Abstract

Background: Hypertension can reduce quality of life. The Prolanis Club program supports health stability through physical activity, education, and routine monitoring. Participant activity is thought to affect quality of life. Aim: To determine the relationship between activity levels in the Prolanis Club and the quality of life of hypertensive patients at the Bahu Community Health Center. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 44 hypertensive patients participating in Prolanis. Activity was assessed based on three-month attendance, and quality of life was measured using the EuroQol-5 Dimensions-5 Levels (EQ-5D-5L). Analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test (p < 0.05). Results: A total of 56.8% of respondents were classified as active. The majority (59.1%) had a good quality of life. There was a significant relationship between activity level and quality of life (p = 0.047; OR = 3.536; 95% CI = 1.001–12.485). Active participants were 3.5 times more likely to have a good quality of life than less active participants. Conclusion: Activity in the Prolanis Club is associated with the quality of life of hypertensive patients. More active patients are more likely to achieve a good quality of life.

Abstract

Background: Irrational antibiotic use remains a global health challenge and is a major driver of increasing antibiotic resistance. North Sulawesi showed an increase in the use of Access category antibiotics in 2021–2022, necessitating an evaluation to ensure clinical practices are in line with guidelines. Family doctors, as the frontline of primary health care, play a very important role in controlling the appropriate use of antibiotics. Aim: To determine the level of knowledge, attitudes, and actions of family doctors in prescribing antibiotics and to analyze the relationship between the length of practice of family doctors and their knowledge, attitudes, and actions. Methods: This study used a quantitative cross-sectional design through the distribution of a Google-form questionnaire to 91 family doctors working with BPJS in North Sulawesi. Univariate analysis was used to determine the frequency distribution of the research variables, while bivariate analysis used the Spearman Rank correlation test to assess the relationship between length of practice and knowledge, attitudes, and actions in prescribing antibiotics Results: The results showed that all respondents had good knowledge (100%) and attitudes (100%) regarding antibiotic administration, and most showed good practices (95.6%) while a small number showed adequate practices (4.4%). The correlation test results showed that there was no significant relationship between length of practice and knowledge (p = 0.556; r = -0.062), attitude (p = 0.714; r = -0.039), or actions (p = 0.801; r = -0.027). Conclusion: Family doctors in North Sulawesi have good knowledge, attitudes, and practices in prescribing antibiotics, and length of practice is not significantly related to these three variables.

Abstract

Background: Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains a significant public health problem at global and local levels, including in Manado City. The Malalayang District reports high case numbers due to population density and environmental conditions that support vector breeding. Although preventive information is easily accessible, community preventive practices remain suboptimal. Aim: To identify the factors associated with community practices in dengue hemorrhagic fever prevention in Malalayang District, Manado City. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used involving 110 respondents selected across three high-risk areas. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Results: Most respondents were female (57.3%), aged 17–25 years (30.0%), had a senior high school education (49.1%), were in the emerging middle class category (53.6%), and were exposed to dengue-related information (93.6%). Age (p = 0.001) and education level (p = 0.020) were significantly associated with preventive actions, whereas sex (p = 0.843), economic status (p = 0.144), and information exposure (p = 0.966) showed no significant associations. Conclusion: Dengue prevention practices in Malalayang are influenced by age and education level, while sex, economic status, and information exposure are not significantly associated.

Abstract

Background: Floods occur frequently in Indonesia and pose substantial risks to affected communities. Community preparedness is shaped by levels of knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to disaster risk reduction. Aim: This study aimed to examine the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and practices and flood preparedness among residents of Tateli Tiga Village. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed, involving 97 respondents selected through proportional quota sampling. Data were collected using a validated and reliable questionnaire. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test, as appropriate. Result: The majority of respondents demonstrated good knowledge (82.5%), positive attitudes (78.3%), good practices (86.6%), and adequate flood preparedness (52.6%). A significant association was identified between knowledge and flood preparedness (p = 0.035; OR = 3.247). No significant associations were observed between attitudes (p = 0.070) or practices (p = 0.487) and preparedness. Conclusion: Knowledge was significantly associated with community flood preparedness, whereas attitudes and practices were not.

