Abstract

Background: Overweight is a global health issue that affects an individual’s overall health and quality of life. University students, as a productive age group, are also vulnerable to this condition due to lifestyle changes commonly experienced during academic life. These include irregular eating patterns such as excessive consumption of fast food, low levels of physical activity due to demanding academic schedules, and high stress levels. Aim: To analyze the relationship between overweight and quality of life among students of the Faculty of Medicine, Sam Ratulangi University. Methods: This study employed a quantitative analytic observational approach with a cross-sectional design. Results:  A total of 207 students participated in this research. Among respondents with overweight or obesity, 51 had poor quality of life and 29 had good quality of life. Meanwhile, among respondents with underweight or normal body mass index, 54 reported poor quality of life and 73 reported good quality of life. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between overweight and quality of life among medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Sam Ratulangi University.

Abstract

Background: Antibiotic Resistance is an increasing global issue that recently  been found in the aquatic environment, including rivers. Rivers that flow through a dense population are most likely carrying domestic waste, livestock residues and healthcare effluents containing bacterias as well as antibiotic residue. Such condition urges antibiotic resistence which will somehow transport to the coastal ecosystem.  Manado Bay, which receives water flow from multiple rivers, is at risk of accumulating resistant bacterial populations. Aim: To identify the presence and resistance patterns of bacteria in river water samples discharging into Manado Bay. Methods: A quantitative descriptive study was conducted at two river locations. Bacteria were identified using Gram staining, catalase, and coagulase tests. Antibiotic susceptibility testing used the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method following CLSI 2021 standards. Results: Four bacterial species were identified, which are Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus sp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Lactobacillus sp., each of which exhibited different resistance patterns to various types of antibiotics at each sampling location. Conclusion: Rivers flowing into Manado Bay contain antibiotic-resistant bacteria, indicating environmental exposure to antibiotic residues. These rivers may serve as pathways for the spread of resistant bacteria to coastal areas.

Abstract

Background: Dengue fever (DF) is one of the endemic diseases in Indonesia and remains a significant public health problem. Based on data from the Manado City Health Office, in 2024 there were 126 cases of dengue fever in Paniki Bawah Village. This number of cases is the highest of all recorded health centers. Aim: To describe the knowledge, attitudes, and actions of the community in Paniki Bawah Village regarding the prevention of dengue fever. Methods: This study used a quantitative descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 109 respondents selected using proportional quota sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using univariate analysis. Results: The results showed that most respondents had good knowledge (60.6%), good attitudes (69.7%), and good preventive actions (75.2%). Conclusion: The community in Paniki Bawah Village has good knowledge, attitudes, and actions in preventing dengue fever.

Abstract

Background: Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and is still a health problem in Taratara Village, which in 2024 recorded 115 cases. Community knowledge and attitudes play a role in shaping preventive measures. Objective: To determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes with dengue prevention measures in Taratara Village, West Tomohon District. Aim: To determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes with dengue prevention measures in Taratara Village, West Tomohon District. Methods: This study used a quantitative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample amounted to 95 respondents who were selected through purposive sampling. Data was collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Results: The majority of respondents had good knowledge (80%) and good attitudes (55.8%). However, most showed poor preventive measures (62.1%). The bivariate test showed no significant relationship between knowledge and action (p = 0.139) or between attitude and action (p = 0.415). Conclusion: The knowledge and attitude of the community is relatively good, but optimal dengue prevention measures have not been followed. Increased environmental support and community-based pemberantasan sarang nyamuk activities are needed.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a non-communicable disease with increasing prevalence in Indonesia, particularly in North Sulawesi. Medication adherence is a key factor in blood pressure control and prevention of complications. Family support plays an important role in influencing patient adherence to long-term treatment. Aim: To analyze the influence of family support on medication adherence in hypertensive patients at Tatelu Primary Health Center, North Minahasa Regency. Methods: An observational analytic study with cross-sectional design was conducted involving 60 hypertensive patients at Tatelu Primary Health Center during February 2026. Total sampling was used. Data were collected using a Likert-scale family support questionnaire (11 i t e m s ) and the validated MMAS-8 instrument. Data analysis was performed using Spearman's rho correlation test. Results: The majority of respondents had high family support (56.7%), while medication adherence was predominantly moderate (43.3%) and low (36.7%). Spearman's rho analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between family support and medication adherence (rho = 0.566; p < 0.001), indicating moderate strength of association. Conclusion: Family support has a significant positive influence on medication adherence in hypertensive patients at Tatelu Primary Health Center. Higher family support is associated with higher medication adherence, underscoring the importance of family-centered approaches in hypertension management.
