Abstract

With the extremely easy access to information through online platform and the increasing numbers of internet users, people get abundant information both from valid and reliable sources and invalid and unreliable ones. Given the situation, the existence of hoaxes and fake news is inevitable and one of the methods to tackle the spreading of fake news is by increasing students' literacy level, especially in recognizing news validity and reliability. In order to increase one's literacy level, some extensive hours of reading are required so that they are exposed to news and later become quality news literate. Media Literacy Project becomes a strategy to introduce the characteristics of hoaxes and fake news and this strategy is implemented in Critical Reading course, whose objectives are to distinguish facts from opinions, draw conclusions from written material based on knowledge, experience, logic and awareness of the source validity and reliability, and develop and practice critical reading skills necessary for success in content area courses by interpreting, evaluating, and applying the knowledge to understanding the reading content and context. This research tries to examine the significance of readers' literacy level in recognizing information validity and reliability and to analyze how Media Literacy Project could increase students' literacy level and their awareness of fake news and hoaxes written by some news portals

Abstract

This study aimed to discover the students' perception of an iconic model for mobile assisted language learning. The Android application was developed to help nursing students who learn English for Specific Purposes (ESP) especially speaking. The data were obtained quantitatively. The instrument used was questionnaires which were distributed in two stages of the development process. The first was during the preliminary study and the second was distributed in the implementation stage. The result showed that the students perceived that the navigation pane, the screen design, the information presented, the media integration, and the overall functionality are good (4.1) out of the maximal score (5.00). In conclusion, SPINE application is also efficient and acceptable for the users in terms of its navigation pane, screen design information presentation, media integration, and overall functionality.

Abstract

There were problems that the researcher found in the teaching and learning process of English Structure class of Bandar Lampung University related to the learners’ assumption, method, and medium used. Based on the problems found in English Structure class of Bandar Lampung University, the writer chose the media using Kahoot! as a solution.  Kahoot! is one of techniques that can can be applied to the learners which is expected to affect the classroom dynamics and facilitate the learning process. The objectives of this research are to know how aplication of kahoot! Affect classroom dynamics and facilitating learning prices. The research method used in this research was classroom action research. One of the functions of classroom action research is to find the learners’ main problem and give solution for the problem. The research was carried out in two cycles. Every cycle include plan, action, observation, and reflection. The data of the research were qualitative. The qualitative data obtained by observing the teaching and learning process and interviewing the learners of Structure I class. The data were also obtained by giving questionnaire to support the data. Based on the observation in the classroom and interview the learners, they showed a great enthusiasm even though some problems appeared because of the capacity of internet connection. When observation was carried out, the learners enjoyed their activities using Kahoot! in the classroom. The atmosphere in the classroom was positive where they felt comfortable and relaxed to communicate with other learners and also with the researcher. It also can be seen from the result of the questionnaire.  The result of the research showed that the application of Kahoot! affected the classroom dynamics and facilitated the learning process in the teaching and learning activity. The researcher also expects that Kahoot! can assist English teacher in preparing interesting learning material and making it as alternative in creative learning.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the influence of homework on students’ reading skill at the eleventh grade students of SMA Al Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung Academic year 2016/2017. Homework was used to help students understanding in Reading skill. By giving homework to the students, they will have more time in understanding the text. The data were collected by giving two pre-test and post-test to experimental and control group. The treatment was giving homework in reading text in every meeting for experimental group while in control group students just doing class work. Data analysis was attempted by using T-test for two-group design.The result indicate that p-value 0.05 = 1.9944, 0.01 = 2.6479 and t-value = 3.09. It means that p-value is smaller than t-value. Therefore, hypothesis testing showed that null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Thus, the students achievement of giving homework are higher that the students’ achievement of doing class work. It can be concluded that giving homework to the students was influence their reading skill. By giving homework to the students’ reading skill, they have more time in understanding the text. In the other hand, the teacher should have coordination in giving homework, so the students will not feel frustrated because usually they have a lot of home work every night.

Abstract

This research is based on the researcher’s experience as a student of college in learning English. Most of the students were got failed in motivation to read in class, it happened because we used to give a reading text that we don’t know and we don’t like it. It make us become lazy to read the material of reading text which is given because of lack of motivation that happened. In the end we often can’t get the point of the idea of the reading text that given and felt that the problems have influenced our reading rate become stuck, or there are no improvements. The researcher chose a method extensive reading to overcome the problem. This research is aimed to know how the improvement of extensive reading approach on the reading motivation, reading rate in the third semester student of English Department Universitas Bandar Lampung studying English as a foreign language. The students’ motivation and reading rate improved after the implementation of extensive reading. By this method the students were asked to inculate reading habits behaviour, so the students like reading more and motivated to read than before. This research was qualitative mthod using three indicators observation, questionnaire and interview. The subject of research consisted of 41 students of the third semester students of English Department Universitas Bandar Lampung. The result showed that extensive reading method could motivate the students to get better achievement in reading. Such as: extensive reading helped them improve their reading rate and motivation to read.

