Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the kinds of offenses motivating the characters to express apologies in the film entitled “Princess Diaries 2”, to know how the characters express their apologies and  to reveal why the characters use the ways to express apologies as a politeness strategy. The phenomena of verbal (words or utterances), non-verbal actions supporting apologies and intonation in apologizing expressed by the characters in the film entitled “Princess Diaries 2” are taken as the samples. There are six kinds of offences found in the film “Princess Diaries 2” that motivate the characters to express apologies. They are deception, infringement on possession, infringements on talk, instances of inconvenience, social behavior offences, and infringement on time. The addresser performs apologies with simple or complex form. The apology strategies appearing in the data are direct apology (expression of regret and request of forgiveness), acknowledgment, expression of lack of intend, self-deficiency and expression of embarrassment, giving explanation or account, minimizing the degree of the offence, expression of  concern to the offended, promise of forbearance and offer of repair. Furthermore, the addressers also express their apology with direct or indirect apology. Apology can also be perceived as positive politeness strategy since there is an expression of concern to the offended. Tone of voice and facial expression also support the performance of the act of apologizing expressed by the characters. Keywords: apologies, politeness, sociopragmatic

Abstract

This article discusses the characteristics of the Goddesses of Greek Mythology through the symbols in Rita Dove’s “Demeter Waiting” and “Persephone, Falling”. The aim of this article is to analyze the symbols dealing with the characteristics of the Goddesses of Greek Mythology in Rita Dove’s “Demeter Waiting” and “Persephone, Falling.” The technique that is used to collect the data is library research. The data consists of the ideas related to the characteristics of the Goddesses of Greek Myhtology that are symbolized through Rita Dove’s poems. The theory of meaning, symbol, and character were applied in this research. Moreover, the approches that were used are structural aproach, sociological approach, moral approach, and philosophycal approach. The result of thsi article is on Demeter’s characteristics which are describe as they are being passionate in teaching her daughter, being maternal, and being protective by sacrificing herself for Persephone. Next, it also tells about Persephone’s characteristics, that is, unadorned, stubbrn, and unstable emotionally. Furthermore, by analyzing the characteristics and the symbols of those goddesses, the researcher knows that their characteristics represent mother and daughter relationship in which they always protect each other. Abstract

This study discussed English idioms and their renderings. It focused on the strategies used in translating idioms and their renderings fidelity. This research was descriptive in nature. The data were obtained from a novel written by Stephenie Meyer entitled Twilight and the rendering in Indonesian under the same title translated by Lily Devita Sari. The population of this research was all of the sentences containing English idioms within Twilight and the renderings in the Indonesian version of the novel. To get the sample, this research applied total sampling. Therefore, all of the data were analyzed one by one. To judge the strategy used by the translator, translational equivalent method was applied. Likewise, to search the fidelity of the renderings, translational equivalent method was also applied. Based on the strategy used, most idioms in the novel were translated by paraphrase (87 idioms) and only a few idioms were translated by using idioms of the same meaning and dissimilar form (2 idioms). Due to the fidelity of the renderings, most idioms in the novel were translated faithfully by adhering the meaning fidelity (67 idioms). Some other idioms, however, were translated unfaithfully (20 idioms). Key Words : idioms, translation, fidelity.

Abstract

This  study  is  related  to  the  characteristics  and  character  development  of  the  main character in Alice Walker‟s The Color Purple, Celie. There are two objectives of the study namely, (1) to find out Celie‟s characteristics, (2) to explain Ceie‟scharacter development in the novel. It is a descriptive research with the novel The Color Purple as the main source of data. The data were collected through library study and internet browsing. This research made use of the theories of character, characterization, psychology, personality, and personality development. Moreover, sociological and psychological approaches were applied to analyze the data. The data analysis shows as follows: (1) Celie‟s characteristics include weakness, patience, obedience, and lovability, (2) Celie‟s character development causes Celie to be a cheerful, brave, and hard worker woman.   Key Words : Characteristic, Character Development, Characterization

Abstract

Abstract This research focuses on swear words found in Fast and Furious Movie Series. The aims of this research are to describe the kinds of swear words, the users of swear words and the purposes of uttering swear words. Pragmatic equivalent method is used to describe the kinds of swear words, the users of swear words and the purposes of uttering swear words. In getting the data, the researcher used field research. The data were taken from movie series entitled Fast and Furious; The Fast and The Furious (2001), 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), The Fast and The Furious Tokyo Drift, Fast and Furious (2009), Fast Five (2011) and Furious 6 (2013). The result of the analysis showed that there were 135 data of swear words based on Hughes’s classifications; they were swear words related to sex (20 items), swear words related to excrement (51 items), swear words related to name of animal (13 items), swear words related to personal background (6 items), swear words related to sexual activity (4 items), swear words related to taboo or religion or oath (38 items) and swear words related to mental illness (3 items). Moreover, the users of swear words are elaborated in the basis of Holmes’s classifications. There were two aspects which influence the users of swear words. The first was the users of swear words based on age. It was divided into swear words which were uttered by youngsters (117 items) and swear words which were uttered by old generation (18 items). The second was the users of swear words based on gender and occupation. It was divided into swear words which were uttered by men (121 items) and swear words which were uttered by women (14 items). Furthermore, the purposes of uttering swear words are categorized based on Eric Partridge’s classifications. They were swear words used to express anger (87 items), swear words used to degrade or put down (10 items), swear words used to express a response of shock (3 items), swear words used to express protest (9 items), swear words used to express intimacy (5 items) and the last classification was swear words used to identify a certain profession (21 items). Abstract

