Abstract

The study aims at finding out the influence of students learning styles and teachers teaching style on the students English achievement at senior high schools of Tulang Bawang Regency in Lampung Province. The number students recruited as the sample for the study was 1038 and the number of teachers recruited as the sample was 70 teachers. Two sets of questionnaires each for learning style and teaching style were given. Students learning styles are categorized into: a) con-ununicative, b) concrete, authority-oriented, d) analytic, and e). undecided. Teachers styles are categorized into:a) expert, b) formal authority, c) personal model, d) facilitator, and e) delegator.The results show that there is no significant influence of students learning styles on their achievement of English subject, while teaching style has a significant effect on the students achievement. There is a tendency that students at senior high school in Tulang Bawang prefer teachers who apply formal authority style than teachers with other styles, but students who got better achievements are those were taught by teachers with expert and facilitator styles.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan pengaruh gaya belajar siswa dan gaya mengajar guru terhadap prestasi Bahasa Inggris siswa SMA di Kabupaten Tulang Bawang. Jumlah siswa yang direkrut sebagai sample adalah 1038 siswa sedanagkan guru yang terlibatberjumlah 70 prang. Dua perangkat kuesioner masing-masingZ~untuk gaya belajar siswa dan gaya mengajar guru diberikan kepada sample penelitian. Gaya belajarsiswa dikategorikan sebagai: a) siswa komunikatif, b) siswa kongkrit, e) siswa berorientasi kekuasaan, d). siswa analitik, dan e) siswa campuran. Gaya guru dikategorikan sebagai: a) guru expert, b) guru formal authority, c) guru personal model, d) guru .facilitator, dan e) gui-it delegator.Hasil penelitian rnelILl uj ukkan bahwa tidak ada pengaruh yang signi I ikan antara gaya belajar siswa dengan prestasi belajar Bahasa Inggris mereka, sedangkan gaya mengajar guru berpengaruh secara signifikan terhadap prestasi belajar Bahasa Inggris siswa. Ada kecenderungan siswa SMA di Kabupaten Tulang BawangTulangleiluii menyukai guru yang memiliki gaya formal authority daripada gaya lainnya, tetapi siswa yang prestasi Bahasa Inggrisnya balk adalah mereka yang diajar oleh guru expert danfilcilaitator.

Abstract

This study compares patterns of interactions among teachers and students in all English speaking class by using three different newspaper topics: political, economy and entertainment. The subject of the research was 31 students of a senior high school in Bandar Lampung.The result shows that three were differences in the patterns of interaction when learners were given three different newspaper article topics. The differences were found in terms of the patterns of interactions among teacher-students, and students- students as well at kinds of interactional contribution categories.This suggests that using various topics from various sources of materials provided good stimulus for learners to practice their English in the classroom. The closer the topic to the learners daily interest the more they will likely to actively involve in the interactions.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to describe how to make lesson plan, implementation, evaluation system, reflect the word guessing game for increasing motivation and students speaking skill.The study used the model of Classroom Action Research. It was conducted in three cycles. The first cycle was a big group discussion (classical), second cycle was a small group discussion, third cycle was a pair. To obtain the research data, it was used some instruments, A13KG 1, the observation of students activities, students motivation , evaluation system and students speaking skill test.The conclusions of the study are: 1) there were improvement in lesson plan quality, the first cycle was score 2,80 (poor category ), second cycle was score 3,80 (average, )third cycle was score 4,20 (good ), 2) at the first cycle, student was active 55% in social one and in social two 68%, second cycle, in social one increased 80% and in social two 82%, third cycle, in social one increased 100% and social two 100% , 3) evaluation system of the students speaking skill was implemented by pre-test and post- test, pre-test validity was 0,89, reliability was 0,91, post-test validity was 0,84, reliability was 0,80, 4) students motivation in social one average 25%, high motivation 41% and average 40%, high motivation 59% in social two, second cycle increased average motivation in social one 15%, high motivation 75% and social two average motivation 18% high motivation 77%, third cycle increased average motivation 22%, high motivation 77%,5) students speaking skill in social one increased 35% (40% became 75%) and in social two 36,5% (45,5% became 82%).

Abstract

Modalitas adalah sikap pembicara atas keterlibatannya terhadap kebenaran proposisi tuturannya. Sikap ini bisa dimarkahi dengan pemarkah leksikal yang berbeda yaitu dalam bentuk kata, frasa, atau klausa. Modalitas ada dalam tataran semantik yang berarti  bisa muncul dalam semua bahasa dengan bentuk pengungkapnya masing masing. Modalitas bisa dinilai dan diukur berdasarkan perangkat prinsipyang dikemukakan oleh Perkins. Dengan perangkat prinsip inilah subkategori modalitas semua bahasa bisa diamati, dinilai, dan diukur. Melalui perangkat prinsip ini, serta ditambah teori-teori lain dari Perkins, Palmer, Coates, dan Quirk et al dan Alwi subkategori modalitas Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Indonesia didiskripsikan

Abstract

This research is intended to (I) to observe the process types used in this articles, (2) to investigate the circumstances typed described in this article, (3) to know the participants involved in the text and (4) to disclose the relationship between the text and the social context. in order to answer the aforementioned questions, the writer uses a descriptive qualitative (naturalistic) design, and the data of this study were taken from the samples of newspaper article entitled "Courtroom Quarrel Marks Student Protesters Trial" written in The Jakarta Post, Thursday, October 16, 2008). The text is analyzed using Functional Grammar Analysis (by analyzing the theme and rheme and the transitivity elements). The results indicated that the text is dominantly numbered by the material process explaining that doing words are very dominant, whereas, the types of participants involved are ranged from specific legal context such as lawyer, defendant, witness, the court, the trials, the officials, etc. The writer of the text seems to show that in Indonesia, the power relation between the new order era and the reformed era has changed in a number of aspects.

