Abstract

Comprehending a text successfully is influenced by many factors. Texts will be easier to comprehend if learners are able to identify these essential factors. This study was aimed at recognizing the effect of using prior knowledge in economics and cohesion devices in comprehending business English texts. The research was conducted in Faculty of Economics and Business, Perbanas Institute – Jakarta. 75 students as respondents were selected using two stage cluster random sampling. Then three tests for all variables were given to the respondents. The data was used for analysis using SPSS multiple regression analysis. The result revealed that (1) prior knowledge in economics significantly influenced reading comprehension in business English text (2) the mastery of cohesion devices significantly influenced reading comprehension in business English texts (3) simultaneously both prior knowledge in economics and cohesion device mastery significantly influenced reading comprehension in business English texts.

Abstract

Nowadays, people in Indonesia begin to improve their English ability by learning English both in school and informal institution. Because learning English is different from learning our mother tongue which are completely different in their spelling, pronunciation, and grammar, people have to learn words with strategies to make it easier. Because of that reason, the researcher is interested to investigate the degree of the use of language learning strategies and to find out whether there are any correlation between six categories of language learning strategies used by the students of the first grade at acceleration class of SMA Negeri 5 Malang and their English proficiency. The approach of this study is quantitative related with statistical approach. The population of this research were 60 students on ten grades at acceleration program, senior high school 5, Malang. The data about the strategies that the students used were obtained from Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire completed by the students and their school grade report of the first semester. The result shows that the use of overall language learning strategies falls into medium level. Specifically, the students prefer to use social strategies as the most frequently used, followed by memory, cognitive, affective, metacognitive and compensation strategies. A positive sufficient correlation is found between metacognitive strategies and English proficiency. This sufficient correlation can be examined by looking at the context since English is used as the foreign language in Indonesia. In sum, the students of the first grade at acceleration class are the moderate users of overall language learning strategies. Metacognitive strategies are found as the strategies that correlate with students’ proficiency. Therefore, the teachers of acceleration class should introduce and promote more about the metacognitive strategies to their students in order to increase English proficiency. The researcher also suggest for the readers, especially learners to apply metacognitive strategies because it can improve language skill.

Abstract

Pengembangan ini bertujuan untuk menghasilkan multimedia interaktif untuk pembelajaran menulis teks cerpen serta mendeskripsikan tingkat kelayakan media. Pengembangan dilakukan dengan model pengembangan prosedural yang meliputi tahap prapengembangan, pengembangan, validasi, dan revisi. Produk dikembangkan berdasarkan tiga aspek, yaitu isi media, tampilan media, dan bahasa. Validasi dilakukan kepada ahli materi dan ahli media. Hasil validasi menunjukkan bahwa produk telah layak dan dapat diimplementasikan dalam pembelajaran menulis cerpen di sekolah. Kata Kunci: media pembelajaran, menulis teks cerpen, multimedia interaktif.

Abstract

This study intended to investigate if there was any significant difference between students’ writing performance who were treated using direct peer feedback and students writing performance who were treated using conventional method. The samples were X TKJ1 and X TKJ2 at SMK Mahardika Karangploso in the 2015/2016 academic year. In this study, the researcher used quasi-experimental research design to gain the data. The researcher implemented direct peer feedback in experimental group and conventional method in control group. Writing test as an instrument was used to collect the data. The research was conducted by the researcher for six meetings. Independent sample t-test was used to examine the data, the result showed that the mean score of experimental group was bigger than control group (82.17 > 71.38). Moreover, the sig.2-tailed value was less than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). It meant that there was significant differences between students’ writing performance who were treated using direct peer feedback and students’ writing performance who were treated using conventional method.

Abstract

There are many classrooms activities that can be used by the teacher to get goal in teaching learning process, for example conversation, role-playing, discussion, debates, and games. All of them represent strategies for providing the imotional involvement necessary for authentic interaction in the classrooms. In the Rekayasa Perangkat Lunak(RPL) of Eleventh Class at SMKN I Labang- Bangkalan, one of method which has used the teacher that is discussion method. In this research, the researcher will discuss about the implementation of discussion method in that class and problems are faced of discussion method in that class. In this study, the researcher tried to uses the theory of Sanjaya (2009) says that discussion method is very effective in helping students interact in class, learn to solve problems, answer questions, and improve student’s skills in english speaking. Then, researcher uses qualitative research study as a way to analyze the problems in applying these methods in class discussion. Observations and interviews are a research tool that will be uses to assist the research process. Total population in the Rekayasa Perangkat Lunak(RPL) of Eleventh Class at SMKN I Labang- Bangkalan consist of eight classes. However, in this study the researcher take sample only one class that is From the result, writer finds that the application of discussion method which conducted in the classroom, there is one form of kinds discussion method which has effect to the others forms. That’s why in stating that the discussion method suitable in the uses of English teacher as a strategy in teaching and learning in the classroom. Key words: Discussion Methods, Oral Proficiency

