Abstract

In Bali, there are many schools that combine national and international curriculum, English is used as a medium of instruction. Moreover, English as a foreign language (EFL) is considered an important subject. Thus, these schools try to design the teaching-learning process that emphasizes language and its culture. After doing the library research by reviewing some related textbooks and research articles, this conceptual article figured out that the ideas of involving a native speaker and cultural authenticity in teaching EFL classes should be based on the learning objective. Both are important if the focus of the EFL class is put toward giving students a contextual experience of EFL use. However, if it is primarily intended to make the students experience the real cultural contexts of English, the ideas of involving the native speaker and cultural authenticity might be irrelevant. This might happen because teaching nowadays is intended to provide students to deal with the 21st century so that they should experience different cultural contexts that enable them to collaboratively work. To summarize, a native speaker and cultural authenticity are important in EFL class; however, they should not be used as a basic assumption of the success and failure of EFL class.

Abstract

Mathematics teachers have different characteristics in the presentation material, which may determine different interpretations in students' perspectives. Mathematical learning media can be created by using writing, audio, visuals, or even a combination of all. If the selection of mathematics learning media is carried out correctly, it will greatly help learning interaction in the classroom. Philosophy of science and education have a large role in shaping the characteristics of the media of mathematics learning. In the field of science and education, several aspects and dimensions are the basis for making mathematics learning media, namely aspects of ideas and facts, as well as abstract and concrete dimensions both theoretically and practically. Based on thinking, education, and expertise in the development of mathematics learning media, if summarized in accordance with practical objectives, it will be able to create practical values that are in accordance with the needs or learning outcomes.

Abstract

The subak system comprises four aspects, namely economic, ecological, social, and cultural aspects. It is important to have the abilities to understand these four pillars, especially for higher education in preparing students-teachers as educational facilitators. The aim of this study is to compare the frequency of photo themes in relation to ecological, economic, social, and cultural aspects yielded from photovoice results of student-teachers. This study was conducted from November 2018 to January 2019 at UNMAS Soka campus and several subak sites in Denpasar. This study was conducted in mixed methods where two approaches were utilised: qualitative and quantitative with community-based participatory action research (CBPR) as its design. There were 18 student-teachers (4 males and 14 females) of Biology Education Study Program, Universitas Mahasaraswati, Academic Year 2018/2019, participated in this study. The data analysis technique used was analysis of variance (ANOVA). The finding of this study showed that there was a significant difference (F = 6.973 and P = 0.000) among the frequency of ecological, economic, social, and cultural themes of the student-teachers’ photovoice results, with the frequency value of each theme in the following order: ecology = 35, economy = 46, social = 26, and cultural = 63.

Abstract

Problem solving approach is defined as a procedure that is used as an effort to find a way out of difficulties and is an intellectual activity using all the knowledge, skills, and reasoning it has. Open problem solving involves problems that have more than one way of solving, to get one correct answer. The purpose of this study is to investigate the application of open problem solving approaches in improving student mathematics learning outcomes. This research is a type of classroom action research (CAR) with a design cycle. In this study, 24 research subjects were used, taken from VIIK grade students who did not meet the minimum completeness criteria (KKM). The object of the targeted research is student learning outcomes in mathematics. After the data is collected, it is then analyzed by quantitative descriptive analysis. The results of data analysis showed an average increase in mathematics learning outcomes from pre-cycle to cycle I by 5.39 points, pre-cycle to cycle II by 17.56 points, and cycle I to cycle II by 12.17 points. Based on the results of this data analysis, it can be concluded that the application of an open problem solving approach can improve student mathematics learning outcomes
