Abstract

Many studies have proven that teacher resilience is one of the fostering factors of teacher commitment to stay in their teaching career. Although many studies have been conducted around the topic of teacher resilience, there is still a gap in the literature on what teacher professional development was done by resilient teachers that contributed to their decision to stay in their careers. In filling the void, this narrative inquiry-designed research aimed at understanding the experiences and perceptions of teachers considered resilient in their teaching career's early years. In-depth interviews were done with four Indonesian teachers to answer two research questions: (1) What features of teacher professional development (TPD) learning activities in which resilient teachers participate? (2) What are teachers’ perceptions about their TPD? The findings show that the teachers undertook both formal and informal TPD programs, such as seminars and webinars, courses and workshops, dialogue with other teachers, observation visits to other schools, and professional literature reading. The teachers believe that teaching is their calling which makes them committed to the teaching profession. And TPD programs are believed to be the supportive factors of their resilience because they equip the teachers with the skills, knowledge, and understanding that they need to tackle teaching constraints.

Abstract

In recent decades, English has gained prominence in Indonesia. However, due to instructors' lack of English proficiency, English instruction at the secondary level shows a significant failure. Today, amid the COVID-19 epidemic, which has pushed remote education, the challenge of teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesian secondary schools becomes more severe. Due to in-service teachers' lack of English proficiency and ICT abilities, future Indonesian English teachers' pre-service education at the secondary level should be revisited. This qualitative study investigates the extent to which teacher education programs (PPG) equip prospective EFL instructors to use Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) in their classroom instruction. It also explores the viewpoints of pre-service EFL teachers (student teachers) and teacher educators on EFL pre-service teacher education programs at several Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) in West Java, Indonesia. Results of surveys and semi-structured interviews as the primary data sources underline the importance of preparing future English teachers by utilising TPACK and providing teacher educators with all the skills and materials required to train their students properly. A key finding of this study is the insufficient English competencies of teacher educators and pre-service teachers. This research is vital for improving English teacher education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) find out the application of the blended learning model during the COVID-19 pandemic at MI Nahdlatus Shibyan Ngemplak and MI Maslakhul Falah Glagahwaru, Undaan Kudus District; (2) find problems that arise during the implementation of the blended learning model at MI Nahdlatus Shibyan Ngemplak and MI Maslakhul Falah Glagahwaru, Undaan Kudus District. This study emphasizes more on the type of field research (field research) and is qualitative in nature, with data collection methods in the form of interviews, observation, and documentation. Based on the findings of this study, MI Nahdlatus Shibyan Ngemplak and MI Maslakhul Falah Glagahwaru used a blended learning approach to respond to mass learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the COVID-19 emergency curriculum, the concept of blended learning has been implemented in the two madrasas since the 2020–2021 school year. The blended learning model in madrasas is divided into two stages, namely planning and implementation. This program follows the syntax of the blended learning model, which includes information search, acquisition, and synthesis in online or face-to-face learning. The function of the teacher as a mediator for the ongoing teaching and learning activities cannot be separated from the successful application of the blended learning paradigm. Classroom management, management of learning activities, and learning techniques are examples of tactics that must be planned. In implementing the blended learning model, there are obstacles, including in terms of buildings and infrastructure, facilities, and parental support.

Abstract

The short story as a literary work has been ubiquitously used to teach language and literature. However, not all short stories are appropriate and suitable to be used in the language-learning classroom. One of the aspects that should be considered in choosing short stories to teach language and literature is the readability level. The matching of appropriate text difficulty level to the readers’ reading ability is crucial to inculcate an interest in reading and elicit comprehension. Derived from this rationale, this study aimed to investigate the readability level of short stories used in the Introduction to Educational English Literature Course (IEEL). Moreover, this study also attempted to analyse the students’ perceptions of the short stories assigned to them to read in the IEEL course. In measuring the readability level, document analysis utilizing the Flesch-Kincaid Readability Formula was employed. To strengthen the data and ensure triangulation, 5 participants were purposely selected to be interviewed to explore their perspectives after reading those short stories. The results showed that 3 short stories namely The Birthday Party, The Dead Men’s Path, and Turning Thirty were categorized as standard (63.1), fairly easy (74.4), and easy level (83.7) respectively. Lastly, further inquiries through semi-structured interviews found that the 5 participants were reported to have positive viewpoints after reading those short stories.

Abstract

This study was aimed at describing the effectiveness of integrating technology in English language teaching for stimulating students’ critical thinking designing in the form of a systematic literature review. The data were obtained by documenting relevant research articles published in national and international journals indexed in SINTA (4-1) and SCOPUS. There were 52 research articles focusing on the integration of technology in English language teaching for stimulating students’ critical thinking. Those research articles were re-selected by using inclusion criteria. The gained data were reviewed, compared, and interpreted with relevant theories. A factual content analysis was conducted to check its validity and reliability. The findings showed that the integration of technology is distributed into three learning aspects; learning method, learning media, and learning platform. Technology is integrated as a learning method through the implementation of online learning, digital storytelling, and online peer-reviewed assessment. Those methods showed a positive impact towards students’ critical thinking. The integration of technology as a learning media was purposed to provide a fun learning environment and improve students’ learning motivation. It also influences students’ critical thinking. It was found that the learning media used by teachers in English language teaching were Youtube video, Toondoo, E-book, Mind Mapple, podcast, and other browsing applications. Those media were effective in stimulating students’ critical thinking. Using technology as a learning platform is also effective to stimulate students’ critical thinking as a supporting tool in providing forum discussions and conducting online classrooms interaction that enable students to explore their critical thinking skills.
