Abstract

The invention and application of the media forms using satellite communications, such as telephone and television, as well as the technological transportation advances result in the fading of physical, spatial boundaries because information on all events occuring in any part of the world becomes easily accessible to many people in different places almost in no time. Mass media such as television, can be interpreted simply as one of the instruments which reinforces human efforts in realizing the above obsession. The optimization and promotion of indigenous arts and culture of the Jember regency in the form of documentation and the making of the album as one of the shows on television programmes can serve as representation and image creation of the area and its complicated culture. Through this study, it is expected to create a better communication between communities and cultures in the regency of Jember that can be utilized to help the local government in formulating policies to explore and to develop its potential resources. Keywords: promotion , arts, local wisdoms, Jember regency, local television

Abstract

There are two important things in Indonesian culture and their relationships to one another, namely the diversity of Indonesian culture and the meaning of cultural diversity for the development of Indonesian culture. In Indonesia cultural diversity is a reality and facts, but also the ideology of nation and state. Therefore, diversity is one of the main characteristics of Indonesian society, both on the outer (physical), and the inner (spiritual). This has a profound impact on the way in which the Indonesians address diversity and difference in everyday life. On the one hand, diversity then takes a form of values that guide the people of Indonesia to address the wide range of diversity and differences, as well as a variety of behavior patterns that are open to it. On the other hand, it manifests itself in a variety of creative culture that is very diverse and hybrid in pattern. In such situations, the authenticity and origins of the elements of foreign culture that come to Indonesia are not considered to be very important. Even more important is the role or the contribution of the various elements of foreign cultures to the development of local and national cultures of Indonesia, as well as for the Indonesian people wherever they are. Abstract

The development of the private plantations during the mid19th in the regency of Jember led to socioeconomic changes among the population. From that moment the indigenous population got the opportunities to make money provided by the large employment the plantation had generated. The development of plantation attracted migrants to come from Madura and other parts of Java and shifted the region’s demographic features from unpopulated to more densely populated. There emerged Madurese culture in North Jember and Javanese culture in the south. In central Jember where the Madurese and Javanese population groups were more or less equal in number, a cultural mix created a hybrid culture called as pandhalungan. Keywords: Jember, urban growth, pandhalungan.

Abstract

Robinson Crusoe is a novel written by Daniel Defoe telling about a story of Robinson Crusoe’s life experiences in the three places such as in York, at sea and in the islands. This article discusses about these places, particularly the last place, and the events experienced by Crusoe that can influence his personality change. Therefore, the qualitative research is done to know whether the setting and the events undergone by him, as the main character, can change his personality or not, by applying Murray’s theory of personality describing how personality is formed. This theory employs three sets of determinants: group membership, situational and constitutional. It is also applied the psychological approach to analyze the main character’s personality and to find out the setting and the events influencing his personality change. The result of the research proves that there has been a close relation between setting and personality in which setting and the events experienced by Crusoe during his life adventure in the three places can influence the change of his personality. Keywords: setting, life experiences, personality change
