Abstract

Educators and governments need to regard and encourage more access to literacy genres. By being able to access to multiple genres of literacy, students are empowered to perform better in tests, which in the long run, enables them to take control of their own world and future. In addition, policy makers’ consideration also needs to be equally addressed to both sexes: females and males. They should not get marginalised, either their preference or their interest. In the case of  South Australian school geography, the girls are believed to be marginalised in both their preference and interest. In 1991, there was ‘an unusually high number of girls’ failed PES geography examination, the rationale is believed that there was unbalanced address to female and male students in the examination that the guestions are gendered in a way that it is to marginalize feminist and consider masculine as superior.  Keywords: access, literacy, gendered questions, school geography

Abstract

Abstract: There are many methods applied by educators in teaching languages in the world. Some of them believe that traditional classroom method is considered the best, while others prefer to implement new way of teaching, using computers to assist students in learning a language. This new method is known as Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). However, not all students who are good in using computers succeed to do self-study. Such students failed to enjoy Life on the Screen, it is not about computer, it is about people and the relationships into which they enter with machines and, first of all, with themselves through computer-mediation (Debski ,1997, p. 29). To review and consolidate ideas and conditions that can be the obstacles and drawbacks to the CALL application; Debski and Gruba did a project-oriented computer assisted language learning (PrOCALL) at the University of Melbourne in two second semesters (12 weeks each) over the years 1998 –1999, involving many languages (Chinese, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian, and English as Second Language (ESL)). The result of their ProCALL project is that CALL is proven to be beneficial to tertiary education at the University of Melbourne, this success takes place both within the group of students who have both advanced and low computer skill. Australia, for example, starts to insert CALL in the curriculum, although it is limited to year 12 students only. It is a good start. Australia’s policy proofs that CALL is beneficial in schools, it means that CALL is not only beneficial for tertiary education at the University of Melbourne, but also in Victoria. This paper will also discuss about crucial matters like integrating this sophisticated technology to suit the curriculum and the importance to attract the interest of big softwares companies to invest money in CALL projects.Key words: CALL, ProCALL, Australia, The University of Melbourne

Abstract

BackgroundRadical cystectomy (RC) is the gold standard treatment for muscle-invasive bladder carcinoma. A predictive factor is needed for the aggressive approach as it could lead to overtreatment. Elevated blood cell count (BCC) markers are reported to have a significant association with poor outcomes in several types of malignancy. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte-ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are well-known inexpensive and effective representative markers of inflammatory conditions. This study aimed to determine the BCC as a predictive factor of overall survival (OS) in patients with bladder carcinoma (BC) after RC. MethodsA retrospective cohort study was conducted involving 26 patients who had undergone RC. The demographic characteristics and BCC markers such as hemoglobin (Hb). NLR, PLR and lymphocyte/monocyte ratio (LMR) were collected. The patients were categorized based on the BCC marker value (³ median and < median). Kaplan–Meier survival analysis was done to determine overall survival (OS) on BCC markers. The association between patient demographics and one-year survival was also determined using Mantel-Cox (Log-rank) method. ResultsAmong the 26 patients, the mean age was 55.6 ± 12.9 years. On univariate analysis, none of the demographic characteristics was found to be a significant predictor of one-year and overall survival (p>0.05). Hemoglobin, NLR, PLR and LMR were not significant predictors of one-year survival and OS (p>0.05). ConclusionsThe BCC was not a significant predictive factor of survival in patients with bladder cancer after radical cystectomy.

Abstract

RRRV (Reading, Retelling, Rehearsal, and Videotaping) learning method is a verbal English learning method which is useful to combine reading ability and retelling a story preceeded by doing rehearsal and therefore students’ verbal competence can be increased during this process. This research aims to test the effectiveness in applying RRRV to merely RRR without V. The subjects are students at faculty of language and literature consisting of group A (RRRV) and group B (RRR) only. Pre-test of English proficiency is given to group A and group B before treatment is presented to both of them. The result of the test is used to ascertain whether the goups are homogenous in terms of their English proficiency. It shows that both group A and B have equal ability in TOEFL test result, thus both groups are considered to be homogenous and hence different treatment are given to group A and B. After treatments, data is taken from both groups based on post-test result by retelling the content of story and including video-taping for group A and audio-taping for group B. Meanwhile, data is taken from questionnaire consists of students’ opinion in applying RRRV and RRR method. Data from the test is stored in SPSS version 22 and inferential statistics of independent sample t-test analysis is used to examine if there is significant difference between the use of RRRV and RRR only. The result of questionnaire is analysed using descriptive statistics. Hopefully, the resulf of this research is able to contribute to the body of knowledge about how to improve verbal English proficiency.
