Abstract

AbstractThe title of this study was teaching reading recount texts through evidence-based strategy to the eighth grade students of State Junior high School 7 of Palembang. The problem of this study was the students have difficulties to identify the meaning of the word, main idea of the texts, and detail information even they enjoyed in reading learning. It makes the students hard to understand the text, especially in reading recount texts. The objective of this study was to find out whether or not there are any significantly difference by the students who are teach recount text through evidence-based strategy and those who are not. The true-experimental method with randomized pre-test and pot-test control group design was used in this study. The data was analyzed through matched t-test and independent t-test. The population of this study was all the eighth grade students of State Junior High School 7 of Palembang Academic Year 2018/2019 with the total number of population was 328 students from 11 classes. The simple cluster sampling used in this study. The samples are VIII.1 as the experimental group with 31 students and VIII.5 as the control group with 28 students. The average score of post-test in experimental group was 85,56 and the average score in the post-test in control group was 79,73. based on the findings in this study, the researcher was concluded that there was significant difference of students’ score between the students who were taught through evidence-based strategy and those who were taught without evidence-based strategy in reading recount texts at State Junior High School 7 of Palembang. It could be seen from the value of t-obtained was higher than the value of t-table (2,78>1,697). It means that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. Form the data analysis above, it could be conclude that there was significant difference in reading recount texts of the eighth grade students of State Junior High School 7 of Palembang who were taught through evidence-based strategy and those who were not.Keyword: Reading, Recount Texts, and Evidence-based strategy

Abstract

AbstractThis study was conducted to find whether or not there is a significant difference in reading comprehension achievement of students before and after being taught by using task journals. The writers used the weak experimental method with the one pre-test and post-test design. The sample for this study was the fourth semester students of English Department, State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya Palembang in theacademic year of 2012-2013. In collecting the data, the writers gave the students reading comprehension test.In this study the writers used matched t-test to analyze the data. In general the result of the study shows that teaching Reading subject using task journals is better and more appropriate for the students of English Department at the State polytechnics of Sriwijaya Palembang. It is found that there is a significant difference in reading ability of the students who were taught using task journals. It is seen from the comparison of the results of the pretest and the posttest. The observed t value which was taught using task journals was greater that the table t value at 0.05 level of significance. So the alternative hypothesis that there is a significant difference in students’ reading abilities which were taught using taskjournals was accepted.Keywords: Task journal, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract : Directed Listening –Thinking Activity (DLTA) is used in the building knowledge phase of a lesson, the part of a lesson in which students are inquiring to make meaning. In this activity, students listen to a story that is told or read to them and make predictions about what will come next. They are asked to confirm their prediction from time to time with information from the text, and to make new predictions. DLTA teaches students to listen or read actively, develop skill incomprehension of narratives, and use their awareness of genre and their understanding of plot structures to guide predictions. Based on the background above, the writer is interested to do a research entitled “Teaching Listening Through DLTA (Directed Listening Thinking Activity) to the tenth grade students of PGRI Senior High School 6 of Palembang”. The formulation of the problem of this study as follows :”Is it effective to teach listening through DLTA (Directed Listening Thinking Activity) to the Tenth Grade Students Of PGRI Senior High School 6 of Palembang?”. Based on the finding, it is found that the students’ average score in the pre-test was 5.39 and in the post test was 6.6. The significant level 5% (0.05) and degree of freedom (df) was 39 (40-1=39), the critical value of t-table for one tail test was 1.684 and the result of the obtained was 6.05, the result t-obtained of 6.05 exceed 1.684. It means that Ho (null hypothesis) was rejected and Ha (alternative hypothesis) was accepted. It indicates that teaching listening through DLTA (Directed Listening Thinking Activity) to the TenthGrade Students of PGRI Senior High School 6 of Palembang was effective. Keyword : Teaching, Listening Comprehension, DLTA (Directed Listening Thinking Activity)

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe main problem of this research “What are the teaching performance of the teacher/lecturer of English based on students’ perception related to the questionnaire given?”. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to find out the students’ perception about the teacher of English in teaching performance at Institute of Health Science Siti Khadijah Palembang related to the questionnaire given.  The population of this research was the first semester students of Institute of health Science Siti Khadijah Palembang . They were 40 students taken as sample. A descriptive method was used in this research. the data were obtained by means of questionnaire. Based on the result of the data analysis, the students’ perception toward their teacher’s performance in teaching covered seven aspect were as follows: (a) Preparation of Teaching, (b)Subject matter, (c)Submission of Teaching Materials, (d) Lecturer Competence, (e) Class Management and Academic Atmosphere, (f) Evaluation of Lesson and (g) Subject Matter Relevance.it concluded that most of the students’ perception about the teacher of English in teaching performance at Institute of Health Science Siti Khadijah Palembang give  good perception.Key words : Students’ Perception, The Teacher/lecturer of English, Teaching Performance