Abstract

Background: Unintended pregnancy among adolescents remains a major public health concern both globally and in Indonesia. In Manado City, recent data on adolescent behaviour related to the prevention of unintended pregnancy are still limited. Aim: This study aimed to describe adolescent behaviour regarding the prevention of unintended pregnancy in senior high schools in Manado City. Methods: A quantitative descriptive study with a cross-sectional design was conducted. A total of 403 students were selected through cluster random sampling from two schools: SMA A and SMA B, Manado. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability (Cronbach’s alpha: knowledge = 0.931; attitude = 0.736). Data were analysed using univariate methods. Results: Overall, 76.2% of adolescents demonstrated good knowledge, 22.8% had sufficient knowledge, and 1.0% had poor knowledge regarding the prevention of unintended pregnancy. With respect to attitudes, 70.7% of respondents exhibited a positive attitude, while 29.3% showed a negative attitude. Conclusion: The majority of adolescents in Manado City possess good knowledge and hold positive attitudes toward the prevention of unintended pregnancy.

Abstract

Background: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of cervical cancer, which is a global health problem for women, especially in Indonesia. Cervical cancer ranks fourth globally and second in Indonesia as the most common cancer in women in 2022. HPV vaccination is an effective primary prevention and is part of the WHO's global cervical cancer elimination strategy. HPV immunisation in Indonesia was integrated into BIAS in 2023. Medical students are among the high-risk age groups for HPV infection and play a role as future healthcare professionals in raising public awareness about cervical cancer, HPV, and cervical cancer prevention. Aim: To determine the status of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and the inhibiting factors among female students at the Faculty of Medicine, Sam Ratulangi University. Methods: Descriptive research with a quantitative approach and a cross-sectional design through the distribution of a Google Forms questionnaire to 276 female students from the 2025 cohort of the Faculty of Medicine at Unsrat. The analysis used is univariate analysis. Results: A total of 114 respondents (87.8%) had not yet received the HPV vaccine, while 20 respondents (12.2%) had. The dominant barriers were not knowing where to get the HPV vaccine (67.4%), not having time for the HPV vaccine (65.3%), and not receiving a recommendation from healthcare professionals (64.6%). Conclusion: The majority of female students in the 2025 class of the Faculty of Medicine at Unsrat had not yet been vaccinated, with the dominant barrier being not knowing where to get the HPV vaccine.

Abstract

Background: Non-communicable diseases cause the most deaths worldwide. In 2024, Manado City had 11,677 cases of diabetes mellitus (DM) and 43,368 cases of hypertension. Adherence to treatment is an indicator of successful disease management, but national research found that drug compliance and recontrol for DM and hypertension patients remain low. The control and management of diabetes and hypertension are the main focus of Prolanis, but some studies on Prolanis have found high levels of non-compliance, so researchers examined drug compliance and recontrol. Aim: To provide an overview of a drug compliance and recontrol of Prolanis participants with DM and hypertension at the Bailang Public Health Center in Manado City. Methods: Descriptive quantitative approach and a cross-sectional design involving 41 Prolanis DM and 55 Prolanis hypertension at the Bailang Public Health Center in Manado City. The questionnaire used is the SKI 2023. Results: Prolanis DM participants found that 29 people (90.6%) demonstrated drug compliance as directed by their doctor, while 3 people (9.4%) were non-compliant. A total of 31 people (96.9%) attended recontrol regularly, while 1 person (3.1%) attended only occasionally. Prolanis participants with hypertension found that 50 people (90.9%) demonstrated regular drug compliance, while 5 people (9.1%) took their medication irregularly. A total of 51 people (92.7%) attended recontrol regularly, whereas 4 participants (7.3%) did so only occasionally. Conclusion: Prolanis participants with DM and hypertension at the Bailang Public Health Center in Manado City were categorized as compliant with drug therapy and regular in recontrol as directed by their doctor.
