Abstract

The Japanese language used in fictional work differs from the standard Japanese language. This language variety, which highlights the stereotypical qualities of a character, is called yakuwarigo or role language. Among the many types of role language, aruyo kotoba highlights the characteristics of a Japanese-speaking Chinese character. This study aims to describe the types and meaning of illocutionary act on aruyo kotoba utterances using the pragmatic theory. The source of the data is a manga titled Ranma 1/2 by Takahashi Rumiko which was first published in 1987. The research is conducted using note-see method for the data collection. Then, the theory of Koizumi (1993) is used to classify the data according to its illocutionary speech act types based on the context of the utterances. The result shows that there are 27 data of illocutionary act on aruyo kotoba in the manga of Ranma 1/2 with the aru and yoroshi ending in sentences, namely 4 data of assertive illocutionary act, 7 data of expressive illocutionary act, 2 data of comissive illocutionary act, and 14 data of directive illocutionary act. The meaning contained in the illocutionary acts are tell, emphasize, insult, complain, getting mad, compliment, insinuate, command, and request.

Abstract

Naruto and Naruto Shippūden are the anime series adapted from Masashi Kishimoto’s manga. The Naruto series aired in Japan from 2002-2007, while Naruto Shippūden was from 2007-2017. These animes are interconnected, Naruto is part one and Naruto Shippūden is part two. These animes took some of the original traditions of the Shinobi though not the same. Indeed, Shinobi is real and not a myth. If studied historically, Shinobi were considered ancient warriors of Japan other than the Samurai-侍. Nevertheless, the theory about the birth of the Shinobi is complicated to trace, but Shinobi existed in feudal Japan, especially during the Sengoku Jidai-戦国時代. This research tries to examine the cultural reality and facts of the Shinobi in the Naruto and Naruto Shippūden series. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The result of this study shows that Naruto and Naruto Shippūden adopted the reality of the Japanese Shinobi. Some of the original Shinobi elements were adopted in this anime such as the use of weapons, hand seals, the use of nature elements, and so on. Through these animes, viewers are invited to recognize the traditions of the Japanese Ninja world.

Abstract

The existing literature on political scandals predominantly focuses on their detrimental effects on society at large. This paper aims to offer an alternative perspective, arguing that political scandals can lead to positive change. It does so by examining the case of Japan’s ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its ties to the controversial religious organization, the Unification Church (UC). These ties were brought into public attention, following the assassination of the former Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe. Drawing on the framework of scandal mediation process (Prusa, 2010), this paper defines scandal as a form of communication between the elite and the masses, that facilitated by the media. By consulting data from newspapers and government reports, this paper investigates the progression of the scandal. It highlights how the communication unfolded during the progression of the scandal through public pressure, intense media coverage, public apologies by members of the political elites, and attempts to mitigate the damage. Moreover, this paper argues that the swift response from the government, notably the passing of anti-malicious donation law, shows that a political scandal can positively impact the functioning of social order. Focusing on how and under what circumstance a political scandal may have a positive impact introduces a richer nuance to the discussion of Japanese political scandals as demonstrated by these findings.

Abstract

Disorder of Sex Development (DSD) encompasses conditions where individuals face challenges in determining their sexual identity, often deviating from the binary gender norms prevalent in society. This research delves into the portrayal of sexual identity formation among DSD individuals, specifically in the manga 'Houkago Hokenshitsu' by Mizushiro Setona. This research is conducted by applying qualitative research methods, research analysis is described or described through written words. The study aims to elucidate the process through which DSD characters navigate their sexual identity within a dream world, while also exploring the interplay between sexual identity, DSD, and feminist psychoanalytic perspectives presented in the comic. Drawing upon Juliet Mitchell's theoretical framework of Unconsciousness and Neurosis as expounded in 'Psychoanalysis and Feminism: A Radical Reassessment of Freudian Psychoanalysis' (2000), this research underscores the significant role of the unconscious mind in shaping individual identity. Mitchell contends that unconscious processes profoundly influence one's psyche, often manifesting in symptoms of hysteria-induced Neurosis, such as anxiety. The findings of this study reveal two key insights: Firstly, the engagement and exploration of the dream realm facilitate the DSD character in crystallizing their desired sexual identity for real-world expression. Secondly, this journey towards self-identification within the dream world precipitates symptoms of neurotic anxiety, stemming from societal pressures and the internal struggle for self-acceptance and autonomy in reconstructing their sexual identity. In essence, this research underscores the intricate dynamics between sexual identity formation, DSD experiences, and the psychological ramifications portrayed in 'Houkago Hokenshitsu', shedding light on the complexities inherent in the quest for personal identity and acceptance. Keywords: DSD; Dreams; Sexual Identity; Feminist Psychoanalysis

Abstract

This research analyzes the conversational structure of the main host in the talk show "Oshareizumu." The primary focus is on the speaking style and interaction strategies used by the main host, Ueda. A pragmatic approach is employed as the theoretical framework, referencing the theories of Yule (2014) and Lidia Tanaka (2014). This study identifies three instances of pauses, three instances of overlap, and one hundred and nineteen occurrences of backchannel or aizuchi. Ueda's intensive and active speaking style demonstrates a high level of involvement in interactions. The results show that Ueda performs his role effectively, as evidenced by a conversational structure with minimal pauses and overlaps, extensive use of backchannel, and an intensive speaking style. These findings suggest that Ueda's contributions significantly enhance the attractiveness of the talk show.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the politeness of representative speech acts and directive speech acts used in NPO-Volcano’s disaster mitigation guideline materials. The method used on this research is descriptive method with data classification based on Searle (1979)’s illocutionary speech acts category and Brown & Levinson (1987)’s politeness scale of speech acts. On the NPO-Volcano disaster mitigation guide material found 41 data of the representative speech acts, which were used for (1) the stating function, (2) the speculating function, (3) the informing function, (4) the mentioning function, (5) the explaining function, and (6) the suggesting function. For the directive speech acts, 30 data were found, which were divided into three types of speech functions, the command function that used in form of ~verb e, ~te kudasai, ~mashou, the inviting function and the prohibiting function. Furthermore, when analyzed using Brown and Levinson's (1987) Politeness Theory, the representative and directive speech acts in the NPO-Volcano disaster mitigation material guide is using “bold on record” and “negative politeness” type of Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory. The forms of negative politeness used are: the use of indirect expressions, respectful language, impersonalization and nominalization.
