Abstract

This study investigates the types and meanings of metaphors found in summer-themed songs by the Japanese musician Mafumafu. The use of metaphor in song lyrics serves to enhance aesthetic value without diminishing the intended message. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method. The classification of metaphors is based on the theory of Stephen Ullman (2007), while the metaphor analysis refers to the framework proposed by Knowles and Moon (2006). The data were collected from six summer-themed songs by Mafumafu using observation and note-taking techniques, and analyzed using the Immediate Constituent Analysis (BUL) technique. The results reveal a total of 29 metaphorical expressions in the lyrics. Among these, abstraction metaphors are the most frequently used, totaling 15 instances. These are followed by anthropomorphic metaphors (6 instances), synesthetic metaphors (5 instances), and animal metaphors (3 instances). The findings indicate that Mafumafu tends to use abstraction metaphors dominantly, suggesting a stylistic preference for expressing complex emotions and imagery in a poetic and imaginative way. These metaphors contribute significantly to the linguistic beauty and depth of the song lyrics.

Abstract

This paper explores the idea of hope of possibility in Keiichi Okabe’s song entitled Weight of the World or translated as Kowareta Sekai No Uta. In the game called NieR: Automata, the song is a cry of a girl who wants to save everyone from anything bad that happened to them. She wanted to redeem her past mistakes by praying the God to help her through dark times, even though the opportunity that she got is unknown. Then, how is the hope of possibility asserted in Keiichi Okabe’s Weight of the World? Through qualitative method and explorative approach, this writing explains the possibility of hope retaining the girl to achieve her dream through the unknown probability. Supported by the theory of Adrienne M. Martin, the concept extended the orthodox view of hope with the girl’s incorporation elements in this song. This is also interrelated with the human condition, highlighting how individual aspirations contribute to collective resilience and transformation. By understanding hope as a multifaceted concept, this paper underscores the complexity of human existence and the potential for renewal within shared struggles. In conclusion, the hope exists in her journey as any unknown possibility to save everyone is answered.

Abstract

In Japan, which is an island nation, the sea is important. The sea is also considered an element rich in meaning and full of mystery. This can be reflected in works of fiction, including anime. This study aims to analyse how the anime Shiroi Suna no Akuatōpu presents the sea through Japanese cultural beliefs and values that are closely related to the existence of kami (nature spirits in Japanese belief) using Roland Barthes' semiotics method. In Barthes' analysis, anime, like movies, are treated as texts that can be read and interpreted. Text or images are a system of signs that serve to shape meaning. The representation of the sea is examined through story elements and characterizations based on semiotic analysis involving signifier, signified, denotation, connotation. The sea in the anime Shiroi Suna no Akuatōpu functions as an important signifier that symbolizes the emotional journey of the two main characters, Kukuru and Fūka. Ultimately, the sea represents a myth realized through the spiritual experiences of the characters and the story. This research emphasizes the importance of the sea reflected through Japanese popular culture as a symbol of change and the relationship between humans and nature.

Abstract

The Dutch East India Company (VOC), founded in 1602 (Keicho 7), exported Chinese porcelain to Europe and Southeast Asia. However, a civil war broke out in China with the transition from the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, making it impossible to export porcelain. In trouble, VOC turned its attention to Arita, where production was increasing at the time, and concluded an export contract with Japan. At that time, Japan was closed off to the rest of the world, and its only point of contact with other countries was Dejima in Nagasaki. In 1659 (Manji 2), pottery was shipped from Imari Port and headed for Dejima, where it was transferred to a Dutch ship and set off overseas. After this, Imari ware continued to be exported for about 100 years, attracting European royalty and aristocrats. Looking at the Imari Road, a sea route for the ceramic trade that took place in the 17th century, it be found that Old Imari was distributed as far as Indonesia, and when I look at the characteristics of the Japanese ceramics that remain in Indonesia, I can see the 83 example was thought to be Old Imari, and the other porcelain was also thought to be Japanese ceramics. Among them, I picked up the Imari Large Dish with Colored Sakura and Eagle Paintings in Kinrande Style and inferred that this work was intended for export. In the Edo shogunate, the falconry system (takagari) was practiced frequently, and it is thought that the patterns were selected for Edo art works, especially Ko-Imari, which were exported overseas.

Abstract

Carnivore women have become a phenomenon in Japan. Carnivore women is a term used to describe women whose characteristics are more aggressive and different from the traditional Japanese women’s behavior standard. This phenomenon has been represented in media, including manga. There are two mangas that seem to portray carnivore women through their plot, which are Takane no Hana Nara Ochitekoi!! and Boku no Kanojo wa Saikou Desu!. This research aims to analyze how the heroines in those mangas that are identified as carnivore women show their gender expression. This research uses Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) theory as well as qualitative descriptive approach with textual analysis method to carry out the analysis. The result of this research shows that both heroines from Takane no Hana Nara Ochitekoi!! and Boku no Kanojo wa Saikou Desu! show their gender expression mostly through masculine traits and behaviors, such as aggressive, masculine, dominant, and athletic. However, they also show it through feminine and androgyny traits and behaviors, although not as dominant as their masculine ones. It means that the portrayal of carnivore women represents a deconstruction of the gender expression of women while keeping some of the traditional feminity traits.

Abstract

This study investigates the distribution and syntactic-semantic functions of the Japanese case particle no (の) in news articles published on NHK News Web Easy during March 2025. The aim is to provide a descriptive analysis of how the particle no operates within simplified Japanese news texts. Data were collected using web scraping techniques through the ParseHub platform, allowing automated and structured extraction of 80 articles. 508 instances of no were identified and manually analyzed to classify their linguistic functions. The findings show that the most dominant function is a nominal connector, accounting for 422 occurrences, followed by functions such as indicating origin, possession, spatial relationships, and conversational emphasis. The pattern Nominal₁ + no + Nominal₂ was found to be the most common syntactic structure across the dataset. This reflects the critical role of no in forming meaningful and information-dense phrases even within simplified Japanese texts. The combination of automatic data retrieval and manual linguistic analysis in this research highlights the effectiveness of integrating technology and qualitative approaches in language studies. The results contribute to understanding authentic Japanese grammatical usage and provide pedagogical insights for teaching Japanese as a foreign language. Future research is encouraged to expand the scope with longitudinal data and semi-automated analysis tools for broader linguistic coverage.
