Abstract

Indonesia has many medicinal plant species that are distributed in many regions. Green grass jelly (Cyclea barbata (L.) Miers.)is one of medicinal plant that used in traditional medicine by Indonesian people. This species used to treat inflammation, fever and others. The main content of green grass jelly are saponins, flavonoids and alkaloids. Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi can infect the human body, but the green grass jelly can inhibit the growth of these bacteria. This study was performed using four methods, maceration, fresh leaf grinding, fresh and dried leave boiling, the dilution series (10%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) were applied for each method. The best result among four methods was the maceration method with 100% concentration dilution. The treatment using E. coli showed the widest diameter of inhibition zone was 17.23 mm and the lowest diameter  was 7,70 mm. while the treatment using S. typhi showed the widest diameter was 15.89 mm and the lowest diameter was 6,85 mm. The higher  the concentrations used, the wider the inhibition zone diameter was.

Abstract

The island of Sumatra harbors a few large ungulates, including the endangered Asian tapir, Tapirus indicus, whose population is believed dwindling due to habitat loss and fragmentations. Recent surveys indicated that the species occurs in a wide range of habitats which are strongly affiliated to natural forests. In Riau Province, Rimbang-Baling Wildlife Reserve is one of the remaining pockets of tapir population. We have conducted a preliminary assessment of tapir population in this reserve using camera traps. We operated 20 camera-traps in 20 systematically grids. From 1,710 effective trap nights, 304 images of tapir with 71 independent images were obtained, which were identified as 14 individuals. Based on the best models developed in DENSITY Program Version 4.4, we estimated that there were 7.60 ± 2.40 (D±SE)tapir individuals/100 km2 in the surveyed area. Our study provided the first density estimate of this endangered speciesin Sumatra using Spatial Explicit Capture-Recapture method. The findings indicate that Rimbang Baling is an important area that should be protected more effectively if the Asian tapirs want to be conserved for the long term.

Abstract

Palm oil industries usually produce side result such as empty fruit bunch (EFB) wastes. This waste can be employed as a substrate for making compost. Naturally, EFB takes a long time to produce standardized compost as its contains lignin and cellulose components. The purpose of this research was to analyze the ability of indigenous lignocellulolytic microorganisms isolated from peat soil in Riau as the bioactivator. The selected isolates consisting of 4 bacteria (BB_S27, BB_HP42, BB_HP41 and BB_K20) and 2 fungi (LIJ1 and L1J2) were subcultured on Nutrient Broth and Potato Dextrose Broth. Starters were then prepared from a combination of those isolates resulting three types of starter, namely starter I (4 isolates bacteria), starter II (4 isolates bacteria and 1 isolates fungi), starter III (4 isolates bacteria and 2 isolates fungi). As positive controls, starter IV (EM4) and starter V (bioactivator made in USA) were utilized. Starters were prepared by fermentation process during 7 days using seedling media. Composting was done by the windrow composting system utilizing 500 kg EFB as a substrate and inoculated by 50 liters of the starters at the 1st and 7th incubation time. During 35 days composting process, the substrate was enriched by water every 2 days. The best quality compost was produced by K3 treatment (a combination of 4 bacteria) as its characters almost in line with the National Quality Standard (ISO) such as N 1.57%, C/N ratio 23.89, P 0.38%, K 1.61%, blackish brown color, soil smell, unraveled texture, and the highest cell number of bacteria, fungi, and celullolytic microorganisms were with value 1.38x1012 CFU/g, 2.08x107 CFU/g dan 1.35x108 CFU/g, respectively.

Abstract

The noise level produced by standard and modified motorcycles exhaust has been investigated. In this research, there were three types of motorcycles used namely Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha. Noise levels that generated by those motorcycles were measured using Sound Level Meter (SLM) SL 4112. In order to eliminate noise from other sources 5 different  angles (0o, 45o, 90o, 135o, and 180o) were used, then the measurement of noise from the motorcycles exhaust was done 2m from the exhaust. The results of the measurement showed that sound intensity generated by  standard motorcycle exhaust at angle of 90o produced maximum value of 78,17 dB, 79,62 dB and 97,55 dB for Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha respectively. By modifiying the exhaust, the noise level produced of Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha were 97,48 dB, 97,62 dB and 97,55 dB respectively. The significant increase  of noise level for modified exhaust with muffler was caused by several factors such as muffler and diameter of exhaust. The range value of noise level for the standard exhaust was measured at the angle of 90oand the engine variation of 5000 rpm was 78,66 dB while for the modified exhaust produced an average value of 97,55 dB with the same position and engine variation.

Abstract

Mangrove is flora that grows in coastal area and it has high tolerance on salinity. Mangrove plays an important role in nutrient cycle because it produces nutrient for surrounding ecosystem. Riau province has wide mangrove forest located in Dumai city, Bandar Bakau. The aim of the research was to determine the amount of its litter production. There were three zones in this research, namely Upper Zone, Middle Zone and Lower Zone. A total of 10 litter traps (1x1 m2) were placed in each zone using a purposive sampling method. The litter was analyzed in the Laboratory Ecology of Biology Department. Results showed that highest total litter production for threemonths (1091.02 g/m2/month) was found in the Middle Zone. In March, litter production (619.62 g/m2/month) was higher than the others. The data showed that the litter production had a positive correlation with humidity and rainfall in the three zones. A significant value was found in the Lower Zone between litter production and salinity.

Abstract

Silver nanoparticles have been successfully grown on solid substrate. The growth of the particles used wet chemical  method which consisted of two steps, seeding and growing steps. The silver nanoparticle growth was carried out by two variations which were surfactant’s concentration and ascorbic acid’s volume.  The UV-Vis spectrum profile of the samples described that the  growth of silver nanoparticles of spherical shape was dominated on the ITO, represented as a sharp single peak of the absorption spectra. Its characterization measured by XRD showed that silver nanoparticles had grown on the substrate with crystal orientation (1 1 1) and (2 0 0). The FESEM images depicted that the shape of silver nanoparticles was a spherical shape with their uniform diameter size of 300-650 nm.
