Abstract

The resistance of five wood species originated frim west java were evaluated using DIN52176-modified standard.wood sample were divided into two groups radially,namely outer andInner parts of log.results showed that bengkal wood(nauclea orientalis L.). mindi (melia dubiacav.)and biantaro(cerbera sp.) were moderately resistant against several fungal attack (class III).whereas .jaran (lannea coromandclica merr.) and waru (hibiscus tiliaceus L.)were not resistant (class IV). Weigtht loss percentage of the inner part of log was lower than that of the auter part.the highest weight los was encountered on the inner part of jaran exposed tocorioulus versicolor culture (52.26%).while the lowest was found on the inner part of waru exposed to pycnoporus sanguincus HHB-8149 (0.53%) the most severe attacks were perfomed by corilus versicolor.followed by pycnoporus sanguineus HHB-324,tyroyces palustri,and polyporus sp.

Abstract

The  result of gasification study using Albazia falcataria and  Eucalyptus deglupte wood is reported  in this paper,  using fluidized bed system   with an  air flow rate  varied  between   2,8  -  4.0  m3/hr.  air factor   between  0.22  -  0.34   and  bed  temperature    ranging  from 742 - 895ᵒC.The aim of the  study  is to  obtain   the best  treatment   is the  proses of fluidized bed.  The  result  shows that the gascous product (%.  Volume ) for  Albazia falcateria Varies from 51.81 -  61.94 %  (N2),  0.16-0,75  %  (O2), 13.52- 19.13  %  (CO2),  10.05 -  13.00  % (CO) , 4.19  - 6.41  %  (H2) ,  2. 2 7 -  5. 87  %  (CH4).   The figures  for   Eucalyptus deglupta were  54. 55  -  58; 06  %  (N2)  , 0.14  - 0. 18  % O2), 16.09-   18.81   % (COz), 11. 22 - 13.06  % (CO) , 7. 72 - 9. 73 (H2),  3.83 - 4.93  %  (CH4).in addition   C2H4 and C2H6 gas  were produced  in small  quantity from   each  species.

Abstract

Marine  borers are wood destroying  organisms  living in the sea, brackish  and estuarine  water. Environmental   conditions  such as salinity, pollution  and temperature  of  the sea water influence  the activities  and precence  of  marine  borers.One hundred pieces of wood from  five  species had been exposed  to marine borers in four  different  salinities for  nine months. The test sites chosen were around  Gulf  of Jakarta  i.e.  about 3 km off  shore, and at three  locations  along  a canal of  brackish fishpond,  respectively  in the estuary,  1  km  and 2 km from the shore.The result shows that at the sea site where the salinity  is relatively stable around 29 ‰ – 30‰ ,  all of the wood tested are badly attacked  by Mollusc  belonging  to the species of Martesia  striata  Linne.,  Dicyathifer  manni  Wright.,  and  Bankia  campanellata  Moll/Roch.    Along  the canal where the salinity is between 5‰-30‰, damage is only small.  The result also shows no sign of attack on all samples exposed  along the canals, although  the salinity is not significantly  different  from that of  the estuary.

Abstract

Urea formaldehyde resin is an adhesive for interior plywood manufacturing. Some materials can be added to the resin to reduce the glue utilization. This paper describes a study on the effect of extender addition to urea formaldehyde resin on the bonding strength of kapur (Dryobalanops sp.) plywood. This research used cassava flour and its dextrin as an extender with 3 percentage levels of extender i.e.: 10 %, 30%, and 50% based on weight of liquid resin. Each extender type has refinement of 100 and 200 mesh.The results showed that the effect of extender type on plywood bonding strength was not significant, while the percentage of extender has highly significant effect on the plywood bonding strength. The higher the extender percentage the lower the plywood bonding strength. Cassava flour 30% and its dextrin for extender meet the Japanese standard.

Abstract

This report deals with assessing the performance of  tusam (Pinus merkusii Jungh et de Vries)  log - removal using particular skyline system.  The assessment in this regard is pointed out by the aim of this study, i.e.   observing the productivity and operation cost of such removal.Related with those cases, investigation has been conducted and located in Cikajang Sub Forestry District,  Garut Forest District,  under the Indonesian State Forest Enterprise in West Java.  The  topographical location has a slope at about 5° - 50°  with altitude ranging around 900 - 1000 m above sea level.  The skyline machine used was a yarder manufactured in Japan with the brand name as "IWAFUJI" and engine power at115 HP.  The harvesting or removal of tusam  log was done using a clear-cutting system.The result revealed that the removal productivity varied from 25.07  to 43.17  m3  hm per hour with average at 33.33  m3 hm per hour. Meanwhile,  the corresponding production cost was Rp.  16,879.3 per m3.   It turned out that such productivity (Y) was significantly affected by real removal frequency  (X),  which further could be expressed in regression equation Y = 1.0659  + 0.1245 X (r=0.5852)  with F-calc = 4.15 greater than F-table = 2.1).  The opening soil was 5 percent.

