Abstract

The knowledge of machine translation has great importance in the pre-translation process, particularly when translating a literary work. There were a plethora of studies about the translation of cultural-specific items (CSI) with machines. However, they have not addressed machine translation post-editing to improve its translation. This study aims at describing the semantic analysis in the translation of cultural-specific items (CSI) by machine translation (MT) from Indonesian into English, analyzing their translation and whether or not they have similar meanings between the source text and target text to get a better quality translation. Qualitative research using descriptive methods was applied. The data were 12 sentences of CSI in the form of concrete and five sentences of CSI regarding socio-cultural terms from the short story of Betawi folklore entitled Angan-Angan si Muin (Muin's Wishful Thinking). The result revealed that the 2nd generated the better translation in concrete. Both machine translations (MT) produced different translations for translating CSI of socio-cultural terms. Therefore, post-editing is taken to improve their translation with semantic analysis of relation meaning with primary considerations such as material, shape, size, function, and description. Machines translator (MT) helps us to work efficiently and improve accuracy. But, the results of machine translations must still be reviewed by human translators to ensure key quality requirements are satisfied, including fidelity or correctness, intelligibility or clarity, and style, so we need post-editing translation.

Abstract

Myth is an important part of the history of Indonesian civilization. This study tries to reveal the position of tigers as a myth believed in Sundanese society. In conducting the research, textual analysis by using Kurniawan’s Man Tiger as the primary data was employed. The researcher analyzed how the tiger as a symbol in Sundanese myth represents a specific power relation in society. Levi-Strauss’ structuralism was used. After determining units, episodes, and mythemes, binary opposition was used to reveal the meanings. The results of the study show that Man Tiger has eight episodes. It is also found out that there are different power relations established by two basic situations, namely Sundanese traditional and urban societies. In Sundanese traditional society, tiger owners are considered heroes because they protect people from both invaders and robbers. Because of this, they are put in a high place. These beliefs and power relations are very evident in the sphere of traditional society, while they begin to fade in the urban society. In other words, Sundanese traditional society has a myth-based-power relation showing that the tigers’ owner have notable and high position, while the urban society socially has no power relation based on myth.

Abstract

The digital age, which has impacted EFL teaching and learning in Indonesia, has compelled educators to uphold higher instruction standards. Multimodality is currently an updated topic in relation to digital media in EFL learning. This study intends to examine the effects of Indonesian EFL teachers' multimodality perceptions in the teaching materials. It clarifies how EFL teachers in secondary schools use multimodal literacy practices for their students to develop learner’s critical thinking and creativity. A mixed method with an explanatory sequential design was employed, with quantitative data analysis serving as the primary source of support for the results of the qualitative analysis. This study included 38 EFL in-service teachers in Indonesia. Open and close-ended questionnaires with score measurements as well as interviews regarding the multimodal structure expression, content, and preference were used to gather the data. The findings of the participants’ multimodal literacy reveal a respectable mean score of 71.4 and standard deviation of 11. The questionnaire analysis results indicate that utilizing elements of visual (real images), auditory, and written elements is helpful in explaining the teaching and learning materials to the learners and can ensure that they have a thorough understanding of the materials using multimodal expression, content and preference. Overall, this shows that Indonesian EFL in-service teachers have shown adaptability in implementing multimodal literacy in their instructional materials, and they are conscious of switching from traditional to digital mode. As a result, more research is required to investigate the multimodal literacy practices used by EFL teachers in Indonesia

Abstract

Textbooks are a powerful tool for the construction of social identities. Consequently, the manner in which gender is portrayed in visuals in textbooks can greatly affect the images of males and females in the society that learners develop. If gender bias in textbooks is addressed, it would be a great accomplishment towards achieving equality in education: a fundamental goal of both Education for All (EFA) and sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the Kenyan context, the National Policy on Gender and Development (NPGAD) was developed to address disparities in the visibility, status, and perceived potential of males and females portrayed in textbooks. However, reviews on Kenyan textbooks suggest that subtle issues around gender representation imbalance are evident. With this mismatch between policy and practice, this paper analyses gender construction in selected visuals in Kenyan secondary schools English s from a socio-semiotic perspective. The findings revealed that males’ images transcended the females’ in selected textbooks. The study also revealed that males were assigned the actor role and were more involved in both non-transactional and transactional actional processes than females. Further, males were found to make direct gazes at the reader than females. The paper concludes that disproportionate representation of gender is evident in the selected textbooks where males are implicitly or explicitly presented as superior to females. The study recommends that gender representation be considered in the design and selection of visuals to be included in English textbooks. For those textbooks which are already in use, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) could initiate review activities to improve gender parity in the visuals.