Abstract

Listening comprehension is the first skill that students should master, because before someone understands and starts to speak, lie or she has to hear sounds, words, or speech pattern. Listening is considered as a difficult language skill since it involves some aspects of the language, for example, vocabulary, understanding the sound, grammar, getting, the mainL_ understandingidea, specific information and reference. The teaching of listening in formal schools is still considered unsuccessful for that it tends to make students boring. Therefore, English teachers should provide more challenging and interesting listening activities. Teaching listening withZ7short stories is said to be one of the way to reduce students boredom and to increase students listening comprehension.For the above reasons, this research was intended to find out whether there was significant improvement of students listening comprehension in short stories after being taught through top - down approach. This research was done in a group pretest posttest design. The population of this research was the eleventh grade in SMA YP UN ILA Bandar Lampung. The sample of this research was XI IPA I and was selected by using random sampling technique. In collecting the data, the researcher administered the pretest, the treatments and posttest. The data was analyzed by using repeated measure t-test. In which the significance was determined by p<0.05. The result of t-test computation showed that (-ratio was higher than t-table (t,>t,.J, that is, (29.330>2.021), it can be concluded that there was a significant improvement of students listening comprehension after being taught short stories through top - down approach. This means that teaching listening through short stories in a top-down approach was applicable to improve sttideiitslistening omprehension ability.

Abstract

This experimental study used two groups, randomized subjects, posttest-only design. It was conducted to know whether Child-Centered method is more effective, more efficient, and more enjoyable than Teacher-Centered method in teaching English to elementary school students. Thirty students taken randomly from the population were randomly grouped into one experimental group and one controlled group, consisting of 15 students each. The experimental group was taught using Child-Centered method, while the control group was taught using Teacher-Centered method, by the same teacher, using the same material.Observation and interview were done during the research process to collect the data about studentss feeling. Post-test was given after 10 meeting (treatments) to know the learning result. The t-test analysis to the data indicates that Child-Centered method is more effective, more efficient, and more enjoyable than Teacher-Centered method in teaching English to the fourth grade of elementary school students in SD Negeri 1 Beringin Raya, Kemiling, Bandar Lampung.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether there was any significant improvement of the students’ vocabulary achievement at the eighth grade of SMP Tunas Harapan, Kedaton, Bandar Lampung after they were taught by using pictured stories and to investigate the process of teaching vocabulary by using pictured stories. This research used one group pre test post test design. The sample of this research was VIII A at Tunas Harapan, Kedaton, Bandar Lampung, in academic year 2010/2011. Objective vocabulary test was used as the instrument of the research. The data were analyzed by using repeated measure t- test in which the significance was determined by p<0.05. The result suggested that the difference of the mean score from pretest and posttest was 16.4. Under SPSS test, the difference was significant, in which the p value was 0.000, which was less than 0.05. This indicates the significant improvement of students vocabulary achievement. In addition the teaching learning process using pictured stories indicates that can improve the students involvement and students activeness in the process of teaching learning vocabulary.

Abstract

Online discussion forum is well-known in educational technology development especially in blended learning because it supports the traditional face to face (f2f) classroom. Moreover, online discussion forum is familiar as the leading of critical thinking process. Therefore, this present study is intended to analyze the influence of critical thinking to help improving speaking skill of the first semester students in Universitas Bandar Lampung.To achieve the goal, online discussion forum is provided to promote critical thinking through Schoology platform. A qualitative approach is employed to analyze the data. Observation, interview, and questionnaire are conducted to see the influence of critical thinking process during online discussion forum, and the influence of critical thinking to improve students‟ speaking skill. The finding indicates that the use of online discussion forum can promote students‟ critical thinking, and the students can perform better in the f2f classroom.

Abstract

Students have been equipped with technology at their fingertips. They can easily access information anytime and anywhere, as long as the internet connection is available. With the availability of mobile devices in their hands, students can learn better with the aid of Google Classroom. Using Google Classroom can promote their autonomy as this platform helps students to interact, negotiate, and decide the learning process. The study aims to discover students' perspective on the use of Google Classroom in English class among the students of Department of Islamic Economics, Islamic University of Indonesia. The study shows that students enjoy the learning process using this platform. Student-teacher interaction runs pretty well; additionally, feedback on assignments given can also be conducted real time. However, students see that problems, like, unstable internet connection and appropriate instructions on the material’s discussed are points that have to be solved in the coming courses
