Abstract

Abstract

Pragmatics as the waste basket of linguistics –because this field of language study becomes the receiver of any unsolved linguistics problems– needs to accommodate the broadest understanding of the contexts themselves. Not only that it must include the so-called textual context and any extralinguistics ones such as the spatio-temporal settings, but it also includes ones that relate to social and cultural aspects. Comprehensive, wise, and through considerations on any situational aspects of the utterances, in addition to social and cultural aspects, might also determine the right interpretation of meanings of the language. All aspects of contexts that might be utilized and implemented comprehensively to interprete meanings of any unsolved linguistics items might be called in this way, the pragmatics context. The last mentioned is the main concern of the discussion of this article and definitely such context needs to be reinterpreted. Abstract

This article discusses hermeneutics theory developed by Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900— 2002). Gadamer’s hermeneutics critically examines aesthetic crisis and historical understanding theory from a Heideggerian perspective. Hermeneutics is a classical discipline relating to textual understanding. Through Gadamer’s hermeneutic theory, interpreter understand the presented texts by relating them to their historical contexts. This way of understanding leads to a notion that interpreting texts not only means as reproducing meaning, but also as producing meaning beyon the texts.. In the text there is context. Therefore, interpreter should understand the historical horizon of textual and contextual understandings in order to establish its whole meaning. Keywords: hermeneutics, historicity, horizon, meaning

Abstract

One way to know the characteristics of traditional Javanese architecture is by looking at pictorial data found in the reliefs of temple buildings. The Lara Jonggrang temple contains a symbolic meaning. In general, the type of roof on the temple reliefs is rural type. The roof construction composed of a series of components called battens, standing on beam, and rafters. Most of the houses have no walls. Wooden buildings on the reliefs show the use of the functional requirements of geography, geology, and climate. The birds are always perched on the roof of building of the reliefs with the settings under the palace and hermitage with central figures such as Rama, Shinta adding a dramatic impression. House placement with a bird perched on the roof which is always placed at the top of each relief indicates a status. This also suggests that in the days of the Central Java Hindus, house was a status symbol and the placement of the house there served only as reliefs featuring characters of high strata. Keywords: iconography, traditional Javanese architecture, reliefs temple

Abstract

This article elaborates the Minak Jinggo story. It is a unique phenomenon. Some people regard it as just a tale, resulting from human creativity, that had nothing to do with any historical events; Other people hold the view that the story had a connection with great event, Paregreg War, Perang Paregreg, between Majapahit and Blambangan. The story is still held by the local people until today and becomes the most popular story of janger art performance in Banyuwangi. It can be briefly stated that the proposal of Minak Jinggo (MJ) to marry Kencono Wungu (KW) symbolizes the willingness of Blambangan not to be subordinated by Majapahit. From a structural point of view, the story of MJ has several structures going harmoniously with the flow of story. There are diachronical structure and hidden structure shaped by relations among the story elements. Keywords: Minak Jinggo story, Banyuwangi, structural analysis, Janger folk theater