Abstract

The computer simulation programs for increasing lumber recovery are presented  in this paper.  These programs  were created for sawing logs with live sawing,  half sawing, and semi-quarter  sawing patterns, and convening  the sawn limber into blanks using turbo basic language version  1, 1.  The log model used was a truncated cylinder to represent the real logs.The  best opening  first (BOF) of logs is computed  by entering data of log factors such as diameter  and  length,  and sawing factors such as saw kerf, sawn limber thickness, allowance for sawing thickness, blank width, and allowance for sawing width.For several runs on computer under any circumtances  the program produced nominal lumber and blank recovery ranging 73-76 %  and 83 - 89 %, respectively, the values of shrinkage allowance,  planing allowance and sawing  variation have been  included in nominal lumber recovery.

Abstract

Females of ambrosia beetle Xyleborus sp., one of the most destructive wood boring insects on lone logs (Pinus merkusii), were reared on rubberwood sawdust base media. The media were frepared in test tubes and one famale pertube was then introduced. These cultures were maintained in a dark room at 28°C and 70 % RH for 40 days. Observations were made for number of branches and length of galleries system through the tube walls, and number of progenies produced by the beetles after the media were dissected.It was shown that of the 22 culture tubes, 18 tubes were developed. Most of the beetles extensively tunneled to and fro criss-cross within the media. Mean branch number and gallery length were 16. 7 junction and 46.4 cm tracks ranging 0 - 33 and 0 - 52 respectively. The average of progeny number was 47.9 per tube with one male for about 14. 7 females. It seemed that both number of branches and length of galleries system indicatively correspond to the level of the beetle fecundity.

Abstract

This study   is intended   to recognize  the  behaviour  and  infestation   rate  of  marine  borers. Forty  samples  of pine  wood,  measuring  120  cm  x  5 cm x 5 cm,. vertically  floated  at Ram but Island seashore.  These samples  are divided   in  to  three  section:    top,  midle  and  bottom.    The observation   were carried out  after  1,  2,  3 and  6 months    by  splitting   the  sample.The results  showed  that  the  infestation   started  from  the bottom   upwards.  The length  and diameter  of the burrow  is controlled    to  a  certain  extent    by  the  intensity   of  the  borer population    in  the  wood.   When crowded,   the  borer  may grow  only  a few  cm.   After six  months   of  experiment,    the  infestation   rate of  samples  showed   the following   regression equation;  i.e,  top section  Y 1=   0, 134 (X)2,375,   milde section   Y2= 2,569  (X)1,113   and bottom  section  Y 3=  3,334  (X)0,142.

Abstract

Bio-oil adalah bahan bakar berbentuk cair berwarna kehitaman yang berasal dari biomasa seperti kayu, kulit kayu dan biomasa lainnya dari limbah kehutanan dan industri hasil hutan melalui teknologi pirolisis. Bio-oil dapat digunakan di dalam industri  sebagai bahan bakar untuk boiler atau bahan bakar langsung untuk tujuan pengeringan, seperti minyak bakar. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mendapatkan informasi teknik pembuatan bio-oil dengan bahan baku serbuk gergaji sengon menggunakan proses pirolisis lambat (slow pyrolysis).  Pada proses ini serbuk gergaji dipanaskan dengan udara terbatas pada suhu 350-5000C, selama 30-60 menit.  Variabel yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah suhu dan lama pirolisis.  Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan yang menghasilkan  bio-oil yang optimum adalah suhu 500oC selama 30 menit, dengan karakteristik sebagai berikut; rendemen liquid 43,75% dengan rendemen bio-oil sebesar 7,95%, kadar fenol 3,80, pH 2,84, bobot jenis 1,116 g/cm3, nilai kalor 22,42 MJ/kg dan daya nyala sedang. Bio-oil yang dihasilkan didominasi oleh asam asetat dan fenol, selain itu terdapat beberapa komponen yang termasuk bahan bakar mudah terbakar yaitu 2-propanon (CAS) aseton, benzena, 1,2,4 trimethylbenzena, dan 2-Furanmetanol (furfuril alkohol).

Abstract

The  sengon wood waste fired stove was installed, to supily energy into certain length of circulating duct of the dryirlg chamber. The utilization of wet slabs  (moisture content  163.3  percent) in a wood stove produced drying air tempe- rature in the chamber at  30ᵒC.  When  jointing board waste  (moisture content  12.16  percent) was used to fire the stoue the drying temperature  of  70°.C was  achiued.The efficiency  of the wood waste fired  stoue was 39.46 percent, calculated on the basis of the energy produced by sengon wood waste burned, and the energy consumed by the drying  wood i.e 3.641 and 1.397 GJ.
