THE EVALUATION OF THE PRESENT FRENCH TEXTBOOK USED IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS IN SEMARANG AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

Abstract

School Based Curriculum (SBC) as one of the decentralization in education authorizesteachers to develop their own teaching materials. The fact shows that the teacher is stillminimal in writing, including writing textbooks. To facilitate French teachers in writing a Frenchtextbook, a guideline is needed. In Exploration Phase of Research and Development , one ofthe objectives is to find out the quality of French textbook used today. Knowing its strengthsand weaknesses is useful because the information can be used as data for developing aguideline for writing a better French textbook. To collect the data, the methods used were(1) Document Analysis, (2) In-depth interviews, (3) Questionnaires, and (4) Focus GroupDiscussion. To analyze the data, the Constant Comparative Method was utilized. For thetrustworthiness of the data, Triangulation, Member-checking were applied. By using theFrench textbook evaluation instrument set by BSNP and equipped with Cunningsworthcriteria, the six volumes of Bonjour Chers Amis were evaluated. There are four components tobe evaluated: Feasibility of Contents, Feasibility of Presentation, Feasibility of Language, andPractical considerations. The findings reveal that the criteria of French textbook evaluation ofBSNP has not been implemented optimally. These findings provide the information of thequality of the French textbook currently used in Semarang and its surroundings. Theinformation can be used as an overview what things are to be followed and avoided indeveloping a guideline for writing a French textbook integrating SBC and CEFRL.

Abstract

This paper explores Tsitsi Dangarembga’s debut novel, Nervous Conditions, from a political perspective. It has been read as portraying of gender relationships, social hierarchies and oppression of African women. This paper takes a different route as it analyses the role of masculinities through a political perspective. The conflict and struggle between genders in the text can be read through a political and historical perspective. This particular reading is permitted through a close analysis of the male characters in the novel. The research argues that male characters resemble or behave in away similar to white colonizers in their treatment of African women. Reading the novel through a political perspective provides the reader with the benefit of understanding the changes that occur in the characters and the role of gender conflict in the text. The triumph of Tambu and Nyasha at the end underscores the failure of colonial power to colonize Zimbabwe.

Abstract

Academic writing class in any Indonesian university context plays an important role for the students to cope with written academic assignments. This paper explores the perceptions of university students regarding their academic writing class. The participants were students of a private university in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. They were selected based on their achievements in the class and their genders. The data collection made use of interviews which were conducted immediately after the completion of the class.  Individual interviews were conducted with six participants with three of them were male and the other three were female who were mainly regarded as medium achievers. The interview sessions were audio taped. The data then transcribed and analysed thematically. The discussion of the findings showed that the students gained benefits from the class through the applications of genre-based approach teaching stages, explicit teaching, and group work, which enabled the lecturer to develop the students' academic writing, critical thinking, and characters. Still, several limitations were also identified. Suggestions were offered by the participants for the betterment of the academic writing class.

Abstract

This classroom action reserach aimed at applying the Cooperative Learning techniques, particularly the Jigsaw and Think-Pair-Share techniques, to help students improve their Indonesian-English translation skill, especially in terms of diction, grammar, and rendering of message/content of the text. The research was done in one ‘Translation 2” class of the English Literature Program, the English Department of UNNES. This research showed positive results, revealing that the application of Cooperative Learning techniques could improve students’ skill in translating, particularly in terms of diction, grammar, and rendering of message/content of the text. This was seen from the results of evaluation of the process and products during the research period. With the application of Cooperative Learning techniques, the evaluation of translation products showed significant improvement in students’ translation, particularly in terms of diction, grammar, and rendering of message/content of the text. The results of observation and questionnaire also showed that in general students were more active, motivated, enthusiatic, interested, and they gained better understanding of translation techniques. The students admitted that with Cooperative Learning techniques they could learn easily as they got inputs from their teammates, and they became aware of their mistakes. In addition, with group works they could get varied translations.

Abstract

Tourism is believed as the primary motivation to improve the economy of a country. In order to attract some tourists to visit tourism destinations in Indonesia, The Ministry of Tourism establishes an official website to share the information regarding the tourism destinations, activities, and attractions. This study is conducted to observe how the official website of Indonesian tourism utilizes modality to present Indonesian tourism discourse. This paper analysed ten destination highlights of the website covering the areas of Medan, Raja Ampat, Bali, Banyuwangi, Bintan Island, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Makassar, and Lombok through Discourse Analysis approach utilizing Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics. This paper found modality is used in the forms of probability, usuality, inclination, and obligation. Those different types of modality are employed to describe three domains of tourism discourse: itineraries and access, place to play, and authenticity. It is concluded that the government uses the website to ensure the readers’ being well informed of Indonesian tourism destinations and safety during their visit to Indonesia.

