Abstract

Environmental education (EE) is a crucial issue amid acute environmental degradation. This study aims to analyze the content of Islamic eco-theology in Indonesia's Islamic Religious and Character Education (IRCE) curriculum and integrate it into the curriculum as a form of offering ethical spirituality in environmental education to enhance environmental education. This study is qualitative research that incorporates the literature study supported by structured interviews and document studies. Interviews were used to collect data that concerned teachers of high schools of IRCE in Semarang, Central Java. Document studies were employed to address the IRCE curriculum of High Schools, journal articles, and government policy documents. Data analysis used the descriptive-interactive method. The results showed that the curriculum of IRCE emphasizes the affective domain in environmental education matters. However, it does not yet address the cognitive one appropriately, so IRCE teachers teach environmental education by inserting relevant IRCE themes. This study emphasizes the importance of integrating eco-theology in the IRCE curriculum and recommends that Islamic eco-theology be included in the IRCE curriculum in Indonesia so that the inculcation of environmental education values can work better through IRCE learning.

Abstract

The artificial technology revolution has penetrated various sectors including intelligence education, but its implementation in basic Islamic education remains limited and has not been comprehensively explored. This gap creates an urgency to examine the potential of ChatGPT artificial intelligence as a learning assistant in the context of Islamic education at the elementary level. This research aims to analyze the effectiveness of ChatGPT integration in improving understanding of Islamic concepts among Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (Islamic Elementary School) students. Using a mixed method approach with sequential explanatory design, this research involved 80 students from grades IV-VI from two Madrasah Ibtidaiyahs in Jember and 12 teachers and administrators. The experimental group received ChatGPT-assisted learning developed for basic Aqidah Akhlak (Islamic Creed and Ethics) and Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) materials, while the control group followed conventional methods. The results showed a significant improvement in conceptual understanding in the experimental group (Cohen's d = 1.38) compared to the control group. Qualitative analysis revealed important findings about the transformation of the teacher's role, the technology adaptation process, and AI integration models based on Islamic pedagogical principles such as tawazun (balance), tabayyun (verification), uswah (exemplary), and ta'awun (collaboration). The research results also showed that ChatGPT's effectiveness varied based on the type of material, with procedural materials such as Fiqh benefiting more compared to abstract conceptual materials such as Aqidah. This research contributes to the development of an integrative model of ChatGPT usage in Islamic education that enriches the learning experience while maintaining traditional values.

Abstract

This research explores the integration of technology in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and its influence on learning effectiveness in the modern era through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) combined with content analysis, examining data from accredited academic journals. The findings indicate that technology enhances pesantren learning through innovations such as e-learning platforms, digitization of kitab kuning (classical Islamic texts), modern administrative tools, and expanded da’wah outreach while facilitating collaborations with external institutions to strengthen infrastructure. However, challenges such as limited technological resources, low digital literacy, and concerns about the negative impacts of technology on students’ character persist. To address these issues, pesantren adopt strategies including digital literacy training, collaboration with external partners, the establishment of internal regulations, and a moderated approach to technology use, ensuring technological advancements align with Islamic values. This study contributes by providing a framework for balancing tradition and modernity, offering practical insights for policymakers and educators to optimize technology use in pesantren, empowering students to thrive in a globalized and interconnected world while preserving their cultural and religious essence.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning often encounters negative perceptions among students. This is because the learning model used is still conventional, resulting in a rigid and monotonous perception. Therefore, an adaptation using an innovative learning model is needed in order to attract student participation during the learning process. This study aims to examine more deeply the transformation of PAI learning using the model Active Deep Learner Experience (ADLX) and find out how it impacts Islamic Religious Education learning. Using the literature study method, the author collects sources from accredited journals as primary data in the study and analyzes them using content analysis. The results of the study indicate that the ADLX model is able to provide a significant impact in various aspects, including critical reasoning, character development, learning motivation, student involvement, academic achievement, and technology utilization. Not only that, the use of the ADLX model is able to change the direction of negative perceptions towards active and innovative Islamic Religious Education learning. This study is still limited to literature analysis without involving empirical testing in the field. For this reason, further research is needed to explore more deeply the implementation of the ADLX model in various educational institutions.

Abstract

The need for more engaging Hajj and Umrah education highlights the limitations of conventional methods, such as lectures and printed manuals, which often lack experiential and spiritual depth. While Virtual Reality (VR) has become increasingly common in education, its use in religious ritual training, particularly for Hajj and Umrah, remains largely underexplored. This study aims to develop immersive learning media that allow users to practice Hajj and Umrah rituals interactively. The development of the VR-Hajj application followed the Research and Development (R&D) model by Lee and Owens, which includes five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The validation process involved experts who assessed the media’s content, usability, and instructional design. Data were analyzed using inter-rater agreement to determine consistency among expert evaluations, with results showing a high level of agreement. The Content Validity Index (CVI) was also used to assess overall validity, yielding a strong score of 0.83. Experts gave the VR-Hajj media an average rating of 91.54%, confirming its effectiveness and instructional relevance. These findings support VR-Hajj as a promising tool for improving Hajj and Umrah preparation through immersive Islamic learning. The study also proposes a future framework integrating VR and metaverse technologies to enhance accessibility and engagement. To expand its impact, further research should explore strategic partnerships with Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) to help deliver VR-based religious education more widely and inclusively

Abstract

The increasing demand for Islamic boarding schools to deliver both religious and academic education has prompted curriculum integration efforts nationwide. However, previous studies have not fully addressed how pesantren practically implement this integration while maintaining educational quality. This study explores how Al-Ihsan Boarding School in Riau integrates the Diniyah Curriculum with the National Curriculum, focusing on implementation practices, challenges, and institutional responses. The main research problem centers on how pesantren can balance two different pedagogical frameworks within a limited time and capacity. Using a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis, data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving the Deputy Head of Curriculum and the Boarding School Leader. The data were analyzed thematically through stages of data condensation, categorization, interpretation, and verification. Findings reveal that integration enhances students’ competencies across both curriculum domains, yet faces challenges including contrasting instructional methods, time constraints, and varied student preparedness. To overcome these, Al-Ihsan has developed contextualized support strategies, such as study clubs and tutoring sessions, which help students adapt and succeed. This study contributes a context-specific model for curriculum integration in pesantren and recommends future research on broader institutional comparisons, as well as policy support for adaptive academic management in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly adopted in higher education, including in student character assessment. However, AI’s inability to capture spiritual aspects such as intention (niyyah), sincerity, and God-consciousness (taqwa) creates a gap between technological efficiency and the moral values of Islamic education. This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of AI-based character assessments in Islamic universities and propose a conceptual framework grounded in maqasid al-shariah. A descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological design was employed, involving 20 purposively selected students from five academic programs at the Ar-Risalah Institute of Islamic Studies, Riau. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings reveal students’ distrust toward AI’s fairness, particularly its failure to assess inner spiritual dimensions, and highlight the irreplaceable role of educators in moral guidance. The study concludes that AI should be ethically guided and embedded with Islamic values to ensure its compatibility with character education in faith-based institutions. A value-sensitive AI framework can help harmonize automation with spiritual integrity, allowing Islamic higher education to adopt digital technologies without compromising its sacred pedagogical mission.
