Abstract

A research has been  carried  to determine the  calory  value of the  mixture of  coconut charcoal and palm oil shells  using an  experimental method. This experiment used a bomb callorimeter  to measure the physical parameters  of the sample (callory value, sulfur  total, total ash  and total moisture  of  content). Each sample was  treated  by  the same pressure and volume.  The samples  were  taken from two different materials, namely  charcoal  of  coconut shells  and oil palm shells.  Four different samples  were made from  combination of  grain size  ratio  of 60  :  40 and 40 : 60.  The sample  A and C  were mixture of  coconut shell charcoal  and  charcoal oil palm shells  with  60: 40 ratio, while the sample B and D were mixture of coconut shell Charcoal and charcoal oil palm shells for 40: 60 ratio. Results of the test showed the value of the physical parameters i.e callory value, sulfur  total, total ash and total moisture of content respectively  for the sample A  were  6.379  calories cal/g, 0.18%, 1.43%, and  8.00%,  for  the sample B  were 5.732 calories cal/g, 0.22%,  1.30% and  8,48 %,  for  the sample C were  5.787 cal/g, 0.20%,  10,91%, and 7.19%,  and  for  the  sample  D  were  5.395 calories cal/g, 0.20%, 11.24%, and 7,07%.  The sample  A  had  larger  grain density so that the  grain samples were  more solid.  The denser  of the material was  the higher the value of the heat from the charcoal.  From the overall data  obtained, it was  indicated  that  the sample  A had the highest quality value compared to the other samples.

Abstract

One of the laser beam  unique properties is its coherence. Each  lasers  has  different coherence length. The coherence length of laser is very important in many photonic applications such as holography, spectroscopy,  and interferometry. The coherence length can be measured by an interferometer.  Measurement of coherence length of two HeNe lasers and two diode lasers has been done using a Michelson interferometer. Two HeNe lasers with same wavelength but from the different company and two diode lasers with different wavelength and  brands  were used.  The laser used were HeNe laser 632,8 nm  by Griffin  (laser I), HeNe laser 632,8 nm  by Pudak  (laser II), diode laser 638 nm(laser III) and diode laser 405 nm  (laser IV).  Interference fringes from  interferometer were  recorded  by  a  Thorlabs  CCD camera and processed using  ToupView  software  to determine the respective value of the maximum and minimum intensity  of each fringe pattern.  Data of the fringe pattern intensity were used  to calculate the visibility  (V)  and coherence length  (Lc)  of the lasers.  The results showed that Lc and deviation  of laser I was  (1,12±31,8× 10−3) mm,  laser II  was  (0,99±61,6× 10−3) mm,  laser  III  was(0,50±2,9× 10−3) mm and  laser IV was  (0,3  8±4,8× 10−3) mm, respectively .  The results also showed that the coherence lengths of the HeNe lasers were greater than the diode lasers.

Abstract

The research on the use of mulch of Imperata cylindrica, Mucuna bracteata, and palm midrib compost on the germination and growth of Mikania micrantha had been conducted at the Laboratory of Biology and Botany Gardens, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Riau from September to November 2013. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mulch thickness of I. cylindrica, M. bracteata and palm midrib compost on the germination and growth of M. micrantha, using randomized block design, with seven treatments (M0, M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, and M6). Each treatment had seven replicates with two different thickness of mulch, i.e. 2,5 and 5 cm. The results showed that mulch of I. cylindrica, M. bracteata and palm midrib compost affected the germination and growth of weeds M. micrantha. Mulching with 2,5 cm thickness could inhibit the germination and growth of weed M. micrantha up to 100 %.