Abstract

There are certain concerns that a teacher needs to observe in assessing students oralperformance, such as the amount of words, the grammatical errors, the hesitation and certain expression. This paper attempts to give overview of research results using qualitative method which show the impacts of self repair typeanalysis as development- oriented self-assessment in oral performance. The subject was the tertiary level learners of English Department, Universitas Negeri Semarang, Indonesia in 2016. They performed the speaking tasks oraly in Speaking For General Purposes class. They were given the modified rubric of oral performance including the aspects of self-repairs and asked to evaluate their own performance (selfassessment). They were introduced by the term of self-repairs in simple manner and they were instructed to give self and other repairs whenever they needed in their perfomances.All the spoken data were recorded. Concerning the repair types, there are two self-repairs as reviewed by Buckwalter (2001) which occured in self-assessment, they are Self-Initiated Self Repair (SISR), and Self-Initiated Other Repair (SIOR). The finding showed that SIOR occured 60% of all the repairs in students‘ conversation. Then, it could be as development-oriented self-assessment which can be a valuable additional means to improve students speaking since it is one of the motives that drive self- evaluation, along with self- verification and self- enhancement.Also, this development- oriented self-assessment began to receive attention as the result of increasing interest in the learners- centered approach. The results are hoped to give beneficial implication on student‘s oral performance assessment.

Abstract

The current study aims to disclose how arguments of writer and sources of other voices are generated in the pedagogical-proposed texts in the textbook under appraisal analysis. While a plethora of studies on evaluation of interpersonal linguistic features or Engagement resources used in students’ writings in tertiary context, little studies focus on senior secondary level. To fill this niche, this study investigates Engagement resources of expository text in Indonesian mandatory EFL textbook which is used as model or sample for writing section. Students in this level may not be expected to produce good arguments since they are actually in progress to learn how to articulate their ideas through certain genres. Considering this condition in mind, the sample or model text used in the classroom is crucial. Following appraisal framework (Martin White, 2005), two exposition texts are generated as source data in attempt to investigate linguistic features and strategy of the textual voice in expressing authorial or external voices. The findings suggest the needs of evaluation of text provided in textbook from the lens of appraisal analysis as an alternative and it is also recommended for teachers as facilitator in writing exposition text to overtly take Engagement resources into account in teaching process in order to facilitate students’ writing with intertextuality.

Abstract

This paper attempts to describe features of Seaspeak and suggests a way of teaching this specific kind ofcommunication to learners by using a strategy which is called meaning-focused output strand thatincorporates the productive skills of writing and speaking. This strategy is intended to raise learners’ formawareness typical of seaspeak which has a set of constrains of language use of closed register distinctivefrom that of daily communication. Seaspeak is transactional in nature, involving intership and intrashipcommunication. Intership communication involves a vessel’s OOW and VTS when the ship is about to berth,cast off, load or discharge. Learners at Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran need to be well-equipped with how tosuccessfully deal with such a communication encountered later as seafarers. One way of achieving this isby having them actively involved in a diologic meaning construction with their peers an a collaborativemanner. Meaning focused output strand provides them with activities that enable them to benefit from thefeedback and correction they get during the join construction of a maritime discourse from their fellowlearners.

Abstract

Beloved is a novel written by American author, Toni Morrison. Through Beloved, Toni Morrison successfully depicts a heartbreaking phenomenon of slavery that happened in the USA in 1873. Morrison describes the phenomenon of dominance-submission interrelation patterns in a master-slave relationship. By using the concept of racism and slavery, the paper aims at scrutinizing how the whites perform racism and slavery to solidify their domination over the blacks. Besides, it is aimed at investigating the impacts of slavery and racism done by the whites which are experienced by the slaves. Library research and close-reading methods are employed to analyze the novel. Besides, the qualitative and contextual method which focuses on intrinsic and extrinsic elements is utilized. The result of the analysis shows that racism and slavery are major elements that solidify whites’ domination over black slaves. In other respect, racism and slavery lead to great negative impacts for the black slaves. Excessive trauma and identity loss are the major impacts experienced by the slaves as the consequence of slavery and racism.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of English as an International Language on English Language Teaching in Indonesia. In analyzing the impact of English as an International Language, the writer analyzed how cultural issues are presented in English textbooks, and revealed the teachers‘ perspective about learning English in Indonesia. The data were collected from SMP N 1 Wiradesa, Pekalongan. The study revealed that the English textbooks in SMP N 1 Wiradesa mostly represented the local cultures. Some teachers of SMP N 1 Wiradesa preferred textbooks that deal with the life and culture of various countries around the world and the rest of them chose the content that deals with local cultures. Textbooks have played a very important role in the teaching and learning process. This study shows that, basically, local cultural content has become the purpose of EFL teaching as seen from the textbooks but some teachers still believe that foreign cultures are the suitable target of learning English.
