Abstract

Black Widow is a sci-fi superhero movie directed by Cate Shortland. This movie narrates the lives of the black widows under the control of a secret crime organization called the Red Room Academy. In Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff as the main character and ex-black widow is shown taking down the Red Room Academy and its male leader, Dreykov. This current study utilizes a poststructural feminism approach and the concept of kyriarchy in literature to reveal the poststructural feminism inclination and the portrayal of kyriarchy in the movie. This study uses poststructural feminism and Susan Fiorenza's concept of kyriarchy as the theories. In analyzing the data, this currrent study uses visual narrative approach. The analysis reveals the postructural feminisim inclinations portrayed by Natasha Romanoff in two categories, those are infiltration and act of self-sacrifice. Moreover, the portrayal of kyriarchy is revealed through the Red Room Academy's system and Dreykov's sexist belief. This explains how sexist belief and the practice of kyriarchy by Dreykov affects the women as the target of oppression. Thus, no matter what the situation is, women are always at a disadvantage.

Abstract

Good reading skills are related to individual basic skills in achieving success and prosperity. However, reading skills in Indonesia are still low. The evidence was from the PISA results, which revealed little progress from 2015 to 2018. In tackling this problem, one of the schools in Indonesia, the Junior High Public School (JHPS) 1 Muntilan, responded it by creating Literacy Online program (henceforth LION) to support government programs. Research on reading ability has been extensively done, but no study investigates the LION program. Therefore, this study aimed to discover the perceptions and challenges of teachers who have a pivotal role in the success of the LION program at JHPS 1 Muntilan. This study employed mixed-method research to get the data. The data was collected by providing a closed-ended questionnaire and interviews. The results of the study revealed that the teachers felt enthusiastic, enjoyed, affectionate, and comfortable with implementing LION. Moreover, the teachers revealed that theprogram gave a spark of hope and excitement for students toward learning autonomy.  The students were found to have evolved to more actively respond to the questions following the reading materials. Accordingly, this could lead to the success of the National Assessment. Interestingly, the teachers felt overwhelmed and confused when facing passive students and had limited knowledge to give proper readings.

Abstract

African women writers had not been allowed a stage to air their views about the traditional African set-up. However, with feminist winds of change sweeping from Europe to Africa in the 18th century, the social climate in most parts of the globe began to change. Minority groups challenged the Western canon and protested against their status as the second-class citizens. The groups included Afro-Americans, formerly colonized black people, women, gays, lesbians, etc. This paper focuses on one such group: black women. Being marginalised as both black and female, the African women writers started to interrogate not only the mainstream society, but also challenges faced by women in traditional African societies. The paper adopts feminism as a theory through which issues impacting African women’s lives in their respective traditional set-ups are crystallised. Feminism has various branches, of which, black womanism is one of them. As such, this paper adopts Alice Walker’s black feminism to unearth the emotions and perceptions about their daily challenges.

Abstract

Teachers’ personal and professional identities play a crucial role in the learning process. This research aimed to reveal the gap between teachers’ personal and professional identity from the perspective of Indonesian teachers. There were five participants in the research. The participants were selected based on geographical differences. The participants were approached by using virtual media communications. A phenomenological approach with the semi-structured interview was applied to deeply discover and identify teachers’ experiences on personal and professional identity development. Then, thematic analysis was used to put the data into themes. The study revealed that teachers’ personal identity was perceived as individuals’ goals, values, beliefs, actions or behaviour, and interactions in the social-cultural area. Whereas, the professional identity was related to professional competence, teaching ideology, and transferring cultural content and role model. In addition, a teacher’s personal and professional identity are overlapped in terms of identity formation and identity in social interaction. Besides, they are confined by a classroom setting and social context. This research is expected to have a great contribution to teacher identity development, especially for teachers’ personal and professional identity development.

Abstract

In terms of instruction and materials, EFL for children is very different, particularly if it is taught in inclusive classes where children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) are grouped in one class and receive the same education. Therefore, students with SEN require a learning support assistant (LSA) to aid in explaining and guiding their learning. In this study, we will therefore employ a narrative inquiry methodology to describe the experience of an LSA in assisting students in the English language. The collected data were examined using content analysis. Challenges associated with the LSA profession that accompany EFL learning, differences in the educational background of the profession, as well as social relationships and interactions with the school environment are the focus of this study's findings, which are intended to provide other learning support assistants with based-on-experience information.

