Abstract

Teaching English language learners is the initial phase of language education programs for English language teachers when they are introduced to a child's world, developmental traits, needs, and interests as well as teaching and learning approaches for their learners. This study, which employs the qualitative approach of narrative inquiry, shares personal accounts of the researcher's experiences and expectations in an attempt to expand knowledge about the most effective ways to teach English to young students. The results imply that English teachers should motivate ELLs to acquire the language, offer interactive language worksheets as in-class activities, and see mistakes as learning opportunities. The findings also revealed how important it is to include technology into learning environments and give ELLs opportunities to practice their language skills. The findings of the study have implication for both present and future research, but primarily for English practice and education.

Semiotics is a science that examines signs. In interpreting signs, the researchers use Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotic analysis. This model is famous for its triangle of meaning: the sign, object, and interpretant. The result of this research is that there are elements of a sign portraying the controversy of overfishing: Bycatch, the Fishing Industry, the Statement: "Stop Eating Marine Animals," and Marine Stewards Council (MSC) certification. The four controversial portrayals will be deep to analyze from a semantics perspective to produce a significant meaning based on the scene that appeared in the documentary movie itself. In conclusion, semiotic perception will increase students' understanding of linguistics through signs, objects, and interpretant

This study aims to describe Hallyu versus Indonesian local (Javanese) culture among the people of the city of Kediri by using a mixed method. According to the study, Hallyu has begun to transform the status of Javanese culture as a global culture in the city of Kediri, as indicated by the increased interest of young people in the city of Kediri in symbols of Korean culture such as music, food, fashion, makeup, and even language. Hallyu can influence people and their attitudes. Women, for example, prefer to follow the flow of Hallyu more than men.

Abstract

This study aims to portray how students reflect their learning process in a creative writing course through their poems. Forty-seven students of an English Literature Department in a private university in Semarang participated in this study. The course mainly covered the short story and poetry writing. Poetry writing was started in the second half of the semester. In this study, the students were required to write a learning reflection to look back at the process they had been through. Employing Hanauer’s meaningful literacy concept (2012), the researchers analyzed how students reflected their learning process in their poems. It is argued that language learning should enable students to use language in a way that is more meaningful and relevant to their personal experiences. In terms of reflection, it is believed that by deliberately looking back at their learning process students can objectively evaluate, understand and make sense of their journey. This study found four major themes in the students’ reflective poems namely altered perspective, students’ struggle, increased self-assurance, and students’ future expectations. In conclusion, language learning should embrace meaningful literacy in which students should be allowed to deliver their personal and meaningful expressions, in this case by writing poetry.
