Abstract

This study examines the impact of President Donald Trump’s visa policies on shifts in US education diplomacy within the context of global geopolitics, with particular attention to their implications for international students from Muslim-majority countries and Islamic education networks. Restrictive measures during his administration, including limitations on F-1 and J-1 visas and travel bans targeting several Muslim-majority states, led to a notable decline in international student mobility and weakened the United States’ position as a leading global education destination. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and desk study method, this research is supported by individual-level foreign policy theory and education diplomacy theory. The analysis explores how Trump’s perceptions and leadership style shaped policies affecting higher education, including Islamic education-oriented exchanges and collaborations. It also highlights responses from competing countries such as Canada, Australia, and China, which expanded inclusive education policies and strengthened engagement with Islamic and Global South students. The findings show that these visa policies reduced US soft power and created opportunities for other states to lead in global education diplomacy, underscoring the need for more inclusive policy reforms.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to investigate Junggringan Kawruh Jiwa, a psychospiritual approach grounded in Javanese local wisdom, and its effects on the academic pressure faced by Vocational High School (SMK) students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Data for this study were collected using qualitative methods with a case study design. It included in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The study findings show that the use of knowledge on the edge of psychic is practical for students to use in managing academic anxiety in three main ways: (1) daily reflection rituals: students meditate and breathe, raising their own awareness while at the same time dispersing symptoms of stress; (2) context learning: students employ Javanese philosophical values such as memayu hayuning bawana and urip mung mampir ngombe as a framework to see academic pressure as a part of the inner maturation process; and (3) emotional mentoring from teachers who serve as surrogate parents provides students with psychological support and a place for them to express their emotions outright. Student respondents were generally positive about the program, showing increased openness, decreased anxiety, and increased self-belief, despite initial resistance. The contribution of this research lies in its complementing school guidance and counseling with a whole-school, local cultural approach. It likewise offers sustainable, context-based models of psychospiritual intervention for students from low-income family backgrounds.

Abstract

Instructional activities in Sejarah Kebudayaan Islam (SKI), or Islamic Cultural History, are often teacher-centered, relying on lectures and memorization, which leads to limited student engagement. In response, Thursina International Islamic Boarding School has integrated Virtual Reality (VR) technology into SKI instruction to provide a more immersive learning experience. This study examines the implementation of VR in SKI learning and explores how it facilitates meaningful learning experiences for students. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis and analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that VR implementation involved selecting curriculum-aligned content, rotating its use among students, and utilizing it as a motivational reward for active participation. Meaningful learning was fostered through structured explanations, immersive visualization of historical events, and guided reflection following VR activities. Overall, the integration of VR enhanced student engagement and supported a deeper understanding of Islamic Cultural History. These findings suggest that immersive technologies can enrich Islamic education by promoting more engaging and meaningful learning experiences.

Abstract

The encounter between Salaf Pesantren and educational modernity represents a critical issue in contemporary Islamic education because it shapes traditional epistemology, institutional autonomy, and pesantren identity. Previous scholarship has extensively examined pesantren modernization, curriculum reform, and institutional adaptation; however, limited attention has been paid to how resistance functions as a strategy for preserving epistemic sovereignty. This study explores how Salaf pesantren in Jember Regency construct resistance to educational modernity. Employing a comparative qualitative case study design, the research was conducted at three Salaf pesantren: Al-Wafa Temporan, Salafiyah Curah Kates Ajung, and Raudlatul Ulum Sumber Wringin. Data were collected through staged interviews, field observations, and document analysis and analyzed using data reduction, thematic coding, and cross-case comparison. The findings identify three models of resistance: absolutist resistance, reforming resistance, and accommodative-reforming resistance. These models are sustained through the preservation of kitab kuning, the authority of the kyai, moral discipline, spatial regulation, technological restrictions, and economic self-reliance. The study argues that resistance is not merely opposition to modernity but a strategy for maintaining epistemic sovereignty through a dual hegemonic structure interpreted within a Foucauldian framework. It further proposes a policy framework based on partnership without intervention that respects pesantren autonomy while supporting context-sensitive modernization.

Abstract

As social media becomes increasingly integrated into higher education, limited empirical research has examined its role in developing religious digital literacy and communication skills among prospective Islamic teachers. This study examines the impact of the 30HariBersuara project, a social media–based video learning innovation, on the religious digital literacy and public speaking competencies of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) students. The study employed a quantitative one-group posttest design with a retrospective pretest involving 97 matched student responses. Data were collected using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire measuring five dimensions: self-confidence and public speaking, literacy and insight, creativity and content production, readiness for the teaching profession, and self-development. The findings revealed an increase in the overall mean score from 3.31 (moderate) to 4.16 (high), representing a gain score of 0.85. The greatest improvement was observed in the literacy and insight dimension (0.99), followed by self-confidence and public speaking (0.89). These findings suggest that social media–based video learning can effectively strengthen students' religious digital literacy and communication competencies while preparing them for their future roles as Islamic educators in the digital era.

