Abstract

This study was to investigate the Influence of Movie Maker in the M-Learning Model and learning motivationtoward the speaking ability of eleventh-gradestudents at State Senior High School 1 Payung. The population of this study is all of the eleventh-grade students of Senior High School 1 Payung, in the academic year of 2019/2020. The sample was 60 students taken by two-stage random sampling. In carrying out the research, the researcher used factorial design. To know the classification of students who had high and low motivation. The researcher was conducted 20 items. Then, in analyzing the data used independent sample t-test and two-way ANOVA. The result of this study indicated that; Firstly,there was asignificant difference in speaking ability between eleventh-grade students with high and those with low motivation who were taught through collaborative learning methods by using Movie Maker.Secondly, there was asignificant difference in speaking ability between eleventh-grade students with high motivation and those with low motivation who were taught by using conventional teaching techniques.Thirdly, there was asignificant difference in speaking ability between eleventh-grade students of high motivation who were taught through collaborative learning methods by using Movie Maker and those who were taught by using conventional teaching techniques.Lastly, there was not any significant interaction effect of the collaborative learning method by using Movie Maker and learning motivation towards students’ speaking ability.

Abstract

This article is concerned with the inquiry on the influence of interactive multimedia and reading habit toward students’ writing achievement. This study is aimed to investigate the empirical evidence about interactive multimedia and reading habit and its influence on writing achievement. The population of this study encompassed all the seventh-grade students of Ar Rahman Islamic Junior High School of which total is 112 students. From the population, only 34 students were taken as samples. A simple random sampling technique was used in recruiting the samples. This is a quantitative study. The data were collected by using questionnaire, pre-test, and post-test. Data were analyzed by using t-test and Two Way Anova. Findings show that there were significant influences of interactive multimedia and reading habit toward seventh-grade students’ writing achievement. There were interaction effects from the application of interactive multimedia and reading habit on the seventh-grade students’ writing achievement. There was a significant difference in writing achievement between seventh-grade students who had high reading habits and those who had low reading habits taught by interactive multimedia. The conclusion suggests that interactive multimedia and reading habit show significant roles to improve students’ writing achievement of descriptive texts.

Abstract

Moral values as one of the important elements in the movie are also a very important role in our daily lives. In “Wonder” movie by R.J. Palacio, the author presents many moral values conveyed through the main character that is Auggie. The objective of this research was to investigate the moral values found in the “Wonder” movie by R. J. Palacio and the theoretical implication for teaching literature. A qualitative method was used to describe the dialogues/scenes that contain moral values with structural and psychological approaches. In this research, the writer used triangulation to ensure the validity of the data. The result of the research showed that there are ten moral values found in the “Wonder” movie, they are love and affection, struggle, kindness, bravery, self-confidence, forgiveness, honesty, wisdom, strong belief, courage. Hopefully, the students can learn and practice those positive moral values in their daily life. Therefore, by watching the movie, they not only get the entertainment but also moral messages which are implied in the story.

Abstract

The main problem of this research was “Is it effective to teach writing narrative through stimuli questions technique to the tenth-grade students of State High School 1 of Palembang?”. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to find out whether or not it was effective teaching writing narrative paragraphs through the stimuli question technique to the tenth-grade students of State High School 1 of Palembang. The method of this research was the experimental method. The population of this study was the tenth-grade students of State High School 1 of Palembang, in the academic year of 2016/2017. The sample of this study was 39 students who were chosen by convenience sampling. The data were collected through two kinds of tests, pre-test, and post-test. The data were analyzed by a matched t-test. Based on the results of the data analysis, it was found that the students’ average score in the pre-test was 59.1, and the students’ average score in the post-test was 68.6. Based on the matched t-test calculation, it was found out that the t-obtained was 8.84. the critical value of a 5% significance level was 1.684. it showed that t-obtained was higher than the t-table. From this study, it was found that teaching writing narrative paragraphs through stimuli questions technique to the tenth-grade students of State High School 1 of Palembang was effective.

