Abstract

Metadiscourse denotes the writer’s use of language to enhance interaction with the reader. This article investigates the use of language to persuade readers and represent the company positively. The study examines the use of Metadiscourse resources in CEO letters of financial service companies listed in the Nairobi Securities Exchange. A total of 36 companies were sampled to represent companies that offer insurance, investment and banking services. The study utilized text analysis software (AntConc 3.5.7) to determine the quantitative outline of the Metadiscourse devices. This was followed-up with a qualitative analysis of the context in which the devices were applied, for further interpretation of the findings. All devices in the metadiscourse model were found in the text with a notably high incidence of self-mentions and transitions. This was attributed to the need to create reader-participation as well as to ease reader navigation through the text.  The findings are expected to further explain the role of Metadiscourse in financial disclosure by elaborating on its rhetorical nature. Results also highlight the importance of Metadiscourse features in the interpretation of content and attainment of diverse professional goals. Keywords: Interactional Metadiscourse, Interactive Metadiscourse, Genre, CEO Letter, Rhetoric

Abstract

Writing academic papers is challenging for students majoring non-English programs in higher education. This is because they must both understand academic writing conventions and English writing rules at the same time. This case study explores further perceptions of university students of Business and Administration regarding their academic writing skill. 20 students were selected by purposive sampling technique and were administered an online questionnaire to collect the data. Afterwards, three volunteer students joined in-depth interview to find out more information from the online questionnaire. The data were then analyzed by two techniques including frequency count for the quantitative data and qualitative analysis by employing thematic analysis for the qualitative data. The results discovered that students' perceptions of their academic ESP written competence in Business English were positive. Students are aware of both their own and the ESP writing requirements. However, these positive attitudes have not yet been fulfilled with appropriate writing lessons. Therefore, it is important for further research to conduct a study regarding the ESP writing lesson that works best for the students.

Abstract

While online learning has advantages, it also poses challenges, notably the lack of personal connection between educators and students, impacting the psychological aspect of learning. The pandemic period further highlighted issues like technological disparities and limited lecturers' competence in using learning applications, affecting the effectiveness of online education. Ensuring a quality educational experience is crucial. This study examines lecturers' satisfaction with videoconference-based virtual meeting applications in teaching-learning activities at a private college. Using a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, the study explored lecturers' satisfaction. The findings indicate that while virtual meetings might not guarantee improvements in students' English skills, the lecturers were satisfied with the system's implementation. Collaborative teaching through virtual meetings balanced asynchronous learning with direct feedback, fostering class interaction and satisfying the urge for distance learning. The study sheds light on lecturers' satisfaction with virtual meeting applications, underscoring the need to address challenges to enhance online education's effectiveness and quality.

Abstract

Even though previous researchers recognized professional identity change as one of the most vulnerable stages for EFL teachers, only a few researched it in Indonesia's context, applying the critical incident technique. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the EFL teachers’ professional identity transformation through teachers’ factors and how those factors influence their professional identity. This study used the Critical Incidents Technique (CIT) to employ an open-ended questionnaire for Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and Individual in-depth interview to gather the data. Five teachers from different schools in Sintang, West Kalimantan, were purposively chosen as the study participants. The results showed that the teacher faced three personal, interpersonal, and organizational stress factors. The personal factors were related to teachers’ emotional control and self-efficacy. Interpersonal factors were related to students’ behavior in the classroom and negative relationships with colleagues. Meanwhile, organizational factors were related to the lack of media facilities and salary. Despite the stress, EFL teachers showed their ability to cope. The participants broadened on how they dealt with the situation, how stressors affected their identity as teachers, such as preserving their motivation to become teachers, and how they overcame job dissatisfaction.