Abstract

A research has  been done  in  analyzing  a coefficient absorption of composite material of oil palm trunk fiber and gypsum using a sonic wave analyzer (SOWAN) and carried out using sound  wave of 150 Hz frequency.  Sample  was formed  as  a  cylinder made from gypsum  with  3:5  ratio  of water and gypsum,  formed  a  pipe with  7,5 cm  outer  diameter and heights  of 2 cm, 3 cm, 4 cm, 5 cm, and 6 cm (sample    thickness). The  pipe with the outer  diameter  of  6 cm  was used  for  making  a  cavity  in  the  samples  and  then the composed of oil palm trunk fiber of ± 1 cm length with the variation percentage of fiber of 12,24%, 24,48%, 36,73%, and 48,97% filled in to each sample. Ao (initial amplitude) and A (final  amplitude)  then  were  measured by  Sonic Wave  Analyzer (SOWAN) with the intensity  of  65 dB, 70 dB, 75 dB, dan 80 dB.  Results  of the measurements  showed that the bigger  percentation  of fiber,  the higher  coefficient of sound  absorption andthicker sample  produced  bigger the coefficient of sound absorption.  The biggest absorption  coefficient  was  0,4957,  due to the  sample with 6  cm thickness when the intensity  was  80 dB and the smallest  absorption  coefficient was  0,3088,  of the  sample with 2 cm thickness  when the intensity  was  65 dB. The maximum  absorptioncoefficients of the sample thickness of 2 cm, 3 cm, 4 cm, and 5 cm were 0,3557, 0,3779,0,4155,  and  0,4863,  respectively.  This  showed that  preparing the sample by method  ofarranging the oil palm stem's fiber inside the sample  was  more effective to  absorb  the sound for low frequencies (150Hz) if viewed from the standard of absorption coefficientof  gypsum  was  0.29  for  frequency  of  150  Hz.  Based on  the  results of  this study  the absorption  coefficients  exceed  the  minimum  limit  0.15  as suggested  ISO 11654 as a silencer.

Abstract

Riau is one of provinces that has high diversity of lais fish. Lais fish is one of income sources for Riau community. Probiotics are "good" bacteria that are uninteutionally consumed alive until they reach an intestinal tract. Probiotics can also produce bacteriocins that have been known usefull against pathogens that are specific to some pathogen strains. The aims of this study were to isolate and characterize the probiotic bacteria found in the digestive tract of lais fish (Kryptopterus spp.). This study was conducted from November 2013 to January 2014 at the Microbiology Laboratory, Biology Departement University of Riau, Pekanbaru. The results of this study obtained 16 isolates of probiotic bacteria with all of the isolates belong to gram-positive bacteria with rod and circular shape. All of the isolates were non-motile, negative catalase, positive oksidase, the metil red test showed negative and positive result and the fisiological test showed that all of isolates were able to grow at the temperature of 25-37oC. All of the characterized isolates were grouped into Lactobacillus genus.

Abstract

Sultan Syarif Hasyim (SSH) Forest Park is one of the conservation areas in Riau Province. A total of 125 Spermatophyta species have been previously identified in thisregion. Those species are potencially used as therapeutic agens, especially Sapindales species. This study aimed to identify the Sapindales species from SSH forest park thathas therapeutic potencies based on their phytochemical test (alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, saponins, and tannins). This study had been carried out fromNovember 2013 to February 2014. The sampling method used in this study was an exploration method. Data was descriptively analyzed. The result showed that total of nine Sapindales species from four families were identified. The number of species that positively contained alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, saponins, and tannins were 7, 3, 6, 2,6 and 4, respectively.

Abstract

Indole Acetic Acid (IAA) is one of group of auxin phytohormones and plays a role to improve plant growth. Beside plants, fungi are also known to be able to produce IAA.This study aimed to select the ability of fungal isolates collection of Microbiology Laboratory, Faculty of Math and Natural Sciences University of Riau in IAA production. Fungal isolates were cultured in medium PDB (Potato Dextrosa Broth)enriched by tryptophan as a precursor of IAA. Indole acetic acid produced by fungi was detected by adding Salkowski reagent and determined quantitatively by the use of colorimetric method. The results showed that 47 fungal isolates were able to produce IAA. The highest IAA production was revealed by isolate RPL4-14 (646,75±0,35 ppm) and the lowest was shown by isolate RPL2-x (4,00±3,53 ppm) when they were culturedin PDB medium enriched by tryptophan. The fungal collection did not only produce IAA in the medium containing tryptophan, but also in the medium without tryptophan as shown by isolate RPL3-10, which has IAA concentration i.e 76,50±0,00 ppm and71,00±0,70 ppm, respectively. Isolates which produced the highest IAA concentration are identified as Penicillium sp.