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this research is to find out was any significant influence in learning reading narrative text between the tenth grade students of Madyatama Vocational High School of Palembang who are taught through Beach Ball strategy and those who are not. This research used quasi experimental method. Two groups were as the sample; experimental and control groups. Data was collected through written tests; pretest and posttest. It was analyzed them using independent sample test. The result showed t-obtained was 5.800. It was higher than t-table (2.004) at the significance level p<0.05 in two tailed testing with df=54. It means that there was a significant influence between the tenth grade students of state Senior High School 4 of Palembang in learning reading narrative text who are taught through Beach Ball strategy and those who are not.Keywords: Beach Ball Strategy, Reading, Narrative Texts

Abstract

AbstractThis study was conducted to find out (1) whether or not it is effective empowering students’ listening comprehension through Internet Content-Based Activities. The samples of this study were the first  semester students of English Department State Polytehcnic of Sriwijaya Palembang in the academic year of 2013-3014. The primary data were collected by means of test. The results show that  there was a statistically significant difference in listening comprehension achievement of the students pretest-posttest after being taught through Internet Content-Based Activities. It was found out that the average score of the students’ pre- test was 65.33 while in the post test was 74.19. the result of t-test calculation shows  that the value of t was 6.472. Where the value of the t-table 2.086  at the significance level of 0,05% with df 20. Thus, t-obtained was higher than t-table. It can be concluded that Internet Content-Based Activities was effective empowering the first semester, English department  students’ listening comprehension at State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya Palembang. Key Words : Internet Content-Based Activities, Listening Comprehension

Abstract

AbstractThis was concerned with the inquiry on the correlation among reading interest, reading habit, reading motivation and reading comprehension achievement of the Eleventh Grade Sudents of State High School 7 of Prabumulih. The problem of this study was to find out whether or not there are significant correlations among reading interest, reading habit, reading motivation and reading comprehension of the Eleventh Grade Sudents of State High School 7 of Prabumulih. Data collection is deliberated by using questionnaire. validity test, normality test, homogeneity test, linearity test, Data analyse used r- product moment and multiple regression. Findingshowed that there was significant correlation among reading interest, reading habit, reading motivation and reading comprehension achievement of theEleventh Grade Sudents of State High School 7 of Prabumulih. Conclusion suggests that there are significant correlation among reading interest, reading habit, reading motivation and reading comprehension achievement of the Eleventh Grade Sudents of State High School 7 of Prabumulih.Keywords: Reading Interest, Reading Habit, Reading Motivation, and Reading Comprehension Achievement

Abstract

This research study was carried out based on the problem faced by the writer as the teacher of English at SMAN 19 Palembang. The result of the preliminary study at the eleventh grade of SMAN 19 Palembang showed that the students’ reading comprehension achievement did not meet the standard criteria of success. To solve the problem, the writer decided to conduct classroom action research. The research problem of this research were “ How could PQ4R Strategy improve the students’ reading comprehension achievement to the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 19 Palembang?” and “What was the students’ perception of the implementation of PQ4R strategy to improve their reading comprehension achievement? This study was conducted in three cycles by following the procedure of classroom action research: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The findings of the study showed that the PQ4R strategy could increase students’ reading comprehension achievement. It could be inferred that students’ perception was very good.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study were to find out (1) whether there was significant difference in reading comprehension achievement of narrative text between the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 6 OKU who were taught by using story grammar strategy and that of those who were not, (2) whether there was significant difference in reading habit between the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 6 OKU who were taught by using story grammar strategy and that of those who were not. The population of the study consisted of four classes of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 6 OKU with the total was 123 which divided equally in experimental and control groups by using cluster random sampling to get the two classes as the sample. At the end of the study the writer found out that there was significant difference in students` reading comprehension achievement of narrative text and their reading habit between the students who were taught by using story grammar strategy and that of those who were not. It was identified that sig. (2-tailed) or p value (0.00) was less than alpha value (0.05) and the independent sample test shows the comparison of reading habit posttest of both experimental group and control group displayed the difference between scores. Abstract

The aim of this paper were to share “Creating Video and Speaking Achievement in EFL Classroom”, to find out factors causing low ability in speaking class, to identify the effectiveness of videos in proficiency, to describe the effectiveness of videos in increasing students’ motivation in the speaking class, and to create a video project in speaking class. The research used qualitative method. The data of the research were collected using: interview, observation, and documentation. The data collected were classified into two major data; reflective notes and document analysis. The results showed that video project was the effective technique to improve students’ speaking achievement. Students showed enthusiasm in joining class. The video entertained and motivated them to get involved in creating a video project.Key words: Creating Video,Speaking Achievement
