The Effect of Flow Mind Map on Writing Accuracy and Learning Motivation at Islamic Higher Education

Abstract

The investigation attempted to explore the influence of flow mind map on writing accuracy and learning motivation at Islamic Higher Education. There were two variables: flow mind map as a predictor variable; writing accuracy and learning motivation as the outcome variables. The study involved L2 participants at higher education in Kalimantan. The participants was 37 students, consisting of two groups: experiment class and control class. A main effect of one way Anova was used to measure an effect of flow mind map on learners’ writing score and learning motivation. The finding revealed that the value of writing accuracy at F (1,36) = 44.861, SS 3591.045, MS= 3591.045, p= 0.000; and the value of learning motivation at F (1,36) = 40.925, SS 2006.600, MS= 2006.600, p= 0.000. The significance value was below 0.050, meaning there was a statistically difference in the mean of using flow mind map on learners’ writing accuracy and learning motivation. It was recommended that language instructor motivate learners during the learning process. Due to the limited number of sample size, the further investigations with broader scope and larger sample size were needed to validate the research findings.

Abstract

This article concerns with a stylistic analysis on a poem in terms of Systemic Functional Linguistics and Verbal Art Semiotics. The writing uses library research, qualitative data, documentary study, descriptive method and intrinsic-objective approach. The semantic analysis results in both automatized and foregrounded meanings. Then the automatized meaning produces lexical cohesion and in turn, it produces subject matter. Meanwhile, the foregrounded meaning produces the literary meaning and in turn, it creates theme. Finally, the analysis indicates that the subject matter is about a young man in his girlfriend’s dream, the literary meaning is about the memory of dream and the theme is about the unforgettable dream. Abstract

To study the characteristics and significance of American natural literature in the 19th century, the American natural literature writers in 19th century can be analysed consistently. In the following three fields: prose, poetry and novels, several representative writers were selected. Their natural literary creation tendencies and the representative works of natural literature were compared in detail, and the features and meanings of 19th century American natural literature were analysed. The results showed that the American natural literature in the 19th century can promote the progress of American literature, and at the same time, it can enlighten the American people’s way of getting along with nature in the 19th century. By comparing with Chinese natural literature, it was also concluded that the ecological problem was a universal global problem. Its solution can’t be separated from the support of people all over the world. Natural literary writers also hoped that humans can share the earth’s ecosystem with nature in a friendly and harmonious manner.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the students‘ differences and students‘ outcomes in English learning at State Vocational High School 3 (SMKN 3) Purwokerto, Central Java. The samples were second graders at that school. They were 177 fifteen to nineteen year old students. The results indicated that the students‘ both English learning motivation and English language anxiety were at moderate level. There was significant negative relationship between motivation and outcome, but positive correlation between students‘ anxiety and outcome was indicated. It showed that although the students‘ anxiety was high, their learning outcome was till good.

Abstract

The use of English intensifiers keeps changing and flowing. It also varies according to the speaker’s background and style. Quirk, et.al (1992) divides intensifiers into emphasizers, amplifiers (maximizers, boosters), and downtoners (approximators, compromisers, diminishers, minimizers). This research aims to find out the types of English intensifiers on social media, specifically on Twitter. The most frequently used intensifiers are analyzed specifically to dig deeper into the social aspects in terms of the relation with previous studies. There are 8,975 tweets produced by 23 sample users. The data are clear data, which means that they only consist of English tweets, without replies and retweets. From the 8,975 tweets, there are 194,487 word-tokens and 22,877 word-types. In the data, 92 intensifiers are used 1,633 times. The occurrence of intensifiers consists of 153 emphasizers, 480 maximizers, 891 boosters, 11 approximators, 38 compromisers, 46 diminishers, and 14 minimizers. This study reveals that the most used intensifier on Twitter is so. The use of so is quite popular since Tagliamonte Roberts (2005) also found in their study that the use of ‘so’ and ‘very’ were the most frequently used. Besides, this study also corresponds to Setayesh and Vaez-Dalili (2018) that boosters are the most frequently used.