Abstract

Abstract: The purposes of this study were (1) to find out what moral values found in the novel “Bound” by Okky Madasari and (2) to describe the intrinsic elements of the novel. The method used was descriptive qualitative. Data collection was done by using documentation, book reviewer, and expert interview. The validity of the data used in this study was the triangulation theory. The data analysis technique in this study was done with qualitative data analysis techniques. The results of the study indicated that (1) The moral values of the main character, contained in the novel “Bound” by Okky Madasari were divided into moral value of humanity, the moral value of the social, moral value of justice, and moral value of religion, ad (2) the intrinsic elements of this novel consists of a plot, setting, character, and characterization. Abstract

The objective of this study was to describe the errors made in the Indonesian to English google translations of online Sumatera Express newspaper. This study employed five texts taken from online Sumatera Express newspaper made by using Google Translate. Five texts of the online Sumatera Express newspaper were analyzed. The categorization of translation errors was adapted from King and Stanley (1996), building Skills for Toefl. The errors can occur in the words, phrases, clauses, and sentences of the texts. The data gathered were analyzed descriptively by using a qualitative approach.The technique used was triangulation. The findings suggest that there were 12 grammatical errors included subject-verb agreement (3 errors), verbtense agreement (2 errors), word forms (1 error), reduced clause (1 error), connectors (3 errors), redundancy (1 error), and parallel structure (1 error). The conclusion suggested that there were 12 grammatical errors found in the five translated texts of online Sumatera Express newspaper, Google translation strategies used word by word translation without considering the actual meaning of the sentences and grammatical rules, English uses “Menerangkan-Diterangkan (M-D)” or “ModifierHeadword”, whereas Bahasa Indonesia uses “Diterangkan – Menerangkan (D-M) or ”Headword-Modifier”. And the theoretical implication for language teaching has explained in chapter four.

Abstract

This research study was carried out based on the problem faced by the writer as the teacher of English at SMAN 19 Palembang. The result of the preliminary study at the eleventh grade of SMAN 19 Palembang showed that the students’ reading comprehension achievement did not meet the standard criteria of success. To solve the problem, the writer decided to conduct classroom action research. The research problem of this research were “ How could PQ4R Strategy improve the students’ reading comprehension achievement to the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 19 Palembang?” and “What was the students’ perception of the implementation of PQ4R strategy to improve their reading comprehension achievement? This study was conducted in three cycles by following the procedure of classroom action research: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The findings of the study showed that the PQ4R strategy could increase students’ reading comprehension achievement. It could be inferred that students’ perception was very good.

Abstract

The research objectives are to find out:(1) what speech acts are found in the novel “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson, (2) the forms used to express speech acts meaning in this novel, (3) what the kinds of speech acts appear dominantly in this novel, (4) the ways of the novelist moral values are expressed in speech acts of this novel, and (5) the theoretical implication for English Language Teaching. Qualitative methods and content analysis were used in this research. Documentation, book reviewer, and interview were used as data collection. Triangulation was used to get validity. Research results are (1) all speech acts types appeared,(2) The were 4 directives forms, 4 commisive forms, 6 representatives forms, 3 declarations forms, 12 expressive forms,(3) Expressive was dominant,(4) The novelist expressed moral values through expressive dominantly. Abstract

This study is concerned with the Influence of Guided Reading Strategy and Reading Motivation towards Students’ Reading Comprehension Achievement. The problems being formulated in this inquiry seek to find out the extent of Guided Reading Strategy, students’ Reading Motivation, and what teaching strategies are suitable to be applied to improve students’ Reading Comprehension Achievement. Finding shows that (1) there was a significant difference in Reading Comprehension Achievement on Descriptive Text between the students who had High Reading Motivation and Low Reading Motivation taught by using Guided Reading Strategy and Conventional Technique. It could be seen the sig (2-tailed) 0.000 was lower than the significant level of 0.05. (2) There were interaction effects of Guided Reading Strategy and students’ Reading Motivation towards students’ Reading Comprehension Achievement. It could be seen from sig (2-tailed) 0.000 was lower than the significant level 0.05, and (3) Guided Reading Strategy can be utilized to promote the reading skill of the students and it contributes to the students’ Reading Comprehension Achievement improvement.

Abstract

This research is aimed to identifythe intrinsic and the extrinsic elements and social values found in Pride and Prejudice novel by Jane Austen. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. In data collection, the researcher employed triangulation that presented three different techniques, namely documentation, observation, and interview. The results showed that, first, the story is a romantic story where Elizabeth Bennet and Mr.Darcy as the main characters. The setting of the story was inthe 19th century in Britain. Conflict; Mr.Darcy has much prejudice to Elizabeth and her family and makes some misunderstandings between them. Second, it was found that there are seven kinds of social values in Pride and Prejudice novel by Jane Austen. The social values found in the novel were honesty, human dignity,human rights,social equality,social class,religion, and responsibility.
