Abstract

Falcataria moluccana seedling seed orchards was established in 2006 located in Kediri East Java in collaboration between the Center for Forest Biotechnology and Tree Improvement Research and Development and Perum Perhutani. 77 open-pollinated families from four seed sources were progeny tested in Pare Kediri, East Java. The trial was arranged in a randomized completely block design, 4 tree line plot and replicated 6 times. At 8 months of age there were significant differences among seed sources for diameter. The survival rate of family varied from 54.2 % to 86.5%. Difference betwen families within seed sours were significant only for diameter growth. Heritability estimanes for diameter were moderate (h2i= 0.16; h2f = 0.42).).Genetic correlation beetwen diameter and height was strong (rg = 0.89) and higher than  phenotipic correlatione (rp = 0.86).

Abstract

Seed orchard A. auriculiformis F1 at Wonogiri, Central Java has attacked by ganoderma caused root rot. To determine the genetic variation, the pattern of spread of ganoderma necessary to somatic incompatibility test and measure the growth. This study used 8 isolates of the fungus ganoderma. Fungi were grown on PDA (Potato dextrose agar), made parental isolates and paired with each other. The results showed that all pairings indicated incompatible reactionsm except self pairings. All self-pairings showed compatible reactions that indicated by miycelia merged on PDA forming a single colony. Incompatible reaction zone is characterized by sparse zone, demarcation line and pigmentation. The results of somatic incompatibility test, ganoderma have different genotypes or it is not a single colony. The result indicates that the distribution of root rot in Seed orchard A. auriculiformis F1 at Wonogiri, Central Java not only occured by root to root contact.

Abstract

Forest timber plantation of nyawai (Ficus variegate Blume) established by using vegetative propagated seedling from superior individu is very potential to develop for fulfilling the raw material demand of wood processing industries. The purpose of research was to get the optimum rooting medium and growth regulator concentration for rooting shoot cuttings of nyawai. Materials cuttings were provided from seedlings at 12 months age. The experiment was performed as factorial in a completely randomized design with two factors, i.e. rooting media factors (sand, mixed coconut coir dust + rice husk (2: 1, v/v), and mixed coconut coir dust+ husk rice + husk rice charcoal (6: 3: 1, v/v)) and IBA growth regulator concentrations (0, 50, 100,200,400, 600, and 800 mg/l), with three replications so that twenty experimented unit were used at each replication. Rooting percentage, root number, root length, shoot length, root biomass, shoot biomass, and leaf number were evaluated. Based on the result, sand media produced the highest rooted cuttings (88.10%), while the use of IBA showed the trend to increase the number of root with increasing the concentrations, but it influenced to reduce the shoot growth. Combination treatment of sand media and IBA 800mg/l provided the highest rooted cuttings (93.33%) with the number of root 21. Therefore, for the successful propagation of nyawai, cuttings are planted in sand media with IBA 800 mg/l.

Abstract

It is important tu understand the floral visitor as preliminary study of aspecies in order to manage seed orchard. This study was aimed  to observe the floral visitors and nectar  nectar     production of M. alternifolia flowers at second generation seeding seed orchard, West Wyalong, New Sounth Wales, Australia.  One Five-minute count of insect visiations was carried out each morning between 10.00 and 11.00  am and each afternoon between 03.00 and 04.00 pm over five consecutive days during peak flowering. The numbersss of inflorescences for each sample branch, and all insect visits to each inflorescence, were recorded and collected. Insect traps were also placed on every sample tree to assist observation of the varieties of small insect. Insect traps were placed in the two partial exclusion treatments, i.e: (1) inside the fiberglass fly-screen with 2 mm apertures; (2) on the branch located in the middle of each tree without netting. Results revealed that flowers produced only a small amount of nectar which was indicated by a shiny appearance at the base of the floral cup in the morning, but this quckly disappeared as a result of evaporation. Thrips and flies and flies were dominat floral visitor of M. alternifolia, while several other types of insects, e.g. beetles, wasps, plant bugs, butteflies, predatory shield bugs and leafhopper were only infrequent visitors.

Abstract

Vegetative propagation has an important role to produce high quality of seedling. Through vegetative propagation, the genetic potential of a mother tree will totally be inherited to the off-springs. Therefore, the success of stool plants preparation from selected mother tree is very important. The aim of study was to investigate the effect of populations and height of topping to sprouting ability of Meranti tembaga (Shorea leprosula Miq.) stool plants. This study was arranged in completely randomized block design with factorial. The two treatments used in the study were three populations (Muara Wahau, East Kalimantan; Kenangan, East Kalimantan and Ketapang, West Kalimantan) and four height of toppings (20 cm, 40 cm, 60 cm and 80 cm). The results of study showed that population were significantly different for the number of sprouts, length of sprouts, diameter of sprouts and number of nodus. While the height of topping were significantly different only for the number of sprouts. The best number of sprouts (6.82 buds), length of sprouts (18.41 cm), diameter of sprouts (2.14 mm) and number of nodus (7.10 nodus) was found at Muara Wahau population. While among the height of toppings, the best number of sprouts was found at 80 cm height (8,06 buds), followed by 60 cm (6,00 buds), 40 cm (5,08 buds) and 20 cm (3,86 buds). There were no significant differences on the interaction between population and height of topping for all measured characters.