Abstract

This paper employs Foucault’s theory on Discourse, Power and Knowledge to highlight the powers shaping the Egyptian woman in God Dies by the Nile. The paper also uses the feminist theory in identifying the ways that the Egyptian woman uses to resist the discourse of power in the narrative. The paper therefore focuses on the power dynamics in the novel. Thus questions addressed in this paper include: how the discourses of family, society and religion are generated in the novel; how patriarchy shapes the discourse of power in the narrative and the subtle means used by women to resist and play out power in the novel. Using thematic approach, textual analysis and the novel as a primary source, the paper discusses patriarchal discourse and power politics. Examining a selection of discourses and how they affect the body of the female help in appreciating the effect of patriarchy on women in the novel. The study concludes that discourse alone does not explain the power dynamics in the novel. Silence, rebellion, female bonding, the creation of paranoia in the men through silent but open resistance to patriarchy are some of the power dynamics played out in the novel by the female gender.

Abstract

In countries such as Kenya, where textbooks are a core component of classroom experience, the materials have the potential to shape socially enacted identities. Gender representation via linguistic signs in textbooks can have a substantial impact on how students perceive men and women in society. In order to achieve equity in education, which is a key mandate of both the Education for All (EFA) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), gender bias in textbooks must be addressed. The National Policy on Gender and Development (NPGAD) in Kenya sought to enhance equal participation among men, women, girls and boys in education and other thematic areas. This paper contributes to the discourse on gender representation in textbooks by examining gender portrayal in linguistic signs found in selected English secondary school textbooks using Halliday’s (1985, 2014) systemic functional grammar approach. The study applied the explanatory sequential research design (Creswell Plano Clark, 2011). A document analysis guide derived from the model for analyzing linguistic signs by Halliday (1985, 2014) was employed in the analysis of quantitative data from the linguistic signs in four English textbooks. Results showed that in the selected textbooks, masculine representations were more prevalent than those of females. The study also revealed that males were more involved in all the three mood types namely; declarative, interrogative and imperative. Again, more males than females appeared as theme and rheme of clauses. Additionally, it emerged that males engaged more in verbal processes than females did. The study concludes that men are either implicitly or explicitly portrayed as being superior to women in the linguistic signs in the analysed textbooks. The study recommends that Ministry of Education in Kenya initiates measures to alleviate gender disparity by focusing on the issue of gender representation in textbooks. On the other hand, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) may find these results useful in improving the textbooks evaluation based on gender equality prototypes. Improved evaluation, could be used as a basis to revise textbooks currently in use and guide in the development of new ones.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating how different cultures are depicted in textbooks. The textbooks were selected by examining their reference to Inner, Outer, and Expanding Circle countries, including cultural themes which represent these countries. This study’s data corpus consisted of two EFL Primary textbooks, Hang Out 4 and Hang Out 5. Employing Critical Discourse Analysis as the research design, this study adopted two frameworks to analyze the data: Kachru’s (1986) Concentric Circles to categorize the cultural contexts and Pfister and Borzelli’s (1977) categorization to identify the cultural aspects represented. The findings revealed that the cultural representation in the textbooks reflected significant diversity. Particularly within the inner circle, the United States was the nation whose culture was best represented. While in outer and expanding circles, East Asian countries were dominant and included all five categories. However, Indonesia as the source culture has little reference in this textbook.

Abstract

Owing to its dual correlation with homosexuality and eroticism, danmei (Boys Love) in China is subject to state censorship, so in a hit online serial The Untamed adapted from a popular danmei novel, the male-male relationship between protagonists has been expurgated. Obsessed with the romance in the original narrative yet dissatisfied with the officially sanctioned adaptation, fangirls create fanfiction, including real person slash (RPS) based on the leading actor Xiao Zhan and his co-star from the The Untamed. Xiao’s fans reported a piece of RPS titled Xiazhui and Archaic of Our Own (AO3) that hosted it, causing AO3 to be blocked in China on 29th February 2020. Since Xiazhui features real celebrities, it concerns moral debates. Furthermore, Xiazhui pertains to Xiao’s fanbase whose acts are interconnected with toxic fandom and the so-called ‘heresy-style star worship’. More significantly, the contentious aspect of Xiazhui also lies in its homoerotic depictions that are regarded as indecent in a contemporary Chinese context.