Abstract This article discusses about the drama, The Respectful Prostitute, written by Jean-Paul Sartre. It also talks about the oppression experienced by Lizzie in the drama, The Respectful Prostitute, written by Jean-Paul Sartre. This article has two purposes: (1) describe how Lizzie was oppressed in the drama The Respectful Prostitute written by Jean-Paul Sartre, (2) describes the effects experienced by Lizzie after the persecution. This article uses the theory of feminism, radical feminism and woman oppression, while the approaches are the psychological approach and sociological approach. This analysis proves that Lizzie had been oppressed by white people, namely: Fred, Thomas, and Senator. This is proved when Lizzie suffered physical violence such as rape trials conducted by Fred and Thomas. Second, when Lizzie was forced to sign a letter that contains a false statement that Thomas did not kill The Negro.   Key Words: Woman oppression, Radical feminism, Feminism

Abstract

Abstract This writing discusses violation of maxims of conversation in the serial comics entitled Dilbert. The comics themselves are short and daily comics which present the conversation among the employees in a company. In addition, the events which happen in the comics were actually taken from Scott Adam’s personal experiences. The research focuses on the kinds of violation of maxim of conversation and the purpose of the violation. Generally, this research is included in descriptive study. In this research, the procedures done are collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. The entire data of this research were taken from serial comics entitled Dilbert written by Scott Adam. Then, the unit of analysis of this research is the whole conversations which represent violation of maxim of conversation. Furthermore, total sampling was applied to obtain the required samples. Consequently, the researcher had to analyze the sample one by one. To analyze the data, the researcher used referential equivalent method to classify the kind of violated maxim of conversation and pragmatic equivalent method to reveal the purposes of it. Based on the analysis, the highest violation of maxim of conversation is in the violation of maxim of manner by 36 data. Furthermore, violation of maxim of quality is in the lowest position by 5 data only. Meanwhile, the writer discovers that representative dominates the purpose of the characters in violating the maxims of conversation by 37 amounts of data. Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the metaphor dealing with human nature in thepoem “A Poison Tree”, and to reveal the metaphor constituting the human naturein the poem. This is a library research in which all the data and the theories weretaken from written forms including internet browsing. The theories used in thisstudy are the theories of figures of speech, metaphor, meaning and symbol.Moreover, structural approach, formalistic approach and psychological approachare applied to decide the strategy in analyzing the metaphor and symbols found inthe poem. The analysis shows that: (1) there are two metaphor of human natureanalyzed in this research, they are metaphor related to feeling and metaphorrelated to human characteristics. Metaphor related to characteristics is divided intotwo main discussions namely individual and social creatures. Furthermore, thereare two symbols of human nature namely anger and karma.

Abstract

Teaching language consists of some aspects as the important part of transfering the knowledge and skill such as the skill of the lecturers to manage the process of teaching and learning as they play an important roles, choosing the methods or strategies, and designing the goal of the study. All their targets are based on how well they colaborate the methods and designs through the experiences and knowledge they have during the process of teaching and learning. Communication Games was chosen to know the effectiveness, advantages, disadvantages, streghts, and weaknesses  in improving the speaking skill of the second semester students of English Department of Madiun State Polytechnic. The qualitative and quantitative data were used in this research. Qualitative data were taken from the scores of the pre-test and all cycles. The qauntitative data were taken through the observation, interview, and questionnaire. Based on the discussions and conclusions, communication games is recomended to improve the speaking skill of the second semester students of English Department of Madiun State Polytechni.

Abstract

This research focuses on taboo terms found in Mike Lacher’s On the Bro’d. Theaims of this research are to describe the kinds of taboo terms and their usage. Thisresearch uses descriptive method which involves the following steps: collecting,classifying, and analyzing the data. Library research is used as technique of datacollecting. The population of this research is all of the terms and phrasescontaining taboo terms. The data of the research are analyzed one by one,therefore, the total sampling is applied. Referential equivalent method is used todetermine the kinds of taboo terms. Meanwhile, pragmatic equivalent method isused to analyze the purpose of using taboo terms. Due to the kinds of taboo termsfound in the novel, the taboo terms include religion taboo terms, disease, deathand killing, bodily excretion taboo terms, personal name, sexual organ, sexualactivity, gender identity, and mental illness. The mostly used taboo term in thenovel is sexual taboo term while the least is disease, death and killing. In terms ofthe purposes of their usage taboo terms are used to express anger, surprise, curseor wish harm, habitual epithets, insult, joke or humor, sex talk, and slang. Amongthem, insult is the most intended purpose which occurs in the novel; whereas,slang is the least.