Abstract

Kemampuan interaksi dan daya saing positif sangatlah dibutuhkan mahasiswa sebagai bekal menghadapi persaingan dunia kerja usai lulus dari perguruan tinggi, maka dari itu sebisa mungkin rasa itu harus dipupuk dan di tanamkan dalam diri masing-masing mahasiswa. Salah satunya adalah dengan pembelajaran yang mengandung kompetisi namun tetap berkooperasi dan kolaborasi yaitu C&C learning. Metode yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini adalah PTK dengan empat siklus yang diadopsi dari Kemmis & Taggart (1988) yang memiliki empat langkah: perencanaan tindakan, pelaksanaan tindakan, pengamatan, dan refleksi. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah lembar pengamatan, kuisioner dan tes. Hasil dari penelitian ini menyatakan bahwa pada siklus pertama hasil penelitian menunjukkan kurang berhasil karena hanya 46.15% mahasiswa memperoleh nilai dibawah 80. hal ini belum memenuhi kriteria keberhasilan yang telah ditetapkan. Sedangkan pada siklus kedua jumlah mahasiswa yang memperoleh nilai diatas 80 sebanyak 88.46%. Dengan perlehan ini maka penelitian disimpulkan telah sukses. Dari hasil kuisioner diperoleh respon dari mahasiswa sebagai berikut: sebanyak 24 mahasiswa (92,30 %) mahasiswa menyatakan senang dan mampu berinteraksi denagn baik. 25 mahasiswa (96,15%) menyatakan mampu menyatakan ide tanpa beban. Sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa C&C learning mmampu meningkatkan kemampuan interkasi dan berdaya saing positif dalam mata kuliah interpretive reading.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the Javanese ethnic local wisdom in farmer community folklore of South coastal area of Kebumen. The problems studied were how the existence of folklore was in farmer community folklore of South coastal area of Kebumen and what local wisdoms were implied in their folklore. The data analyzed was oral folklore consisting of four criteria, partially oral folklore constituting farming sector rite, and non-oral folklore constituting food, drugs, and traditional house. The approach method used was an ethnographic descriptive qualitative with ethnoscientific analysis model. The data was collected using in-depth interview with selected informant. The sample of research was the farmer community of South coastal area of Kebumen Regency. The result of research showed that folklore in farmer community contained local wisdoms: 1) local cultural, 2) local spiritual. 3) local educative, 4) local symbolic, 5) local economic, 6) local practical, and local historic. In addition to containing local wisdom, folklore also served as education to the next generation as preserving the wisdom inherent to farmer environment.

Abstract

RRRV (Reading, Retelling, Rehearsal, and Videotaping) learning method is a verbal English learning method which is useful to combine reading ability and retelling a story preceeded by doing rehearsal and therefore students’ verbal competence can be increased during this process. This research aims to test the effectiveness in applying RRRV to merely RRR without V. The subjects are students at faculty of language and literature consisting of group A (RRRV) and group B (RRR) only. Pre-test of English proficiency is given to group A and group B before treatment is presented to both of them. The result of the test is used to ascertain whether the goups are homogenous in terms of their English proficiency. It shows that both group A and B have equal ability in TOEFL test result, thus both groups are considered to be homogenous and hence different treatment are given to group A and B. After treatments, data is taken from both groups based on post-test result by retelling the content of story and including video-taping for group A and audio-taping for group B. Meanwhile, data is taken from questionnaire consists of students’ opinion in applying RRRV and RRR method. Data from the test is stored in SPSS version 22 and inferential statistics of independent sample t-test analysis is used to examine if there is significant difference between the use of RRRV and RRR only. The result of questionnaire is analysed using descriptive statistics. Hopefully, the resulf of this research is able to contribute to the body of knowledge about how to improve verbal English proficiency.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is knowing the use of media to teach different learning style of student in Vocational School of Medical Nusantara Pamekasan. In this article, the researcher got the data by doing direct interview with one of the English teacher in that school. Based on the data, this article explain about the use of media to teach students with differet learning style.

Abstract

We have been quite familiar with art and literary work in our life. They can be music, pain or literature. Literature is human expression consisting experience, consideration, feeling, idea, spirit, and conviction in form of concrete description that arouse attraction by using language. Literature is the result of ideas that belongs to human. The result of literary works can be written work , pictures or music. Literary works in written form include the novel, poem, short story, verse, etc. While in pictures form include painting, movie, photograph, etc. And literary works in the form of music include songs that every day we listen. This thesis is an effort to analyze the moral values in the movie entitled “47 Ronin”, which might be very useful for the researcher himself, the readers, and other researchers who might need it as source of information. There are three research problems proposed from this “47 Ronin” analyzing film. They are: (1) The moral value found on this film, (2) The moral values conveyed on this film, (3) The messages that can be delivered to the viewers. Based on the result of this study the researcher found some moral values contained in the movie”47 Ronin”, such as: friendliness, tolerance and acceptance, self-confidence, determination, honesty, positive attitude, patience, initiative and courage, motivation, self respect. The researcher hopes those values would be useful for the Viewers and the readers of this thesis as their life guidance to be better persons. Keywords: Moral Value, “47 Ronin” Film
