Abstract

Two literary texts written by Chinese peranakan (Indonesiaborn Chinese) describe how the Chinese try to survive in Indonesia. They need a flexibility that is reflected in the use of language, literary genre, and their philosophy connected with the social environment where they live. The Dutch colonial government and the New Order treat them ambivalently. The legacy find its form of replacing Chinese names with Indonesian ones in order to get the national identity. They are inclusive to protect themselves from violence. Initially, it was safer to use neutral western names. Until now the Chinese peranakan tend to idolize Western, but at the same time doing cross cultural breeding through birth, marriage, and death rites. Most of them adopt middleeastern religion, despite also performing traditional Chinese, Javanese and western rites. Hybrid practices are no longer in the form of dialect because they come from a variety of cultural identities leading to a multicultural spirit that awakens them from ethnic sentiment. Keywords: Cina, ethnicity, hybridity, identity, peranakan

Abstract

The Indonesian nationalism has emerged through a long process of colonialism opression. In the course of history, it experienced a significant change. The dynasty politics, novel and newspaper, and religion became major sources of the handing down of nationalist values that rooted in the past. They provide inspirations for men of letters, poets, drama and art workers to immortilize various historical events in Indonesia. Recent development demonstrates a phenomenon of the truncated, superficial, and local nationalism. Solidarity for the victims of natural disasters, the oppressed people, football fans club solidarity, and solidarity for Ambalat, Simpadan, Palestine, Afghanistan, have proved the trend. Poetical experiences as an aesthetical appreciation tend to reject repetition. Therefore, the same spirit tends not to be brought to face similar phenomena because of boredom and saturation. Keywords: consumer culture, nationalism, repetition rejection, poetic, superficial

Abstract

Novel Poetics Surat Panjang tentang Jarak Kita yang Jutaan Tahun Cahaya (2013) by Dewi Kharisma Michellia is composed with an autobiographical technique to counter Katrin Bandel’s view on sexuality identity for young writer. This work may be seen from a different perspective of discussing woman, a self narrating style, gender, feminism, deconstruction, or even brought further to phenomenology practice. The discussion shows that the self character is able to merge into a non-self discourse and identity into non-identity and thus, becomes anonimousKeywords: identity, Surat Panjang novel, self character