Abstract

This research aims to develop denotative and connotative meanings in sayyid El-Rais' videos, as well as reveal myths based on Barthes's perspective. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. Data collection technique used observation and taking notes technique. Researchers used descriptive analysis techniques based on the Miles and Huberman model are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The results showed that reading of first level in semiotics perspective produced several codes that referred to text structure including; symbolic, semantic, and hermeneutic. Denotatively, the speech in video reflect outpouring of a Palestinian child about incidents that happened to him, called deprived homeland. The second level reading that refers to code development resulted in a myth of religious tolerance. In connotative meaning, there are portraits of religious intolerance that are carried in these stories. This speech presents as religious intolerance representation felt by the Palestinian people so that the author's message that can be taken through this portraits is able to increase awareness of religious tolerance and empathy for others as humanity form

Abstract

In the teaching of reading comprehension, there are many different strategies that can be used to simplify the process of teaching. The determination to selec teaching strategies is not arbitrary, but should be considered from various aspects. There are a number of strategies that can be applied to improve the students’ comprehension. The strategies are designed to help teachers bring knowledge about learners, guide learners to read the text, help them develop active and focused reading activities, and strengthen  the them in conceptualizing ideas taken from the reading text. One type of readings that can be used is authentic or original text not to be made for the benefit of foreign language teaching. The goal was to determine the ability of language learners to analyze the text. Key Words: reading comprehension, authentic material, teaching strategies

Abstract

The rapid development of technology has altered so many aspects of people‘s private and social needs and activities including but not limited to communication, education, economy, commerce, and entertainment. In educational context, teachers and students‘ use of technology might be supported by several factors such as demand of academic and private use, increasing free internet access, as well as government and school policy on ICT-based instructions. In addition, use of technology among teachers is influenced by their attitudes. For years now, research focusing on teachers‘ attitudes towards technology use with Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) has been very much conducted to explore teachers‘ particular use of the digital devices and Web 2.0 technology. However, investigation of teachers‘ attitudes towards technology choices by using a Cognitive Affective Conative (CAC) Model by Schiffman Kanuk (2004) in Jain (2014) is not yet very much done. Accordingly, the paper is an attempt to evaluate English teachers‘ attitudes towards technology use in their EFL classroom practices through CAC model of attitudes. Qualitative descriptive approach with a survey method was employed. The study involved English teachers of primary and secondary education in Central Java, Indonesia. The survey questionnaire was used to obtain the required research data. Finally, the pedagogical implication is presented.

Abstract

Of the many different dialects of English such as British English (hereafter BrE), American English (hereafter AmE), Australian English (AsE), or Canadian English (CnE) or even Singaporean English (hereafter Singlish), etc, the most common widely use across the globe are BrE and AmE. The two dialects of English, as a matter of fact, are dominantly used in any kinds of fields to mention a few such as politics, economics, diplomatic relationship, medical, information communication and technology (ICT), and education as well. The debate about the use of BrE and AmE often centers on education especially in the process of learning and acquiring the English itself because the two dialects of English provide some different and distinctive features. Because of their differences and distinctive features, the learners often find difficulties and often make them confused which one to use. This paper is attempting to review the unique features of BrE and AmE focusing on the spellings.

Abstract

Asynchronous learning can be the best choice to provide a new learning environment during the pandemic situation because asynchronous environments treat students as autonomous learners. Students can learn with no time limitation, and students can learn on online activities independently. E- EFL learning can be done by adopting asynchronous learning. This study examined the asynchronous learning effect on the students listening skills. This learning also adopts the principle of top-down and bottom-up listening strategies. Teachers modify and develop the listening activities to meet the students' needs by using the Google Form link. In this research, the researchers introduce news items as listening resources. The researchers conducted this study to study the listening proficiency of first-semester students before and after implementing the top-down and bottom-up listening processes in asynchronous learning environment. This experimental research is one group pretest and posttest only. To determine the effectiveness of the asynchronous top-down and bottom-up listening processes, the researchers used the Wilcoxon test to analyze the significant difference between the pre and posttest. The researchers conclude that the top-down and bottom-up process in listening is suitable for teaching news items. The paired sample test proved a significant difference between the pre and posttest data which then indicates that the students' listening comprehension on news items increases significantly. Asynchronous learning offers students many advantages while they are practicing online listening. Problems and listening difficulties challenge the teachers to develop the learning management for further achievement.
