Abstract

Most people understand that the learning of Kitab Kuning in pesantren is more focused on the normative teachings of students referred to from at-turast written in Arabic. Therefore, to be able to understand it, it is necessary to have the ability to understand the science of nahwu, sharaf, mufradat, balaghah, mantiq, kalam, fiqh, and Sufism. Apart from the general understanding of learning in Pesantren, it turns out that researchers have found the meaning of humanity and spirituality from the treasures at turast that the students learn. The learning strengthens student s' attitudes toward religious moderation and their attitude to diversity amid the diversity of Indonesian society. The researcher obtained this finding while learning the process in Pesantren As-Shuffah Rembang. This study used the phenomenological and autoethnography methods. From this method, the researcher found the meaning of humanity and spirituality of Kitab Kuning, because it is inseparable from the strengthening of learning in understanding the humanity of the Kitab Kuning language. This learning strengthening is carried out through the following: first, strengthening the existence of Kiai during the study of turast; Second, the presence of Kiai forms students' awareness of their universal intelligence. Third, introducing the instrument validates the meaning of the Kitab Kuning from the perspective of maqashid as shari'ah. Fourth, students' linguistic reasoning is strengthened to understand the humanity of the Kitab Kuning.

Abstract

There is a crucial importance to the quality of teachers in education, which necessitates strategies to ensure their competence. It is for this reason that teacher certification is utilized in Indonesia. In spite of the fact that existing research highlights its personal and pedagogical benefits, the socio-cultural dimensions of the initiative have yet to be adequately explored. Using sociocultural theory, this study conducted qualitative interviews with eight male teachers from Islamic kindergartens in four provinces in Indonesia. The analysis of these teachers revealed the following impact: certification increased their income, enhanced their institutional image within the community, provided opportunities for colleagues to share certification experiences, increased motivation to improve performance, and cultivated a spirit of collectivism by sharing certification benefits with non-certified colleagues. In addition to shedding light on income's pivotal significance in individuals’ lives, the certification program served as a cultural tool, power dynamics might be impacted by the certification program, and the program contributed to strengthening community values. As a result of this research, future studies may examine the program's long-term effects on teachers and the community in general, as well as its influence on power dynamics and cultural context.

Abstract

Religious Moderation has been an important program in Islamic Higher Education since 2019. This program contributes to the spread of moderate religious views among Islamic higher education stakeholders. This research is qualitative research conducted at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta. The results of this study indicate that there were variations of religious identities in responding to religious moderation as can be seen from various extra-campus affiliated with mass organizations. Some extra-campus organizations were not inclined toward religious moderation values. These religious identities can be seen from the extra-campus at UIN Surakarta, including IMAMTA, HMI, PMII, IMM, and KAMMI which have various perspectives, perceptions, receptions, acceptance patterns, interactions, and relations of each mass organization concerning religious moderation. This study indicated that religious identities that have metamorphosed into extra-campus organizations have an opportunity to be explored to propose a more nuanced religious moderation at the university level.

Abstract

The accumulation of religious temperament can affect human interaction. In the context of religious behavior, Islam addresses two terms known as al-ifrāṭ (excess) and al-tafrīṭ (neglect). The first refers to the exorbitance of the individual in experiencing and expressing his religiosity, while the second means ignoring a certain religious order easily. Both are conflictual. In terms of inter-religious interaction, believers' excessive religiosity could neglect others' religiosity. In this regard, some people tend to avoid the presence of others due to their excessive religious confession. This research explores religious networks conducted by Muslim organizations in Pamekasan, Madura, that could bridge inter-religious relations between Muslims and others, especially between Muslims and Christians. Through observation and in-depth interviews, this research describes the so-called religious excessiveness that could lead religious believers to respect different religions and faiths. The paper found that the ulama network could become an effective medium to reduce religious excessiveness and promote religious moderation.

Abstract

Eid al-Fitr is a joyous Muslim holiday celebrated after one month of Ramadan, and this celebration extends to the region of Klungkung, Bali. Puri Agung Klungkung, currently led by Ida Dalem Semaraputra (the King of Klungkung), welcomes visits from Muslims during the Halal bi Halal moment of Eid al-Fitr. This article aims to elucidate the contemporary relationship between Muslims and Puri Agung Klungkung, along with its historical context dating back to the 14th century. The research methodology employed in this article includes field research, incorporating direct observations and in-depth interviews with religious leaders in Klungkung. Furthermore, this study scrutinized various documents and historical evidence concerning the relations between Muslims and the Klungkung Royal Palace. This paper concludes that the association between Puri Agung Klungkung began with the arrival of 40 bodyguards from Dalem Ketut Ngelesir (1380-1460) during their visit to Majapahit, and the subsequent grant of customary land to the east of Puri, which was in Gelgel at that time. Eid al-Fitr celebrations in Klungkung encompass a series of events, including Ramadan Safari, Takbir Keliling, Eid al-Fitr Prayer, Open House, and Halal bi Halal. These activities with Puri Agung Klungkung represent efforts to reinforce longstanding relationships.

Abstract

The focus of this article is pesantren and world peace, which discusses the functional role of pesantren in creating moderate santri. This article is reflective, and the result of a literature study carried out by the authors. Based on the results of the author's study, the future of peace for the nation and the world depends on our perspective and abilities, including santri as part of the world community, especially in building mutual commitments in the context of religion, nation, and part of the world community that is moderate in its religious diversity. Based on data from the Indonesian Ministry of Religion, there will be at least 39,043 pesantren in 2022/2023, with a total number of santri of 4.08 million, which certainly has great potential. However, to make pesantren a basis for religious moderation, their durability can be tested, especially in the context of their functional role in world peace. Pesantren’s resilience can be tested from the achievement of its functional prerequisites, both in terms of adaptation, goal attainment, integration, and latency, which should be in line with the needs of creating moderate santri who pioneer peace. However, it is not impossible to become dysfunctional, if it is on the contrary when pesantren is closer to religious radicalism. In addition, one of the biggest challenges is how pesantren can produce moderate santri in this fast-paced digital era, where the influence of cyberspace is often more dominant than conventional learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to critically analyze the process of Islamization with the view of economic, political, and constitutional development in Pakistan. For this purpose, in-depth literature, and newspaper articles were analyzed from 1956 to 1988.  The findings of the in-depth analysis show that from 1956 to 1988, Pakistan saw strong military rule comprising 25 years of martial law collectively during this period. The first attempt to bring Islamization into the country was carried out in 1956 by promulgating an objective resolution. To successfully implement the agenda of Islamization, different government-based Islamic institutions were established: the Islamic Advisory Council and the Islamic Research Center. Bhutto and Zia came into power on the Islamic slogans; Muslim equality and Islamic system. Bhutto brought the 1973 constitution and declared Islam as a religion of the state and also declared Ahamdiya as non-Muslims due to their un-Islamic beliefs. General Zia introduced different Islamic laws through presential order, which describes the harsh punishment for major crimes, changed the direction of the law of evidence, and established Shariat Courts, which were specialized in giving the verdict according to the principles of Islam. It is evident that the political instability and intense martial law led Pakistan into a “politically devastated country” and most of the rulers during this period were strongly against democracy. Therefore, this study helps the reader to figure out the impact of the Islamization policies of different rulers on Pakistani society.