Abstract

This research aimed to know how the role group discussion in improving students’ vocabulary mastery at SMA Persada Bandar Lampung. This research was qualitative method which used triangulation method – observation, questionnaire, and interview. The researcher also gave activity for students to strengthen the result of triangulation data. This subject of research was consisted of 24 students of X.2 at SMA Persada Bandar Lampung.The result showed that the highest percentage 62.5% strongly agree was about ‘active participant’ as indicator which made improvement for students’ vocabulary. Students felt active while they were having group discussion. On the other hand, the result also showed the students’ social skill development in during group discussion. Some students said they could share their opinion with their friends. It meant that the role of group discussion could give influence to students’ vocabulary in learning English at SMA Persada Bandar Lampung. In conclusion, the role of group discussion was very helpful in learning.

Abstract

This research described the use of TED Talks to improve students’ pronunciation. Moreover, it was to find outwhether TED Talks is effective to improve students’ pronunciation at the twelfth grade students of SMKMuhammadiyah Way Sulan. This research used experimental design in which attitudes were assessed both beforeand after an experimental treatment. The subject of the research was consisted of 60 students, they were dividedinto experimental and control group. The instruments used for collecting data were test which was consisted ofpretest and posttest. The data analysis of this research was attempted by using independent sample T-test whichwas calculated through computing with Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20. The resultindicated that the students’ mean score of experimental and control group in posttest were significantly different.It showed that t-count was higher than t-table (10,706 > 2,002) and the sig. 2-tailed value was lower than sig. level(0.000 > 0.05). Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.It meant that there was effective impact of using TED Talks towads students’ pronunciation. In conclusion, usingTED Talks as a media was effective to improve students’ pronunciation. Therefore, it was suggested the use ofTED Talks as a media in teaching English generally and teaching pronunciation particularly.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the difference between be going to and be about to using data from BYU-BNC corpus. In future tense, there are several kinds of modals. Among them are will, be going to and be about to. In general, most people use will and be gpoing to. However, they do not yet know that there is one kind of modal in the future tense that is be about to. In fact, the use of be going to and be about to is different. In this research, I use online dictionaries and corpus data. In this study, I used qualitative description and corpus data. An online dictionary is selected because the results in can be the recent results. Meanwhile, the selection of corpus as data collection because the corpus can provide an example of the data we seek in accordance with everyday life. From the first 100 lines in the corpus in each phrase will be selected with the same verb. Then, the data is translated to get the meaning of each sentence and determine the function of both phrases. The results of this study indicate that the use of be going to and be about to can be used to express about what will happen in the future. However, there are some functional differences between the two phrases. Be going to can be used to declare someone’s intention to do something. It can also be used to declare or expect what will happen in the future. Meanwhile, be about to is used to express about what is closed to happen. In the form of a negative sentence, not to be about to can be used to declare that we have no intention or unwillingness to do anything.

Abstract

This research is based on the researcher’s pre-survey on the implementation of reading stories towards children. Young children have an extraordinary ability to record what they have heard. The purpose is also to increase their intelligence and to prepare the children for language learning before they are ready to study at school. During the reading activity, the mothers do not force the children to do any activity. They just observed the children’s development while reading activities and help them increase their language acquisition. The aims of this research are to see the children’s language acquisition process, to identify how storybook is being read by the parents, and also to know the advantages of reading story to young children. Language development is one of the indicators of overall development for children's cognitive ability related to their success in their study. The result showed that reading stories to children can help parents to prepare their children before they are ready to study at school. Reading story to children with bilingual books also increases children’s language acquisition because during the reading activity they got some new vocabularies related to the story. The result showed that the children have different methods and strategies in learning from the story. During the reading process, the mother gives some definition related to the story and read with clear intonation and gestures.

Abstract

This qualitative of this research aim at describing the use of digital storytelling narrative text to improve students speaking ability at grade ten in Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri Bandar Lampung academic year 2017/2018 by using some instruments such as observation, questionare and speaking test. Based on experience of almost all students at grade ten in Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 2 Bandar Lampung has not used digital storytelling therefore the teacher as facilitator provides this one good media which is digital storytelling. Digital storytelling is effective to improve on speaking ability. It is proved that the students became more confident, they speak fluently, the students also produce more correct sentences, correct pronunciation, and more vocabularies. The result of this research show there is an increase of students respond, motivation, and interest in the learning process using digital storytelling. It is concluded that the used of digital storytelling narrative text can improve students’ speaking ability at grade ten of SMA N 2 Bandar Lampung. The implementation of using digital storytelling improves students speaking ability.
