Abstract

Encounter of the East and the West due to such various interests as economic, political, scientific, cultural has been a major factor in the study of western scientists (Orientalists) about the East that produces a variety of works in the fields of archeology, history, literature, environment, customs, and Islamic studies. Meanwhile, resistance against Orientalism in the form of Occidentalism, as initiated by Hasan Hanafî, seems to be closely related to ?obsession? and hopes of someone who frustrated and dissatisfied with the condition of the world he has dealt with as the project of civilization he offered seemed to be too theoretical to be applied into the form of well established science. This is a fact that, unlike Orientalism that has born from strength, power, and has been then smoothly formed, Occidentalism was created by the East that was defeated and suffered from weakness and at the same time merely has an obsession. In spite of the impression, apparently, what has been attempted in Occidentalism is dismantling the text, another interpretation, and building a new, more proportional context.

Abstract

This article scrutinizes the concept of cosmology held by the Kasultanan Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat. The writer observes that the process of islamization in Java island has, more or less, influenced the mindset  of javanese people, including the people of Kasultanan Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat. Once islamized, the Sultanate has adapted islamic teachings and made them as a part of its cultural mindset. In this stage, the acculturation has been done succesfully. Such acculturation has subsequently influenced their view on cosmology, which is different from?and does not reflect?Hinduism?s and Buddhism?s cosmology. The use of title Senopati ing Alaga Sayidin Panatagama Khalîfatullah by the sultans of Yogyakarta clearly indicates that they respect the old concept. Since the advent of Islam, javanese culture, including the culture of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta, has been subsequently islamized.

Abstract

This article explores the study of Islam by an orientalist, Bryan S. Turner. This study aimed to: first, to uncover the things that underlie the history of thought and movement of Orientalism. Second, to determine the thought Bryan S. Turner about Islam, which is specifically intended as a corrective to the thesis produced by Max Weber about his interpretation of Islam. The results of the study reveal that historically Orientalism, or the oriental studies movement emerged in the 18th century. This movement is often associated as a movement that pretend to control and weaken the East, especially Islam. It is not without basis, since the emergence of Orientalism has led to intellectual arrogance by claiming the West as a measure of civilization, because the East presented only in accordance with the construction used by the West. Keywords: Orientalism, Orient, West, civilization.

Abstract

This article peeling Amin Abdullah?s thinking about integration and interconnection methods in studying religion. Amin Abdullah has a great project to reconcile between religion and science as part of an attempt to break the deadlock of the problems of the present. So from a variety of scientific disciplines was not just to a single entity attitude (arrogance of science: the only one that feels most right), isolated entities (of various scientific disciplines happen ?isolation? , no scolds greet each other), but rather to the interconnected entities (aware of the limitations of their respective disciplines, resulting in mutual cooperation and is willing to use his methods even though it comes from another clump of science). With the model of integration and interconnection, Amin Abdullah has been able to show that the religious sciences can greet each other with other general sciences, because in essence is one. That science is beneficial for human beneficiaries.

Abstract

This article will briefly discuss the problems of postmodern theology in the context of the relationship between God and nature. In this case, the author brings the conception of theistic naturalism in the view of classical theology of Islam. Theological conception of postmodernism (theistic naturalism) can be useful contributions to the refreshment of Islamic theology, particularly in the case af?âl al-?ibâd and its derivation. The concept of direct influence and indirect influence may help explain the intervention of God toward human beings without denying the law of causality, as the law that becomes standard of modern science. Nevertheless there are some things that need to be considered in this concept: Firstly, God is only the spirit of the universe, God has entrusted His power to the nature, and all the events occurred due to the co-creativity of God and nature. Secondly, God has no a direct influence on the external dimension, rather He is merely a Spirit of things who has influence on inner dimension.

Abstract

This article explores Sufism in the perspective of K.H. Idris Muhammad Jauhari. It will also reveal the patterns of his mystical thought. In this study, the author finds that: firstly, in the view of Kiai Jauhari, Sufism is an attempt to straighten out the intention of heart and to understand the essence of deeds conducted by human beings in order to live a life to reach its final destination in accordance with the will of the Creator. Secondly, the patterns of Kiai Jauhari?s mystical thought are: a). Sufism developed by Kiai Jauhari built on a tradition of tasawuf akhlâqî (consistency to maintain Islamic orthodoxy, humanist Sufism, activist and functional, dichotomous relationship pattern between the servant and the Lord as well as the urgency of dhikr Allâh in the spiritual journey toward the Lord), b). Sufism developed and offered by Kiai Jauhari is an effort to redefine and reorient so that Sufism in both theoretical and practical aspect is no longer positioned as being elitist, mystical, and individualist. Kiai Jauhari has developed inclusive Sufism, which is easily accessible by all people. Thirdly, according to Kiai Jauhari there are six steps to become a Sufi, are: îqân al-nafs (convincing one?s self), taqwîn al-niyyah (straightening intention), al-dirâsah wa al-istitlâ? (learning and studying), al-tafakkur wa al-tadabbur (thinking and contemplation), al-takhallî wa al-tahallî (emptying and filling), and al-tajallî (manifestation).

Abstract

This article is intended to scrutinize Seyyed Hosssein Nasr?s thought about the negative dimensions of modernity and put it into the problems of the world where the idea of materialism ends due to greed of modern people. Nasr?s aim is actually to save humanity from destructive elements of modernity due to the idea of materialism, although the traditional-ism project that he proposed has still looked for a momentum within human consciousness and that is not to neglect the sacred matter in under-standing their world. In a reflection of his traditionalism, Nasr presupposes the creation of a progressive world presented with self-awareness to the existence of the Absolute and the Infallible. Nasr believes that modern people could live with their idea of perennial philosophy that connects everything in this world into the realm of the sacred. Benefits of modernity, according to Nasr, will be tarnished if people deny every sacred matter.

Abstract

This article aims to introduce transpersonal psychology approach, especially its meeting point with the world of Sufism in Islam. The article tries to answer the following questions, are: 1) what is the difference between transpersonal psychology and other psycho-logical theories, and; 2) in what aspect transpersonal psychology shares a common ground with Sufism? The writer finds that there is a significant difference between transpersonal psychology and other psychological theories, especially psychoanalysis and behaviorism. Psychoanalysis emphasizes the deepest meaning of human behavior with a tendency to override the meaning of physical aspect. Behaviorism has been strongly influenced by pure science. In fact, research on the human psyche aspect cannot be done simply by applying pure science. Meanwhile, transpersonal psychology tries to fundamentally reinforce and develop human potential, both physical and mental aspects. Moreover, this approach reaches supernatural and spiritual aspects of human beings. The writer tends to argue that the common ground shared by the mystical aspects of the Western world, in the perspective of transpersonal psychology, and Sufism in Islam lays in the fact that each entity puts great emphasis on managing and increasing the spiritual aspect of human. Keywords: transpersonal psychology, tasawuf, common ground.
