven‖ poem. Furthermore, to clarify the myths in the poem itself, this study uses a qualitative research as a method to collect, select, code, and analyze the data. In the research finding ―The Raven‖ poem by Edgar Allan Poe contains three types of archetype imagery, they are apocalyptic, demonic, and analogical imagery (analogy of innocence and analogy of experience). This poem also contains the four types of cyclical symbolism of archetype, they are divine world, human world, animal world, and mineral world. It is also found that this poem has a structure of sparagmos due to the dark myth and the confusion world that cover the theme of poem. Finally, this poem is divided into six phases of winter which is related to the literary genre of irony and satire that explain more about the sorrowfulness of the author, Edgar Allan Poe because his lover, Lenore leaves him.

Multimedia material is one type of media that can be used as the solution to improve the student motivations in doing tasks in the worksheet. This study is a Research and Development of designing an E-Worksheet which is based on multimedia technology and internet network. There are seven stages to develop this E-Worksheet. They are Need Analysis, Product Design, Expert and Teacher Validation, First Product Revision, Field Test, Second Product Revision and Final Product. This study aims at developing interactive multimedia e–worksheet for the fourth graders of elementary school. It was tried out to the students and the results the students’ interest, motivation, and concentration in learning English, by using the Interactive Multimedia E-Worksheet was high. The level of difficulty of the E-Worksheet was well. The students’ activeness was very high. From these findings, it is suggested that English teachers need to learn how to design and develop multimedia material by using various computer programs. For Students, they should be control in utilizing computer and internet.

Abstract

Patriarchy places Mur, the main character in NH Dini’ s novel entitled “Bandungan Street”, as the secondary citizen, since its orientation is men. This condition impedes her to reach Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The apathy and sadness come since those needs cannot be met. It prompted her to be powerless. Then, she uses the ‘Will to Power” proposed by Nietzsche as to control the undesired condition to empower herself. At last, she can achieve self-actualization, to be the best she can be, as the highest need’s rank. It proves that women can even be the better species if they are also given the same opportunity.   Key words: patriarchy, will to power, self-actualization.

Abstract

Foreign language learning with local culture contents began from the importance of the representation of the roots of the nation in foreign language. Foreign language learning strategies which mediate local cultures and cultural values existed in a foreign language generate a global perspective on foreign cultures, not only on the articulation of local messages to foreign languages, but also it compares how the local values are relevant to the values of other nations. Eventually, learners realize that by understanding themselves, they will be able to appreciate the wisdom of other nations. French culture which was compared to Javanese cultures in this article proved the statement above.
