Meanwhile, there are different perspectives on the pattern of history. The first is a perspective arguing that the pattern of historical movement as linear. The second perspective believes that the pattern of historical movement is circular. Third, there is also a perspective arguing that history has a cyclical pattern. Strong nation integrity and identity or personality are necessary for intercultural meeting to run well, living in harmony, and mutual respect. Abstract

Based on field research, this article discusses maritime leadership principle in Madurese fishing community, in Panarukan, Situbondo, East Java. This community has a unique tradition called as toron tompa’an. In this tradition, juragan laut (a ship leader) will feel very ashamed and decide to resign from his position if he failed in getting more fishes, especially cob fish. Although for reaching the position as juragan laut needs hard works and strict step by step mechanism with good achievement, he decide to resign because such failure means he, as a leader, cannot give enough livelihoods to the crews and juragan darat (a ship owner). For Indonesian context, the resign tradition in toron tompa’an will give a good teaching for political and governmental elites who never have such tradition when they made fatal failure in conducting the governance. Further, the tradition will be suitable value for making Indonesia better and more democratic. Keywords: Madurese fishing community, Panarukan, toron tompa’an

Abstract

There are few postcolonial novels which narrate identity negotiation between Indonesians and Dutch people comprehensively since Pramoedya Ananta Toer wrote his phenomenal postcolonial novels quartet Buru. However, some contemporary Indonesian short stories highlight identity negotiation particularly in the era during which a lot of Indonesian students and immigrants live in the Netherlands, the former colonizer of Indonesia. This translocation indicates the deconstruction of the centre by the former colonized people from the place called periphery (colony). The movement of the former colonized Indonesian people to Netherlands, as a consequence, brings about identity negotiation in the metropolitan centre and creates what is called by Homi Bhabha in-between space. The identity of the Indonesian characters in those contemporary Indonesian literary works is constructed by the Dutch. Conversely, the identity of the Dutch is also stereotyped by the Indonesians. The relations between the Indonesians and Dutch people in the past, during the colonial period, to some extent engulfs that construction. Keywords: identity, postcolonial studies, the Self, the Other

Abstract

This article discusses the ambiguity that occurs in the perspective of multiculturalism. Ongoing crosscultural dialogue between cultures with each other, influence each action antarunsur role of culture caused by the outflow of people or groups of people from one place to another place in the diaspora effect, is a form of multikulturaisme. Multiculturalism can not be fully accepted in this country, as reflected in the novel’s two MataMata Kucing: Sebuah Fabel Multikultural and Maryam. Most of the proponents of multiculturalism may be able to easily access the diversity of it, but for the others who do not understand or have knowledge of such multiculturalism, it will lead to conflict as reflected from the two novels that became the object of study. The result can be unpredictable if prolonged disputes and even stretch interval proximity relationships between individuals. Keywords: ambiguity, diaspora, multiculturalism.

Abstract

This article discusses the ideological aspects of the Ayat-Ayat Cinta novel. It is shown that the willingness for hegemony always goes hand in hand with the willingness for obtaining broader readership. Many interests are put in it with an assumption of the dominated subjects growing in number, but at the same time, the offered values have never been fully accepted as the dominating group expects. (Islamic group surrounding Habiburrahman El Shirazy). The text of AAC is full of tension between the two conflicting interests. On one hand, Islam is presented as universal, but on the other hand particular. Islam is also considred complete, but sometime needs the world to perfect itself. This condition is presented in the AAC for a particular reason. Islam-ness in the AAC is Islam that should be accepted by the mass. Islam-ness becomes an economic commodity. Therefore, AAC has to present a dynamic hegemony in which there is negotiation and resistance. Keywords: Islamic novel, ideology, Ayat-Ayat Cinta
