Abstract

The Chinese migration to Surabaya can be traced back to the 14th Century. Among the push factors that forced the Chinese to migrate to Surabaya, poor conditions of living in their home country caused by natural disasters, warfares, and inhospitable environment were notable. In addition, the Chinese migrants in the 19th century were attracted by employment opportunities in colonial mines and plantations. Initially, there were no problems occuring between the Chinese and the indigenous peoples in Surabaya. The Chinese interacted with the indigenous people through marriage, religion, cultural performances, language, and food. However, their relations began to break down with the strengthening of the Dutch colonial rule in Indonesia. In the 19th Century, the colonial government began to introduce a number of regulations that effectively segregated the Chinese from the rest of population, namely the “wijkenstelsel”, an ethnic-based identification system (passenstelsel) and the establishment of Chinese schools. The postcolonial policies further disrupted the relations between the Chinese and the indigenous people. The policies included the Ekonomi Benteng, PP 10/59 which prohibited the Chinese and others identified as foreigners from engaging in village retail trade. Several additional policies established by the East Java Pepelrada (Regional Military Authority to Implement Dwikora) also discriminated against the Chinese in Surabaya. Keywords: assimilation, the Chinese, the indigenous people, Surabaya

The motto of unity in diversity since has been introduced since the time of Majapahit as a spirit to appreciate cultural diversity. Concepts and theories employed here as perspective and the presented cases show that as the effects of acculturation crisis, the Indonesian culture becomes more appropriate when it is accessed with a productive intertextual reflection. The intertextual reflection on Bimasoetji showed the productivity of creative process to produce history. The readers are able to exploit Bimasoetji script or friction that exists to show a prosperity-producing new identity. On the other hand, deceptions as happening to the recitation of the superiority of Obahorok, a head of Dani tribe, just delay welfare. Abstract

The revolution era was inseparable from the earlier period. Despite the radical changes during the revolution, the previous elements remained in existene and had significant influences. Probolinggo was a small town, a sea port having agricultural and plantation bases and from the 19th century had an important significance for the Dutch colonial rule, not only in physical but sociocultural es well. Its geographical location near to Madura made it easily accessible for Madurese migration. The Madurese people grew to become the majority and in cultural terms, there was a mix of Madurese and Javanese elements. In the economic sector, the Javanese mostly engaged in wet field agriculture, while the Madurese accuppied a more heterogenous employment. Abstract

Bull fighting is a form of physical fight involving two bulls guided by two jokey (seler) found in Bondowoso regency. This performance emerged in line with the birth of the Bondowoso in the 19th century, initiated by Ki Ronggo, the central figure in the opening up of Bondowoso. Initially, the bull fighting had an amusement function, but then turned into a gambling arena. A shift from an amusement to a gambling arena had been strongly influenced by the ethnical characters of Madurese associated with violence and competition. Religious image linked ti this ethnic group could not prevent them from practicing gamble in the bull fighting festival. There had been a form of dependency between bull fighting, gambling, and the government as the holder of legal authority. A bull fighting without gambling would not attract spectators and without them the government could not make money from tax. In 1991, for example, the bull fighting made a contribution of 15 % of the Bondowoso’s total income. A political shift in Bondowoso from a nationalist, Golkardominated political power to a religious, PKB dominated political power caused the ban of the bull fighting festival due to religious reasons. Keywords: bull fighting, Madurese ethnic, Bondowoso