Abstract

Islamic textbooks frequently function as vehicles for patriarchal ideology, embedding gender bias within religious pedagogy. This study examines gender representation in the Grade X, XI, and XII Akidah Akhlak textbooks under Indonesia's Merdeka Curriculum, analyzing how visual and narrative content construct asymmetrical religious authority. Using qualitative multimodal critical discourse analysis informed by Kress and van Leeuwen's visual grammar and Halliday's notion of narrative agency, the study codes all gender-identifiable illustrations (N=86) and narrative protagonists (N=52) across the three textbooks. Visually, males appear exclusively in 52.3% of images and females in 19.8%, while 27.9% depict both genders together, an exclusive male-to-female ratio of 2.6:1. Narratively, men are the central figure in 78.8% of stories compared with 21.2% for women, a ratio of 3.7:1; men are predominantly framed as religious authorities and historical agents, while women's narratives divide between exemplars of piety and figures associated with temptation, slander, or social vulnerability. These findings indicate a consistent, though not uniformly extreme, gender asymmetry across visual and textual modes, underscoring the need for more balanced representation in Islamic instructional materials.

Abstract

The BIV Scale is a psychometric instrument designed to measure anti-bullying bystander behavior by integrating Islamic Religious Education (IRE) values into a standardized measurement framework. Unlike existing bystander behavior instruments developed primarily within secular Western contexts, the BIV Scale operationalizes the Islamic psychospiritual constructs of murāqabah, ta'āwun, and 'adālah as measurable behavioral dimensions. This study aimed to develop and validate the instrument for use among junior high school and Islamic junior high school students. A psychometric instrument development design was employed, incorporating content validity, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and reliability testing. Data were obtained from expert validators and 200 students. The findings demonstrated excellent content validity (mean Aiken's V = 0.903), identified a theoretically consistent four-factor structure, confirmed an excellent model fit through confirmatory factor analysis, and showed satisfactory internal consistency across all dimensions (McDonald's Omega = 0.798–0.850). These findings confirm that the BIV Scale is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing anti-bullying bystander behavior grounded in Islamic Religious Education values. The instrument contributes to culturally responsive educational measurement and provides a robust framework for evaluating anti-bullying behavior in Muslim educational contexts.

Abstract

Contemporary Islamic educational institutions increasingly rely on Western-derived leadership theories that, while practically useful, remain epistemologically and theologically misaligned with the formative purposes of Islamic education. This article addresses this gap by developing an Islamic servant leadership framework grounded in Qur'anic exegesis and the Prophetic Sunnah within the Integration of Knowledge (IoK) methodology. Methodologically, the study employs IoK's double movement, interpreting Qur'anic principles in relation to contemporary educational leadership while rereading leadership challenges through those principles, with purposive ta'wīl serving as its primary hermeneutical approach. The analysis identifies four foundational concepts of Islamic servant leadership: servanthood ('ubūdiyyah) as the primary motivation for leadership, leadership as a divine trust (amānah), compassionate leadership (raḥmah) as the prophetic mode of relational engagement, and the serene soul (nafs muṭma'innah) as the indicator of successful servant leadership. These concepts are subsequently applied to three domains of educational leadership: ethical decision-making, authority and delegation, and strategic consultation (shūrā) alongside trust in God (tawakkul). The article argues that an IoK-grounded framework offers a theologically coherent and practically applicable alternative that addresses key conceptual limitations of secular servant leadership theory while strengthening leadership practice in Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

Islamic education studies are currently undergoing significant advancements in global publications. This study explores the progress in Islamic education publications across schools and madrasas through a bibliometric analysis. A keyword search in the Scopus database yielded 403 relevant publications from 2004 to 2023. Using the Bibliometrix R package, Biblioshiny, VOSviewer, and Microsoft Excel, we observed significant growth in this field. The journal "Religion" emerged as the most prominent source, while the most cited document was authored by Denessen et al. The leading contributor is Tamuri, A.H., and the University Kebangsaan Malaysia stands out as the most productive institution. Notably, Indonesia is recognized as the top publishing country, reflecting a high level of international collaboration. Current trending topics include tolerance, social media, religious moderation, leadership, and Islamic education management. These findings underscore the increasing significance of Islamic education research, particularly highlighting the contributions of Indonesian scholars and institutions and emphasizing the importance of regional perspectives and international cooperation. However, this study is constrained by its reliance on the Scopus database and English-language publications. Overall, this bibliometric analysis presents a systematic overview of trends and developments in Islamic education research, offering valuable insights for scholars and policymakers.

Abstract

The era of digitalization demands technological adaptation across all sectors of education, including Islamic private school (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah/MI) in Indonesia. This study aims to construct a contextual Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based curriculum and learning management system for rural private MI. The research employs mixed methods sequential explanatory design, integrating a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and a single qualitative case study conducted at the pilot MI Ulul Albab in Prayungan Village, Sawoo, Ponorogo. Data were collected through literature review, in-depth interviews with the principal and teachers, and field observations. The findings reveal a significant gap between the theoretical potential of AI in education and the realities of limited digital infrastructure in rural madrasahs. Nevertheless, the urgency of AI adoption remains high, particularly in supporting teachers’ administrative tasks and facilitating more personalized learning. Infrastructure constraints are partially offset by the strong enthusiasm and local agency of school leaders and teachers. Based on these findings, this study proposes the concept of “Adaptive Innovation Based on Local Agency,” an approach that emphasizes mobile-first, lightweight, and low-cost AI solutions.