Abstract

Lirik  oil field  is one of the oil-producing layers  that  is  located in  Indragiri  Hulu  Riau  province, situated at ± 140 km South of the city of Pekanbaru with the area of ± 12 km2.  There is no researchon  Lirik oil fields, at  on the  maturity level of petroleum using  the methylphenantrene  index parameters on oil wells, therefore  this study aimed   to determine  the level of thermal maturity of  Lirik  oil.  Determination of thermal maturity was done by taking  two samples from two different wells of Lirik oil field, Riau. In this study the thermal maturity determination was  done using two parameters,  the  parameters of isoprenoid and n-alkanes in saturated  fractions and  characterized using gas chromatography (GC-FID), this parameter was  the  initial  parameter  in the determination of thermal maturity. Determination of the level of thermal maturity of petroleum  enhanced with  Metilphenantrene  index parameter on aromat fractions were characterized using gas chromatography -mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). Determination of thermal maturity level using the parameter index was determined by looking at the value Metilphenantren MPI-3 and MPR (Methylphenantrene ratio). The results of the determination of thermal maturity at saturated  fraction using the ratio of n-alkanes and isoprenoid indicated  that oil from  Lirik  oil wells, Riau was  already ripen. This was confirmed by the parameters that have Metilphenantrene  index values  ranged MPI-3 0709; MPR 0755 and 0699 ranges; 0.756. The values  of these parameters Metilphenantren index showed that  crude oil from two wells Lirik, Riau has a low maturity level.

Abstract

Water apple is one of agricultural commodities in Indonesia, including Riau Province. In this Province, this species is mainly distributed in Pekanbaru and Kampar. The diversity of water apple in both regions is high, however, there is no record of its morphological diversity study. This study aimed to identify and to know the diversity of water apple from Pekanbaru and Kampar based on the morphological characters. This research had been carried out from April 2013 to January 2014 using survey and observation methods. The morphological characters were observed and described. The scoring of morphological characters was then analyzed using NTSYS-pc 2.02i. The numbers of variation found in tree, leaf, flower, fruit and seed were 4, 5, 7, 9 and 3 respectively. The similarity coefficient ranged from 0.16 to 0.77. The highest similarity was found on individual R8 and R7, while the lowest similarity coefficient was found on individual KM10 and BR8. Result of cluster analysis showed that the relationship of water apples ranged from 0.41 to 0.78.

Abstract

Ferroelectric materials of  Barium Strontium Titanate  (BST) with its  composition  of Ba0,3Sr0,7TiO3  was  succesfully deposited by a solid solution method. The samples were prepared in the form of pellets  and then  were annealed  at  the temperature of 600, 700, 800oC.   Characteritation of the samples was performed  using X-Ray diffraction (XRD). The results of characteritation using XRD was described on a graph  of the intensity  vs. 2 theta. The XRD  patterns of  Ba0,3Sr0,7TiO3  have  peaks. It was confirmed that the material of Ba0,3Sr0,7TiO3 has cubic crystalline structure, and its lattice parameter was  in average of 3,961 Å. The particle sizes (D) and lattice strains (η) of the material that was annealed at temperature of 600, 700, 800°C for 1 hour were 42.60, 44.43, 46.89 nm and -4,49x 10-3, -4,05 x 10-3,  -2,96 x 10-3, respectively. The increase in annealed temperature will raise the particle size and lattice strain.