Abstract

Kayu merah ( Pterocarpus indicus Willd) which listed as one of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in the category Vulnerable (VU A1D) is naturally distributed throughout Indonesia included Java, Sulawesi, Maluku, Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and Papua. Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) molecular markers have been used to analyze the genetic diversity of six (6) natural populations of kayu merah from Seram Island, Manggarai Timur-Flores, Ngada-Flores, Soe-Timor Tengah Selatan, Kefamenanu-Timor Tengah Utara and Kupang. Ninety-nine (99) polymorphic loci were obtained from twelve RAPD primers. The mean of genetic diversity was 0.2024. Population with the highest genetic diversity was Soe (0.2925) and the lowest genetic diversity was Ngada (0.1212). The highest genetic distance among the populations was between Ngada and Kefamenanu (0.376), while the nearest genetic distance was between Ngada and Manggarai Timur (0.060). The informations resulted from this study are important to support the tree improvement and conservation programme of kayu merah.

Abstract

Cultivation of albizia as high priority of community forest of West Java in large scale have turned into monoculture stand. These stand has become vulnerable to insect attack such as bagworm. Attack of bagworm took place in the dry season causing growth retardation which in some cases leads to tree death. The aim of this research is to examine the affect of leaf extract of Toona sureni and extract of Beauveria bassiana fungi to kill bagworm and also compare level effectively with organofosfat synthetic insecticides. The result showed that at 7 day after application, highest mortality of bagworm were found on trees treated with T. sureni leaf extract (100%) followed by B. bassiana (92,31%) and organofosfat synthetic insecticides (76,15%).

Abstract

A provenance stands of sengon Solomon (Falcataria moluccana (Miq.) Barneby & JW Grimes was establishhed in Bondowoso, East Java in 2011. One provenance seed consisting of 25 families originated from Solomon Island were used in this trial. Provenance stands was designed by rows column design (incomplete block) involving 8 blocks, 4 trees per plot (plot tree) with a spacing of 3 m x 2 m. Several characters were observed i.e: survival rate, height, diameter and the presence of gall rust diseases; the observations were undertaken every 6 months from 6 months old up to the age of 18 months. The results showed that the mean of survival rates ranging from 75% to 90%; with the average survival rate of 84.83% (6 months), 83.26% (12 months) and 81.05% (18 months). The mean height and diameter of 6 months old (2.42 m, 2.97 cm), 12 months old (4.74 m, 5.56 cm), and 18 months old (7.35 m, 7.39 cm). Varian analysis of height, diameter, disease severity and intensity showed that there were no significant differences between families. All of families attacked by gall rust disease, however family number 2, 8 and 23 showed the lowest respond of attack compared to other families. Therefore, those families can be recommended for future development in terms of toleration to the gall rust disease.

Abstract

Since 2005, ramin has been included in CITES Appendix II and according to IUCN red list, ramin is also regarded as vulnerable (VU A1cd). The Lack of information on explant sterilization techniques in ramin tissue culture is one reason why there has not been enough initiation to develop ramin micro propagation. Plant tissue culture contamination has economic impact due to its direct influence in losses during in vitro culture of plants. The aim of this study was to observe the influence of explants sterilisation technique on acquisition rate of ramin axenic tissue culture with the rate of contamination increase, acsenic culture acquisition and shoot elongation as parameters. Ramin seedlings as explants source were collected from Tumbang Nusa, Central Kalimantan. Fifty replicating explants of one nodule each in 3 techniques were used in this study based on in vitro incubation time: sterilization 1 (24 hours incubation), sterilization 2 (48 hours incubation) and sterilization 3 (72 hours incubation) with non metallic antimicrobial compounds namely detergent, ditiocarbamate with mankozeb active ingredient (compound A), a compound containing 5.25% NaOCl added sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen oxide (compound B), 70% alcohol (compound C) as explants surface sterilants. Murashige-Skoog was used as media for evaluation of sterilization technique and explants regeneration on one year incubation. The results of this study indicate that the lowest rate of contamination was found in sterilization 3 (28%) with the success number of axenic tissue culture at 46%. The average shoot elongation of the axenic culture was 5.91 cm after 12 months subcultured in every month.
